The reverse lever is also the 'neutral finder'. You engage first gear, move to backwards and return it to the forward posituion. This puts the bike into neutral. You can only engage reverse from neutral and you do this by pushing the lever towards the rear and leaving it there until you have manoeuvred out of your awkward parking spot. Use idle or very small throttle openings to reverse. Do NOT rev the engine and slip the clutch to control, just low power as you slip the clutch. Then you move the lever back forwards to its normal riding position. The clutch is a twin-plate dry clutch and suffers very quick overheating if you slip it like a normal bike clutch. You should use it for every gear change and never attempt clutches changes or you'll strip the gearbox engagement mechanisms. The engine is VERY tractable once warmed enough not to need the choke anymore and can pull away from just above idle without any effort at all, thus very little clutch slipping is required. A well kept clutch can last an extremely long time, with early examples still on the same clutch plates! With the very low centre of gravity and on this example with disc brakes fitted and uprated suspension, the Ural can be hustled along with some serious pace. You can expect up to 90mph on a well tuned example that has got a few miles on board to run it in properly. Although by comparison to a modern 750, these are very slow, getting from A to B is little different time wise, because you can maintain your speed more easily without constant braking and acceleration between cars blocking your path. I've found that moving the seat back one bolthole and fitting the rear mounting to a cross-brace you can bolt on, gives a much more comfortable riding position for our longer western legs. I also found that for my 5' 10" I set the bars as low as I could without fouling the tank at full lock. For me, this took a lot of strain off my wrists, but this is obviously a very personal thing. The triangular knob on the headstock is a friction damper, but quite honestly on the Solo you only need it turned in enough to stop it rattling around. It's really meant for the sidecar outfits where it has a definite need for modest application.

The reverse gear should be blanked off on a solo machine as it's totally superfluous. These machines are also overpriced, I remember in the 1970's you couldn't give these Soviet motorcycles away, they were a cult machine for eccentrics that enjoyed reliving WWII on these death traps. The brakes were almost non existent and the tyres felt like they were teflon coated, they lasted for donkeys years, you simply couldn't wear the tyres out. The bearings were really badly manufactured and would fail at very low mileage.
