Decoding Couples: Unfiltered Relationship Advice

If you’ve ever wondered ‘can a separation help save a marriage?’ today’s marriage advice podcast is one you don't want to miss. Rachel's husband Gianni joins the Decoding Couples Podcast for a marriage story unlike you've ever heard before. They unpack how the pandemic, chronic miscommunication, depression, alcohol and trauma derailed their family and almost brought them to divorce. They pull the curtain back on the most painful parts of their marriage and how it ultimately transformed their relationship.
Rachel and Gianni went through a separation period in early 2020, but their marriage emerged stronger than ever. Rachel shared their story on Instagram, and people became curious about the details of their separation. In this episode, they discuss their journey, the challenges they faced, and how they navigated their separation during the global pandemic. Both Rachel and Gianni admit to feeling nervous about sharing such a vulnerable time publicly, but they believe it's important to have open conversations about these topics.
They acknowledge that their relationship had its ups and downs before the separation, and they reflect on the difficulties they experienced. Gianni, in particular, struggled with expressing his emotions due to cultural expectations and a fear of appearing weak. Rachel felt lonely and misunderstood before the separation, and their lack of intimacy became a clear sign that something was wrong. Despite the challenges, they worked through their issues and are now in a better place.

• does separation work to save a marriage?
• how can I save my marriage during separation?
Marriage separation can have several potential benefits for couples facing difficulties in their relationship. Firstly, it allows individuals to take a step back and gain perspective on the issues at hand, as well as evaluate their own needs and desires. It provides an opportunity for personal growth and self-reflection, enabling each partner to focus on their individual well-being.
Additionally, separation can foster open communication and a chance to address underlying problems without the immediate pressure of living together. In some cases, a trial separation can indeed save a marriage by offering a temporary break from the conflicts and tensions that may have accumulated, allowing both partners to reevaluate their commitment and work on the necessary changes to rebuild trust and intimacy. However, it's important to note that separation does not guarantee success, as the outcome largely depends on the willingness and effort of both individuals to actively engage in therapy or counseling, address the root causes of the issues, and make necessary changes to improve the relationship.

I wish my husband showed an ounce of emotion. We’re still separated (same house, no kids) and I’m on the fence of divorce because of his lack of emotions. During marriage counselling, the counsellor has to prompt him to pass me tissues when I was bawling. I need to be told I love you, I need affection like kisses, hugs and holding hands, but I have to prompt him for all of that. It feels like a better life when I’m single. I also had to beg him to go individual counselling, and my mum was the one who convinced him.

Way to go Gianni! Thanks for coming on the show. From what I heard, it sounds like the separation doesn't really save the marriage. To me, the separation helped Rachel clearly express how discontent she was which opened conversation for repair. They did the necessary work (through therapy) to take responsibility, empathize, and learn to repair. Then coming together (in COVID) facilitated the conversation for recovery. (Please let me know if I'm misreading this.) COVID helped our marriage too. Saving 5-10 hours a week of commuting time and being very accessible working from home, greatly enhanced our communication - especially during times when she was burnt out and not feeling seen.
