Mystery about Marriage
Marriage is a Means!
God created marriage to teach us (His image bearers), what it means to be in a relationship and how to maintain it. Marriage was instituted out of who God is. He is a relational God existing in the Trinity as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
God created marriage so that Adam, His image bearer, would experience what it means to be in a relationship with another image bearer like him. Hence, marriage has become God’s ways of creating a relationship, togetherness, community, connection, and belongingness for mankind.
Because we are relational beings, marriage provides an avenue to express our relational nature. If you cannot relate well with your spouse (God’s image bearer); it will be difficult to relate with God.
Because we are created in the image of God and being relational beings, marriage becomes the means whereby we display some of the communicable or shared attributes of God that are inherent in us with one another. Our marital relationships help us to show and share with others all the attributes of God that are in us. Such as love, faithfulness, forgiveness, etc. Marriage is a means for transformation and not just satisfaction. Marriage is to help couples become like God through their living together in God. It is considered as a divine laboratory or means for shaping, forming, and transforming the redeemed people of God until they are conformed to the likeness of Christ.
Marriage is designed by God as a means of transforming us into the image He wants us to be. Marriage is a means to an end. Man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever. Marriage is one of the ways or means through which we glorify God and enjoy Him. Marriage is not a means to man’s satisfaction alone but rather a means to God’s glorification.
Every marriage is to reveal the glory of God. It is not for the display of our glory. Marriage is not a myth; it is a mystery. It can not be based on calculation or projection. Marriage is a mystery that can only be known through revelation. Therefore, one needs to understand the mind of God for marriage before entering it. For marriage to be a blessing and not a curse, we must rely upon the mind and purpose of God for marriage.
