They actually do a good job of hinting at what happened without doing an all to common exposition dump. If you watch the movie you can kinda figure it out on your own by the tone of the conversations. It's good writing in my opinion

I was expecting the end of the tunnel to just be on earth and the entire thing was some experimemt or something, with the forcefields doubling as a screen. Would have been more entertaining

Is it just entertainment for you and once over you never think of it again. 2. Do you want your time well spent with your entertainment. This movie had none of those. everyone but the kid died and she walked into the nothing....

You can select those humans to be minimally related, and carefully control who you pair together over many generations (no love childs!). My numbers come from animal breeding either domesticated animals or threatened species.Long story short, you're probably right. Either they have to come from some other part within the habitable area, which means there is at least one other place with food and water, or they came from the outside, where the same applies. Also when she walks out the atmosphere is thick enough for her to be totally fine. And that there is a tunnel means going in and out was planned when the whole project was built

Not even 10 people total is not enough genetic diversity. Mutation and complications would put a stop to that in at most a few generations. Would still be better than "we need to repopulate, so let's go in with violence in mind and likely get people killed, ruining the chance for repopulation entirely!" though. I don't get that part. Like...she sees there's nothing outside. The only thing out there for her would be death by dehydration, starvation, or something similar. The only available food and water are inside. Yet she steps out anyway. On that note, some other problems: -Why did the door automatically close behind her with no way back in? Seems like a badly designed system. -How can she even stay alive outside with just an oxygen mask? Living on mars isn't just about oxygen. It's also about temperature (it's far colder on mars), radiation (less atmosphere means far more radiation), and air pressure. (once again, far less atmosphere, so far less pressure to keep her body in it's normal form) -On that note, was there no airlock or anything? A tunnel like that would experience explosive decompression going from earth to mars atmosphere. -If it's so barren out there, where did those other people even come from? How did they survive for probably years? -A dome project like that would cost tens of billions at the least. Are they expecting us to believe no one from earth kept an eye on what was going on? No communication? No contingency plans? Nothing? Just "put stuff and people on mars, and they're on their own after that"? -And lastly; Why was the only way to "see the outside", a single tunnel physically leading there? No windows, no cameras, nothing else...?

They can't repopulation with only 2 people. That means the woman or man would have to have sex with their own child to have another child.

That's why the movie, and judging from what the recap tells us, is stupid. They are supposed to be the last humans alive. I'm supposing a global catastyrophy happened on Earth in their timeline and while they were on Mars on experiment they actually have to start over. From there the movie doesn't make a bit of sense. Instead of cooperation and working together to make humanity happen again, living at the same place, with whatever limitations till another base is constructed or more buildings are made in the one we see, heck they could also use that Martian tunnel as well possibly. Then they could form a primitive council in order to plan for their future. The children could be made to be friends, maybe they'd have to consider the polyamorous option, etc. Instead they try to kill eachother in what could be a mutual extinction for all of them, the survivors try to kill each other and instead of talking their option, the final too get into rape scenarios. In the end they eradicate humanity in their timeline and dimension(it can't possibly be hours cause we're not THAT stupid, yet) just cause the girl thought she was beeing lied to and could discover, what when she reached the end of that tunnel? Riches? Martians? Other people? Something to advance herself? Who knows, it is never told. Funny thing is it had so much material it could expand on. But in the end, a big, fat nothing. Like the director and the screenwriter.

I hope that she can open the doors and return to Steve and communicate with people on Earth.
