This is part one of a two part video series I made from a visit to the Marshall Amplification factory in Milton Keynes UK. Phil Wells showed us around the factory and we were shown many models being produced including the 1962, the JVM210 and 410 , hand wired Plexi and the YJM100 which had just been released.
This video will probably show you the Marshall factory like you have never seen it before, and at the end of video two we show you some of the very rare amps at Marshall HQ including one of the very first Marshall aluminum Plexi heads and of course the Marshall No 1 chassis.
Check out this video - we show you manufacturing from chassis right through to testing, failed product and what goes on to fix those products - as well as amps in the repair shop from customers, shipping (see some amps destined for your country) and we answer why other countries can sometimes be slow to receive their allocation of Marshall amps.
This is a thoroughly enlightening video and Phil shows you exactly what goes on at Marshall... all in a great way.
There are some tips in these two videos too... so check them out but remember to get the best out of these two you have to watch them right through to the end of each one.
Don't forget to hop over to www.tonymckenzie.com to see all the reviews and other stuff for guitarists. The place for no bull reviews... see you there soon. Tell them Tony sent you...
Please subscribe, thumbs up and ring the bell for notifications.

bless him Phil Wells, a lovely guy. He used to modify my 78 2203 Master Volumes. the only mod they do actually, which is a power amp input to the phase splitter 12AX7(or for British folk ECC83) then direct into the EL34s.. always taken the tour whenever I've been up there, never had a bad word to say about this company, brilliant and helpful and treat you the same as any other person, be they rock star, or jobbing musician.

Phil is one of the nicest guys I have met in the music business. I have not seen him in a while but he's been at Marshall a very long time... and you are right they really look after visitors - many companies just don't bother but Phil and his team remain at the top of the list. Thanks for that info too and for watching.

It was a really great visit (there are two parts too) and Phil Wells was so helpful and knowledgeable - he was there for well over 40 years I believe... I'm told Phil has retired now but if he ever reads this - Phil you were quite incredible and a complete asset to Marshall no doubt!. Thanks for watching.

Tony McKenzie- thank you for posting this! As a US citizen, I probably would never have been able to see this first-hand. I've always loved Marshalls (right now I have a TSL 100 head with a 1960AV cabinet) and it's cool seeing how these things are made. Again, thank you :)

I am proud to own a Marshall MA50C. It is the loudest and best sounding amp I have ever used, let alone owned. It is not merely a piece of my bands equipment, but it is a fourth band member. A member who is not going to get fired for many years to come. RIP Jim Marshall, and thank you for my amp.

I just love looking at Phil showing off the circuit boards; the turret board and the PCB. It's really amazing how far we've come in 50 years of manafacture. The stigma attached to PCBs was that the tracks couldn't handle the extremes of touring and would hair crack and fail as they couldn't flex, thus why turret boards and eyelet boards were used as they were far more robust and could flex. These days companies are using thicker boards and tracks to combat this. I'm still a fan of handwired.

I was at the Marshall factory last year and this is the guy I spoke to for a long time . . really nice fellow and very helpful. He actually told me that the Govt got involved with how far Marshall was allowed to space their output trannys . . and that they had to make them a bit further apart which affected the sound even though Marshall had two fuses to protect from flashing. And that Marshall has made other changes to keep the sound as original (such as on their re-issue amps).

Just check when I went around there :) I believe that Phil Wells has retired now from conversations with someone at Marshall, but my guess is he will never retire :) He was a really great host. I did this factory tour on a different occasion from an invite by a band that won it and other things but that time Phil was not there and the tour was of little comparison. Check Part two also! And thanks for watching.

for an answer to anyone asking about esd protection, the floor has a coating on it, (and re done at intervals) not sure what exactly but it works with the shoes the people wear, esd saftey shoes, some have a long material tag that is tucked into a sock eliminating potential shocks, saves changing a wrist band at different work stations and when moving about.. there are testers to stand on before entering the zone..

This is what I like to see. A Standard that is unwavering. So much of what is manufactured today is synthetic. What I mean by that is the 'Soul' is lost and with it the 'Quality'. Marshall appears to cares about it's end product and remains 'true' to itself. I will pay for quality. I was undecided on an Amplifier brand prior to this video. IThe Marshall sound is what I'm looking for and is what I will purchase. Continued success to Marshall and Thanks for maintaining the 'Standard' I want.

@@tonymckenziecom 5150 Stealth III, I have been curious as to the big difference between this and the PRS MT15 as I kind of see them both targeting the same kind of audience / sounds. Maybe one is more rock than metal 🤔
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 3 жыл бұрын
The MT15 is a pretty good amp really. I sold mine recently because I bought the 5150 III Stealth and too many amps by far - I can't get in the place. I think for the money the MT15 is a bargain and the 5150 III Stealth is expensive at least here in the UK. But they are probably different enough to matter. Personally I had never had a 5150 III so I bought it and that will be along soon. It should be interesting on that amp to see exactly what it's like - I can't wait! :) Stay safe.

I told Phil that a re-issue Plexi 100 watt that I owned didn't get the sound of the originals. That is when he brought up the difficulty with the transformer coil spacing that affected the tone. He said that Marshall has worked on their amps to get them to sound the same. . even with the further spacing of the output tranny coils.

Hey thanks Jyme... none of the videos I make are a five minute quickie.. some want that, but that's what everyone else does really so I have always wanted to be different. This was a very lengthy video on two parts and as such does show things that many guys will never see any other way. Not sure why Stan (below) commented that way, maybe he's a pro video guy, or some other reason but that's OK I guess. This is a real view of the Marshall factory and Phil allowed me to film everywhere really - and that is one of the reasons why Marshall and that tour IS one of the best in the world. Thanks for your support ;-)

Tony, your one of the good guys making vids, thanks for doing it, I'd be posting vids too but a lack of funds are keeping me from it right now, I'm trying to find an inexpensive vid camera I can afford, I don't work for a living any more, several bad auto accidents ended that so vid camera funds are hard to come by right now. I feel like I'm the only one with out some times. It'll come.
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 10 жыл бұрын
Jyme Bale Hi Jyme, I thoroughly understand that position man... I have certainly been there too. Well, you can do it all on one of those regular cameras even with a memory stick in there. I use MAJIX Movie Edit 2014 Pro version which you can get cheap if you fish around enough, but they make a standard version which for these videos is more than ample. Sorry to hear about the auto accidents too... I saw one today in fact, a guy literally drove off a car lot right in to the side of a bus which took the front end off his car. Yep, he was to busy texting and never even braked! That sort of thing is ridiculous and when I hear about guys getting hurt like you, I often think about the cause and that incident today was really an eye opener. He got out of the disintegrated car as if nothing happened... like 'hey what's going on' type of thing. Guys like you on the other hand suffer. But hey listen, you're still around and that's the thing to be thankful for! Hang on in there and you will find something for sure. Thanks for those kind words too ;-)

+KassperT I sure have owned a few. I'm updating my website and its amazing how many pages I have had to add on Marshall amps! the actual reviews will take some time but the infrastructure will be awesome... I reckon when its complete (maybe a month or so) then Ill have a year of content to put on there. I sure do like Marshall stuff and sometimes I seem to like what some others don't such as the TSL100 which for me has been one of the best recording amps I have ever used... the Mesa and all the others including other Marshall's never came near that sound when you record it for lead guitar. Thanks for watching and if your DSL is the UK made one hang on to it!

In 1974, my local music store called me up and said, "hey, there is a guy trading in 2 4x12 Marshall cabinets for some stereo gear and we are allowing him $300.00 in credit. If you were to come down and offer him a bit more, you could probably get them" so I took $390.00 down and he accepted it and i came home with 2 c.1969 cabinets that were like brand new. Those cabinets changed everything and our Band Mondo Bando were the only band in the Spokane, Seattle Washington area using such heavy weaponry. I ended up using my 2 4x12 cabs and an 8x10 cab, a 50 watt and 100 watt head and my bass player was using 2 full stacks with 100 watt heads. I still have my 2 4x12 cabs and the 50 watt head from those days. I added to my Marshall collection in the 1990's with 3 more stacks, 2 guitar and one bass stack and added 3 more 50 watt heads which were my favorite to use. I wish I had had the JCM 900 50W heads back in the 1970's with the pre-amp features but nothing ever beat the sound of the early cabinets. Marshall memories are the best. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aMh5o6mHqdObn5c.html

@Panic42000

To get a lot of gain you have to crank it. That’s the beauty of the plexi.

I think its wise to get the modern component versions. I understand the desire for vintage style gear (I play guitar as well), but I also know how to build amps like these and what he says is correct. The components made back then were not as stable as the ones made today. I don't know of any component manufacturer (like digikey, newark, ti, farnell, etc) that makes true vintage style. Electrically speaking, the amp will still work and sound the same as vintage models, but with a longer life :)

So, if I understand correctly, you guys are saying that some Euro regulation has stepped in and mandated a change to the config such that the original sound has been compromised? AND now they have to create workarounds to compensate? Nice.. What a load.

@tonymckenziecom A lot more people are willing to tinker with amps these days as well, be it with turret or eyelet boards or even PCB design. Of course PCB design is far easier to tinker with for a novice as they read which resistor or capacitor they need to change as R** or C** and go ahead and unsolder and change out the part. There are minute changes in tone from a PCB to a handwired board. Variations occur and that's what made each amp special. It does still occur but to a lesser extent.

anthony mallia Not that bad an amp and you can get some really cool tones from it!. Check out a 1987x I just bought (I made a video and it will be on line probably in a day or so) I had one before and they give you that sort of AC/DC (and a 1000 other guys) tones. Good to hear you and thanks for watching...

I only wear the hat for KZfaq videos and it promotes my website name - that's the main reason for it :) I like pink :) but I hate to say it but I like the tee shirts - made in Japan and not too easy to pick up. General feedback on the tee's is 'where can I get one :)'. To go on a tour at the Marshall Factory I would call their reception and request a tour - indicate how many guys are going and then arrange a date. That's it and they don't charge you to go... tell them Tony sent you :) and if you have Phil Wells take you around then give him my regards.

Concerning statement at 16:20.......how about going to component supplier..handing them original 1965-9 components and asking them give us these..as accurately as possible ? Which is what we the customer thinks they are getting...and why I paid (retail $9400) over $6K for that JTM100 40th Anniversary Stack. Either way..thanks Marshall.

I really wonder how the workers can stand this loud background music noise all day! How can you do any concentrated work under such conditions? 😱
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 4 күн бұрын
Ha I get it myself. Let me explain. A few years back in our offices we had no background music. When no calls were there it was like a morgue - silent... and it felt depressing. We employed a guy who 'put on the radio' and you know what, since then the office is a much nicer place :) I agree it depends on the channel :) but it DOES change the workplace to something better. Remember those guys could (almost) do that stuff with their eyes closed... some work there for 40+ years or more. Great point though and once you experienced that radio you would not want to go back to silence. Thanks for watching.

I've worked in this industry for years, but I must ask this question: In today's environment, just how many amplifiers can you sell? Musical equipment is dead compared to how it used to be. So, it's got me wondering how Marshall stays in business.
@historiclp4577
@historiclp4577 4 жыл бұрын
James Lenahan ,well someones buying them, they even built a sound proof room, i think millitary grade testing facility.I would think just the professional musicians alone who can afford to buy these amps,use them for a tour then throw them away,would be enough for this factory to pump them out.It sounds crazy but i think some of the big bands use and, toss equipement,we would never dream of doing that too,like a hammer,as Joe bonamassa calls equipment.I just wish i knew where
