My thoughts exactly. Marshall does a lousy job of demo’ing their own amps.

Small correction here: the 2100 and the 4100 are completely different amps. The 2100 is a single channel amp with 2 master volumes and no reverb. The 4100 is the dual channel reverb head shown in this video. The difference is not just the power tubes as stated.

Agreeing i own the JCM900 mark3 2100 and the 2100 is a killer amp , the 4100 is not bad except the op amp , the 2100 has a more JCM800 2204 sound to it, just my Opion!!!

Wow….did NOT see this coming. The great sounding classic hard rock tones were expectedly nice, but that clean was really nice! Just like the clean on the newer Uber-cheap DSL100’s are really nice too. Very warm. Very cool demo. Don’t know much about the 900’s, so this video (and the comment) section was very enlightening. I had no idea these sounded that good. I may pick one up used if the opportunity presents itself.

Early 4100's had gain controls 0-10 on both channels. They also sounded better with EL34 valves. The 2100 was a split channel master volume without reverb. The 4100 was 2 channel dual reverb.

I had a JVM 210. It's a much more modern sounding amp, but if you're a gigging musician, and need lots of tones, it's great. The 900 really just kind of does its one thing.

That's usually how their models work, yes. But only in the 800/900 era. And some models, like the Jubilee, break that rule, because they wanted to have the 25 in all of them.

Have same monster ! I have a master volume on the way to see if I can tame it. What I understand, you don't really get the Marshall tone until you at least get volumes to 7...Thought I would try Master V in the FX loops since it's inexpensive as apposed to an attenuator. If it's a no go..Then a attenuator ! A stadium amp in bedroom needs tamed !

@@1thess523 got myself one the other week. I tried an attenuator (Palmer 16ohm, actually) but I found it took away the gainy guts a little from my amp. So I opted for the JHS black box into the effects loop and it's awesome!! You can crank and get that saturation. Only down side is possibly if you want to connect other effects pedals through the loop. I'm not sure if it can be done simultaneously.🤔

Actually, I think only '96. It was right at the end of the 900 series. They started the JCM2000 series in '97.
@threelions7404
@threelions7404 5 жыл бұрын
They started using 5881 some time during 1993. I own a JCM900 4100 from ‘93 which has the 5881 sticker and the sticker inside the chassis saying “only use 5881 valves”. I’ve also had another 93 900 which had EL34s and different components to suggest EL34 from the factory. Some late model 900s had EL34 again but generally anything past late ‘93 will be 5881. Don’t let them put you off, I’ve had both EL34 and 5881 versions and there’s barely any difference at all. I actually prefer the 5881 versions to the EL34 when loaded with 6L6. Also I believe the DSL series actually began in 98. They were producing 900s still during some of the production of the DSL.

@@threelions7404 Oh ya, cool. Thats some good info! Do yo know how I can tell what year mine would be then? It's got the 5881(Sovtek's) and the (Ei Yugoslave ECC83's)! And another quick question, Is it just me, or do you also notice quite a huge difference between older JCM 900's (4100 DR) and the Re-Issue's?
@threelions7404
@threelions7404 5 жыл бұрын
James Cassidy check out the serial on the rear left of the amp - if it’s stamped, the first letter equates to a year (so would be 1990, 91 or 92). If it’s barcoded they used a format for a while from 93 to about 97 where the first 2 digits are the year. Then they went to the current dating method which is a barcode with M-xxxx, the xxxx denoting year. Edit - also, the reissues seem to be faithful to the original 4100 DRs. I haven’t seen inside one but they sound the same, build quality is pretty much the same. The RI versions use 5881 also.

There really are no bad Marshall valve amplifiers. Some poorly designed ones, yes, but none that don't sound a) LIke a Marshall and b) can't be dialed in to either vintage or modern tones. Just my opinion .. but you could buy anything made since around 1996-2020 and be very happy. Its all just a case of how much you want to spend. If you have 500-1000 to blow, no reason not to get a 1987x or a JTM reissue. If you want to spend 300-500, get yourself a DSL(40,50, 100) or an Origin 20 or 50 head. If you want the best sounding (imho) Marshall head of the modern era, you'll be wanting a 100w JCM 800, but those are fetching serious money now and are hard to find in good condition. For the record I own most of the above and without a doubt the best value for money is the DSL40C(R) followed by the heavily discounted (new) Origin 20's. I got one for £249 NEW. That's ridiculous.. and it sounds fantastic through a Creamback 65 cab. You just can't go wrong. Watch out for the 'bad' years of certain models like the JMP and the DSL etc.

the vintage moderns are heavily overlooked in my opinion & also deserve a place in modern Marshall history, @wozzlepop as far as your Marshall experience goes I’m looking at a JCM 900, a JCM 2000 & a JCM 600 at the moment, any personal experience?

I have the 4500 and I wish it had EL 34's (enter sad face) haha. I got the head for $500 on Guitar Center online and I didn't realize they had different tube Marshalls because even thought a 900 was my dream amp I wasn't a Marshall enthusiast so I had no Idea. I am keeping the amp but i'm trying to find a pedal that would help warm it up a bit . I'm also think of thowing in some JJ 5581's because mine has Mesa 6L6 in it and i've seen some demos and asked some people if 5881's are warmer than 6L6 and they tend to agree that they are. I've seen a 900 moded on this one channel and it's a totally different monster in a good way but i'm sure it would cost a pretty penny just in shipping alone haha.

A lot of guitarists are looking for the mythical "Marshall overdrive and Fender clean in one amp", and a lot of manufacturers have tried to give it to them, with widely variable levels of success. This was not a success in that regard. But it sure does do the Marshall thing.

Dawg this is sick as F*** I wanted to know if me and my dad "Were rich" could buy it from you for $250? Were currently covering all of the miserable bithz interests after they killed metal in 2008.. those depressed people now want to buy things from a world that died with the year.. I want to buy all of the models so that they can sit in my house, and then I can resell them to people for $35,000 a piece.. I was watching this one miserable guy who lives with his mother, and didnt have a girlfriend in his home. and thought maybe these were worth money after zapping his phone with my app, to see that Famous guitarist Jack Owen once owned one, and used it on the Butchered At Birth album, which I read about myself because the guy I watched didn't scream about it outside of his house to the neighborhood watch people.. Anyways long story cut short... my offer is $250, and I'll trade you a solid state Peavey for it, I found out the guy I'm spying on only uses tube amps.
