Over the last few days Marshall Amplification have been kind enough o lend me a couple of their fantastic Studio Series of amps. In this video we look at my favorite of the 2 the Marshall Studio Vintage. This 20 watt plexi has got to be one of my favorite amps I've ever tried. The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

IMO, that amazing warm clean channel you can get is worth the price alone. That circuit was used on a tone of early 80’s hard rock albums, so it can get killer hard rock crunch, as well…..and with a pedal, you can really get into high gain territory. GREAT amp. I wish the Silver Jubilee mini had a warm tone like that….

@@zippy61 yes. The amp compensates for low volume with a bright cap. Turning up the volume means less compensation from the cap and the tubes really start to kick in. Mess around with it. This is a fun amp to play around with. You can find great tones all across the board

The high treble channel is the one that has the bright cap. I keep that volume around 6 (1 o’clock) as that seems to be where the bright cap stops making it ice picky. Adjust the normal channel to taste or to the guitar. My Les Paul love high treble at 6.5 or so and the normal around 4.5 to warm it up.

@@TheStudioRats from the research that I did on the Astoria (when a mint-condition combo found it's way onto my radar a few months ago), it seems that the Astoria range (especially the Customs) were considered nice amps, but far too expensive for most. the other issue that Marshall purists seemed to have with them was the aesthetics...it seems that Marshall fans want EVERY amp they ever release to look like a Plexi or a JCM800 - end of story! fortunately for me, I'm not biased and I love the dark red tolex with the cream GT stripe! :) I was lucky and picked mine up for a great price. cosmetically it was perfect and clean, but it did have a dodgy pre-amp valve. I decided to change every valve in there with Genelex Gold Lions, and I'm very happy with it. Oh, and for 30 watts (also switchable to 5W)...it's LOUD! :)

@@TheStudioRats you should buy a little black amp box by JHS, or a passive volume knob of any kind. It opens up the tonal possibilities massively. You can drive both channels like you would a preamp section, while using the passive knob as a master and get heavy sounds quietly or moderately. I need one of those, but I just love my Katana now. Great video. You guys rock. I had to chuckle a little though being a guy born in 61 who played in the 80s. I would have never thought of a tele as the guitar to use with a cranked Marshall tube amp. 😂🤟 Regards from the midwest USA.

Great sounds Paul. Lovely DGT. Do you think you could do a blues band pub gig with this on 20W i.e. not just home and studio use? No effects loop?
@TheStudioRats

Cheers, yes I think it will be loud enough if your not trying to run it clean. It does have an effects loop.

I have one of these amps, and it would absolutely be loud enough for a pub band...as for clean/dirty, you can leave it jumped between high 2 and low 1 and alternate between the high 1 input, for dirty and the low 2 input for a lovely clean with nothing more than a little volume modulation here and there. also, if you need a lottle extra punch and volume, running it through a 4x12 helps...t's lovely! ☺

Hi Bobby. I’m waiting for the studio JCM and the Studio Jubilee to turn up. I’ll do a comparison vid when they do. The Jubilee was my favourite when I tried them before.

Ive got the combo but wish I got the head and cab, Im running my combo with a 1x12 g12h celestion cab and sounds so much better than the 10 inch alone, idk why they made it with a 10 instead of 12 like the silver jubilee.

Those MK2 JMPs are monster amps, I’ve got a 100 watt master volume one and without an attenuator anything above about 3 is deafening!

I just traded in my DSL for this guy. There's a huge price difference. I'll be honest, the DSL is a really underestimated amp. the gain channel is as good as any (including against the jcm800) but the clean channel? not so much. But I can say that of most marshalls out there. Not this guy! prob one of the best clean tones I'v ever heard

I always enjoyed the clean channel a lot. But the OD channels better. I donlove my DSL401 very much and I plan on sticking a Creamback in there but long term I need a mini Plexi. Can't stomach selling the DSL though, so I'll have to save for the SV20H. Probably run ut through the can until I can afford a seperate one....
