In this video I compare the Marshall SV20H and SV212 to basically all the usual alternatives and discuss pros and cons of each choice. These amps and cabs include: Marshall 1987X, Studio Silver Jubilee, DSL20HR, '71 Super Lead, '73 50W Lead, '71 1960A (Pulsonic) '71 1982A (Pulsonic), '85 1933A, '70 1972B 2x12.
SV20H with different settings:
• How to Tweak a Marshal...
DSL20HR with different settings:
• How to TWEAK your Mars...

my favourite thing about your videos is that you don't look down on new or cheaper stuff just because it's new and/or cheap - you demonstrate how the amps sound, offer some of your opinion but ultimately I feel like most of the time you try to make clear that most of these pieces of gear can work well in a given musical context. There are soooo many snobby dudes that claim only X year vintage plexis are the real deal and only pre-Rola Greenbacks are any good or whatever. Thanks for your super informative videos. I'm getting a SV20H soon probably, and your videos helped me seal the deal.

Fantastically, diverse video, as usual. You manage to cover so many of the possibilities of what these amps can do, with both vintage and modern cabs and speakers. While I don't have access to any vintage equipment, it's great to actually hear how the newer amps compare to those classic sounds that we all love. Thanks, Johan for all your work. Thanks, Johan! Love your videos and comparisons. I’ve had a desire for a plexi for some time, but balked because they aren’t very practical. (Same with a Hiwatt DR103) I’ve been using my ‘77 2204 for our band, which is a great amp, but that plexi itch won’t go away! You’re videos and opinion catalyzed me to buy the SV20H with 2x12 stack. Looking forward to running it through its paces! I rehoused the 2204 chassis in a 20” cab, so I’ll be able to neatly use either head with the vertical cab or a 1933 cab. Thanks for all your great videos! I also really enjoyed the 12 combos one. Cheers!

Thank you Johan! I agree with where I think your going with this comparison. There's a certain magic that comes from the 50 and 100 watt Marshall power amp section in the mix, especially during live performance. I wish the SV had this magic but I don't here it. Keep up the great work!

These go for for 800 pounds in the UK... that's 920 USD. A total no-brainer at that price. Meanwhile in the US they sell for $1,750! That's almost double! Absolutely freakin crazy. It's cheaper to fly out to London and pick one up at Andertons and fly home.

Because the SV20H is so mid heavy, it works just fine with a loud drummer in my opinion. I always keep it dimed, so if you were trying to keep it clean it probably wouldn't work, but for what I use it for its perfect! Especially with a 412. Lately I've been using a Orange 112 with a Celestion 75w Creamback. Love it. Great amp 👌

Another great job. The SV did sound like it would work better for recording. Sounded like a studio album should sound. The Super Lead for that live concert sound. Bit warmer and less cut but much better for the big stages. As for the cabs, the SV212 just needs the years of playing your older cabs have under their belt. I think it would have that certain charm in a few years. As for the Jub and DSL, both good but not as open sounding as the non- master volume amps. I favor the superleads. Cheers.

Great video! For me, the SV20 does everything expected from a Plexi and without having an original Plexi available for comparison it will be mistaken for a vintage amp. The speakers are probably more important than the amp if one wants to go for a different sound with either of the shown/played amps. I like the Celestion Heritage speakers a lot with a Plexi.

As a side note, I can tell you that Tommy Folkesson and I discussed the SV-20 a while ago. We both think it’s a good amp. But it doesn’t have the oomph of the 100W Super Lead. But it is a good amp in its own right. The 100W poweramp has so much more muscles and attack and makes the sound bigger. It even sounds bigger compared with its little brother, the 50W.

FOR MY PROJECT I WOULD RECORD WITH MY ORIGINAL '74MARSHALL LEAD & BASS JMP50 MODEL NO.1964 AND MY '93MARSHALL SLP1959 MIXED TOGETHER IN VARIOUS COMBINATIONS WITH VARIOUS SPEAKERS AND CABS(1X15, 2X12, 4X12, ETC) OR, WITH ONLY THE 74 AND A 1X15 CAB IF IT WAS N'T POSSIBLE TO BRING ANYTHING ELSE. FOR OTHER "BAND" PROJECTS I WOULD NOT USE BOTH, FOR CONVENIENCE REASONS ONLY. EITHER ONE WOULD BE OK. BUT IN MIKED LIVE OR STUDIO SITUATIONS ON OTHER PROJECTS, THEN THE STUDIO VINTAGE WOULD BE PERFECT FOR ANYTHING AS LONG AS THE SPEAKERS WERE TO MY LIKING. TONEWISE THE ORIGINAL HEADS ARE WAY ABOVE ANYTHING. IT WOULD BE A LIE TO SAY I COULD LIVE WITHOUT ONE. BUT FOR WORKING MUSICIANS IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THE SLP AND THE SV20 PLEXIS ARE ALRIGHT. CONCLUSION: THE SPEAKERS ARE THE KEY TO MAKE THE NEWER MARSHALL HEADS FIT TO MY (SPOILED BY OLD HEAD SOUND) EARS.

The SV20 sounds like someone needs to go through and tweak the various capacitors. It had less high-end and less lows, and sometimes had an obnoxious honk. It would be interesting to go through the schematics vs a plexi to try to find out what changes are leading to the differences in tone.

I have yet to see you utilize the clipping feature on the mini jubilee, clean channel with clipping engaged is another classic Marshall tone not to be ignored! I have both the 2525h and SV20 with a 2061 cab, probably a better 2x12 option than the current 2x12’s

That’s the “Pull rhythm clip”? I’ve used that one on a couple of videos. I think it tightens up the sound

Just got the Marshall Mini Silver Jubilee 20W ...It has channel switching but the Studio Vintage 20W does not. Also got the Marshall JCM-1H 1 Watt 50th Anniversary Amp....tiny and super cute.

I wonder how it would sound with a set of original Mullard’s. What country was the SV20 made? Just curious…Cheers Johan!

Suddenly now for the first time I like how the Jubilee sounds. So I guess I now need to buy that as well, on top of the 6 Marshalls I already have?

Is it like wine? the vintage amps, because of their long time use sound wiser amd fuller? My Fender Twin RI sounds warmer and fuller after 2 years…thank you so much for the wisdom!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👋🏼🧿

Thanks! When the speakers are broken in after 60 hours it’s actually all downhill I’m afraid. The man leer stuff is built of older usually more imperfect raw material which contributes to a more organic irregular tone

Great video. I tried a SV20 in a store a week ago, yes it sounds good but even with a humbucker guitar it was super noisy, is this normal? I then tried a SC20 and that was much more manageable noise wise, I thought sounded better than the SV. I haven't had a opportunity to try the 2525 yet, I think from your reviews this is the choice for me but I am hoping to check it's noise level first because if it's like the SV noise wise, I'll pass and stick to my JVM and DSL40 for Marshall sounds. Regards.

Thanks, glad to hear it! My SV20 isn’t noisy at all so maybe there some other problem in the signal chain?

With : 1st Speaker 8 Ohms 2nd Speaker 16 Ohms Thank you very much in advance for the information (if it is possible for you to give me your opinion) and sorry for being so bold with the query, I hope I don't bother you. Thank you very much!!Greetings!
