According to Martha herself, she learned Gaspard de la Nuit in one week, because she hadn't been told it is difficult...

this is so cool and the camerawork/editing style is really interesting, I don’t think I’ve ever seen classical music presented in such a loose, energetic way. thanks for the treasure trove of uploads!
The camera work is like a little kid videotaping his dad snoring. Also, she makes a little slip around 4:13 and you can see her react, which I feel is really cool. But of course, amazing piano playing.

I love watching Martha play anything because she is a different breed. But nobody knows about this Canadian pianist Naida Cole. She has the best interpretation of this whole work in my opinion.

Did she do that repeated note in the beginning with one finger? If so, she's crazy (in a good way)

It's interesting to hear how many things don't go quite right here. One of the pieces one has to practice all the time to have any great accuracy. Reminds me of the Prok 3 in Paris where she say something like, "It's not going well. I don't know why."
@MaxLima13 жыл бұрын
She recorded it after playing Rachmaninov's 3rd piano concerto in Paris with Rostropovich. She was exhausted!

@@MaxLima1 Thanks! That explains it. Programming Gaspard and Rach 3 with Argerich's level of nuance and detail that close together is asking the impossible...more or less.
@MaxLima13 жыл бұрын
@@MikeN275 Hahahaha agreed. This was for a tv program, she had to play the 3 movements of Gaspard, but she was so tired that she ended up not playing 'ondine' and 'le gibet' in full.

@@MaxLima1 I see. I had read that story in the comments on some other video years ago, but it was in an abridged form suggesting that the session was entirely fruitless. I always figured this was from a different outing. Fascinating! I understand now. Do you know if she stopped playing solo not long after this? I could imagine this being a part of brewing of the decision or even one of the back breaking straws.
@MaxLima13 жыл бұрын
@@MikeN275 I am not sure about the year when she quit solo performances, since not everything was documented. I believe it happened in 1986

@@armanthoresen9560 The fingerings suggested on the score is 1-2, but I think Martha prefers to do it her way, since it says " _très fondu, en trémolo_ " and the sound of the tremolo produced using her method "melts".
