I don't think so. We get multiple messages and questions each week from drummers that wasted years trying to master double bass drumming by practicing slow (many of them gave up out of frustration at some point). Practicing at 100 bpm will make you a master at playing at 100 bpm. But this won't get you to 200!

Great video man! I'm 15 and I love playing METAL. With much double bass. I use the Pearl RedLine Eliminator belt pedal. Changing the cam into the yellow one helped me a lot! I cranked the spring almost full up since I got the endurance to play consistent 140bpm. But all the rest is practice practice practice. Ok it's sometimes really boring but without all adjustments are useless. I personally practice like The Rev said, I sit down and play for like 1 or 1 and a half hours just double kick and go for endurance not for speed, because if you have endurance, you automatically have speed. First I warm up, and then I practice. Until now I practice a constant speed of 150-155 BPM and then I play 160 BPM for 5-10 minutes and after that I go back to 150-155 BPM for a while and then repeat. My fastest speed is 200 BPM, for a few seconds and 180 for 30 seconds. I do it every single day at least once and if I have enough time I do it twice a day. It's like you said, it's only possible if you have enough time every day, and I'm really happy that I have that! It's a lot but I think it really gets payed off after a while of doing it! It helped me a lot. So I was able to cover Eagle Fly Free or Faster Than The Flame with triplets on the kick at 200 bpm. With practice everything is possible🤘🤘🤘

I used to always play with tight springs but could never get what I wanted out of the playing. Finally after 30 years decided to back the tension all the way off. I'm 40 playing double kicks like I'm 22 lol. Amazing how much it changed my playing capabilities.

Muscle group involvement. I'd just like to highlight the most important moment of this video at 9:45. That's IT!! That's the one thing that I'm unconsciously doing, which as you describe, throws off balance. This is the missing link. Just keep in mind all the time with the weak foot. Calf! Claf! Calf! :)

This might sound like a stupid question but is a 45 degree angle the factory settings on a chain drive pedal such a pearl eliminator or tama iron cobra where the beater is central to the marker? Or is it a bit further forward and closer to the head?

Thanks Marthyn, this is so spot on. I finally can feel how to relax my right upper leg and now finally I'm using my ankle to do the motion without any upper leg involvement. Thanks for the tips. My weak leg is a problem as are my pedal settings. I also have an issue on my AL2's where the locking screw on the shaft slips, making my left foot board go lower then the right, which in consequence makes the beater bounce off the head and not actually give it a nice stroke. If just fells sloppy. When you mentioned your missing ingredient of having your left hip flexor contracted being to your detriment, I wonder if that was as simple as it was actually just throwing your balance off. It seems like no matter what I do, even just basic 16th are sloppy. That said, remove the pedals, and I can play on a practice pad with my feet on the floor no problems. nice clean even and fast. Once there is tension under that left foot, it just feels weird.

Hey dude, I love my Axis pedals, but I hate that drive shaft design. ACD Unlimited makes an upgraded version that doesn't have this problem; I've had mine for a year now with no complaints.

@@TheDivergentDrummer Huge pain, for sure! I had better luck starting the drum key screw until it makes contract, snugging the two set screws down completely, and then tightening the drum key one all the way; having the drum key screw in too far before the Allen screws were in place caused the shaft to slip more often, in my experience. Definitely not much fun to have to dig out the hex keys in the middle of a set. The breaking point for me ended up being those exposed bearings; I got tired of trying to find the parts in my rug and put them back together.

I have been struggling with this lately. I’ve been playing lots of punk rock lately. My peddle feels like my spring tension is border line to strong to be fast. When I focus on it and kinda add the oomph it needs the peddle feels like it sticks and doesn’t come back quick. Weird issue

I'm just a beginner drummer with a single pedal. I'm working on my foot speed. When I sit down fresh at the kit my speed is getting better and better. However I can only go for a couple minutes and then it's like I can't even get a double kick in. If I walk away for a couple hours and come back the same thing happens. I can only go for a minute or two. Is that normal for a beginner?
