For anyone out there considering Marthyn’s courses, just do it. I bought Bass Drum Mastery a little over two years ago and it’s transformed my playing. I would still be at 125/130 BPM rather than 190/200 if not for him. Thank you Marthyn!

@Spiffco Bot. I don’t think anyone has suggested that. This is all about pushing boundaries. As drummers, we work from day one trying to speed up our hands, but, strangely, you don’t hear the BPM argument directed at snare work. Speed is just another tool to be used when required. Even if you can, doesn’t mean you have to. BUT, if you can’t, you can’t.

Very helpful, thank you. I played metal drums until my mid 30s. Took a break, and when i tried again at 40 yrs old it was GONE. And i mean 100% gone. Im in the process of rebuilding my double and currently im experiencing the fast cat problem. Its those medium tempo ranges that are giving me trouble. Im going to try your tricks to fix it. But understanding the problem is half the trouble, and thats where your video helped me most. 👍

Jake I’m in the exact same situation. I was a teen drummer and started again in my 40’s. After seeing these I noticed I was always playing wrong as a youth, tensing and with no control. Also, I wasn’t even able to play past 120bpm because I played with my whole leg otherwise. Now I’m starting slow, with zero memory from my old days. I notice my legs want to find old habits cheating w tensing and I stop immediately, and slow down again. I currently suck at 90-95 bpm with control and just keep hammering trying another few bpm each day. Same with double strokes. I understand your pain.

This video is extremely helpful. I’m a rock drummer or stomper. Not which one yet but will figure it out. I was curious to see if u ever seen a drummer who uses his bass drum to keep timing during fills. Using it just like a hi hat would keep time. This is how I played for years. Never knew it was wrong or not common. Super weird doing fast rolls without stomping that bass drum through it

@@timdioko1332 I learned the proper way to play the ankle technique with my right foot by increasing the beater swing and lowering the bpm, focusing on control rather than speed. I guess I‘ll lower my seat when playing in the pads to get that calves in shape. Yesterday I played with the tensions of springs, distance from the pedal, foot placement on the pedal & bass drum head tension. I kinda feel I got it now on the big kit as I felt no tension in the hip & used the swing as much as possible. To focus more on it I‘ll switch to the pads now.

Hi Marthyn! I use my calf muscles fairly well and i would probably fall into the "fast cat" category. The trouble is when i try to play slower tempos my upper thigh tenses up around the hip muscles and I can't maintain it for more than a few seconds. I sit fairly high on the throne and not too close to the bass drum. Could my leg muscles be damaged?

Hey Marthyn! I just wanted to ask, if you have ever experienced something I call "being overfocused" on certain part or fill (in my case triplet doublebass fill in 16 rythm now). It drives me crazy, because when I compose the part to song, it works great, but after some time, when I screw the fill time to time, I start to "overfocus" on that part every time we play the song and result is often bad. Thanks, cheers!

I'm also learning the ankle technique but my problem is that I can only play it at 200bmp, not above or below. At 200 It comes pretty naturally. What would you recommend at least to try to slow it down a bit? Thanks!!

You need to control the beater swing with the calf muscle. Follow marthyns tutorials and start from 140 onwards. You need to arrive to 200 from 140, that way you'll do 200 with full control and also all the other tempos below it.

@michaelcm9283
@michaelcm9283 3 жыл бұрын
Because your mind cant controlled well your legs' muscles. Must try beat by beat, bar by bar. Start from practicing 1 beat @ 160 you said, then play 2 beats long. Then 1 bar long, Then 1,2,4,8, 16 bars etc. Practice 1 hour daily. If you can play same speed ( make legs not speeding up themselves ) , jump to 161 BPM Thats my advicing.
