Martial Arts Instructor Reacts: Banshee - Damien Sanchez Vs Lucas Hood
Banshee is an American action television series created by Jonathan Tropper and David Schickler originally appearing on the Cinemax network beginning on January 11, 2013.
Set in the small town of Banshee in Pennsylvania Amish country, the series' main character is an enigmatic ex-con (Antony Starr), who assumes the identity of Lucas Hood, the town's murdered sheriff, to hide from powerful crime lord Rabbit (Ben Cross). Imposing his own brand of justice, Hood attempts to reconcile with his former lover, Rabbit's daughter Anastasia (Ivana Miličević), who has herself adopted an assumed identity, married, and raised a family during Hood's incarceration. Hood struggles to maintain his new identity while still embracing crime alongside his partners Job (Hoon Lee) and Sugar (Frankie Faison), and coming into conflict with local kingpin Kai Proctor (Ulrich Thomsen).

This was such a great show. The story is that the main character gets out of prison, stops at a bar where the new sheriff for the town of Banshee stops on his way to take over the position. The real sheriff (Hood) gets killed in a bar fight with a couple of thugs at said bar. The recently released convict takes over his identity and becomes the sheriff in his place. He continues to do criminal stuff while being a lawman in his own way. You never even find out what the guys name actually is. Its really good.

This is one of the reasons, when people ask me if I teach self-defence, I say 'No, I teach Muay Thai and Brazilian JiuJitsu', because the second you add in rules, it becomes a sport; it's no longer like a self-defence. The guys who train definitely have a better chance of looking after themselves, but you don't train to have your ear bitten off."_ That's the simplest and clearest explanation I've ever heard for the differences between training in a fighting style and self-defence.

In this series, the reason why Hood beats this MMA "champ" is because it was outside the ring. Figuratively and actually. The "champ" clearly was more skilled in the techniques of fighting mixed martial arts but the second it went outside the ring, he was done. Hood was in prison and learned all the dirty tricks to win fights. That's why he won. He doesn't play by any rules. Good video!

An additional layer to this fight, the lead (the sheriff, we never learn his real name, he's under an assumed identity) is having very blatant flashbacks to when he was beat up and threatened with sexual assault in prison by a huge formidable man. The victim in this episode is someone he personally identifies with, having experienced similar trauma to her. So he does this big difficult fight, all while dealing with his own trauma, he's dealing with physical and mental strain.

The thing about Hood in this series is that most fights he gets in, he seems in way over his head. Like in this fight, he usually has to take a lot, before he can turn things around by getting dirty. Somebody pointed out that the scene is better shot than I expected. In the early stages of the fight, they're in Sanchez's ring and fighting "by the rules", and thus Sanchez has the upper hand. Once Hood is kicked out of the ring, the "rules" go away and he fights dirty, eventually winning. Really nice touch by the writer/director.

Excellent point concerning sport v.s. street. It's why when anyone asks me about learning "self defense" I tell them that's a great term that martial arts schools use so they don't sound like psychopaths, but in reality, in the real world, if you don't practice "self offense" you may wind up being a statistic. It comes down to mentality - whenever I have trained anyone, one of my first tenets is you can go green when you are in your home. The second before you open the door to go outside, you switch to yellow alert level. You stay there as you move through the outside world. You never stare at your shoes as you walk, and HELL NO not your damn cell phone. Be alert and aware in every circumstance, and most cowards who may consider you a target, will quickly move on to the next because they perceive awareness and strength. This is especially true for women. When I've trained women, I've taught them the swiftest and most brutal ways to destroy an attacker. This cinematic clip is great entertainment (it really is a great program - I enjoyed it), but it is completely unrealistic that nobody else jumped in on either side. In the real world, remember, if there is 1, there is 2. If there is 2, there is 3 and so on. You may not see them at first, but always expect cowards to move in packs and employ predatory tactics to flank and corner (and attack you from behind). They are bold in numbers, and nearly always draw strength from one figure they consider the alpha. These days, I prefer teaching people how to shoot. 🙂

There is a massive difference between martial arts and self-defense. Out in the street, there are no rules, no mat, no referees. More often, weapons and multiple attackers are involved. Anything goes.

for me, I try to avoid conflict if at all possible. Luckily I have been able to avoid it so far, outside of 2 occasions but they were over very quickly, again, luckily. However, the confidence you get, knowing that you can handle yourself if the need arises in invaluable

I use to just describe this show as "balls to the wall". There isn't a single episode in the series that doesn't have "oh shit!" moments or some amazing fight of some kind.

Banshee was a phenomenal Tv series. Every supermarket near the locations must have been out of celery sticks for months, cuz the sound effects dept would have bought them all!

Banshee certainly did things with fight scenes that I'd never seen before, and considering how many fight scenes have been made, and how many I've seen, that's a remarkable thing. They way they did this was perfect. A trained fighter against a street fighter, and we clearly see the pro dominating, until it turns into a street-fight and all the rules go out the window. Then it's bottle over the head, bitten ear, bitten leg, nut shot, blocking with the elbow (which he had done to him in prison), throat strike, split finger webbing, headbutt, torn/dislocated elbow/shoulder and a serious beating. All the way through the series, Hood comes across as a very capable fighter, but what elevates him is he fights dirty too.

No matter who wins or looses, neither one of them is going to be in good shape in the morning. Thats how I feel about fighting. Im not worried about winning or loosing, but you going to know you been somewhere, regardless of the outcome.

I am so glad you decided to review this show... and one of the first, and somehow still most brutal, fight scenes that it delivered! You could have a whole channel devoted to this show's fights. EDIT: Also, expected the 'elbow-block' to be called out as bullshit, was surprised!
@BurridgeMartialArts604
@BurridgeMartialArts604 2 жыл бұрын
The elbow block requires a lot of precision, and I wouldn't do it vertically like that because it would be really easy to miss their hand, but can definitely be done. Yoel Romero has been known utilise a 'visor guard' or 'cross arm guard' which is a high guard with the elbows out, in the UFC, he actually managed to break Robert Whittaker's hand with it during their second fight

Never seen the series. But from experience in seeing actual street fights. This was scary accurate with the amount of "dirty" tricks there are. When a real fight breaks out, survival is the only thing that matters and survival doesn't have rules.

My Mother was a US Marine. She told me that if I ever got into a fight that I should always focus on injuring limbs. If you take out the limbs, men falter faster. She explained the idea of body shots and head shots are not as consistent in ending a fight because you don’t know what your opponent can tolerate. Taking away a limb or two? No one can tolerate it.
