The fight choreograph was designed by Dato Edwel Yusri, the grandmaster of Pencak Silat Harimau (Tiger Silat) of West Sumatera, the style they use in the story. He played as Yuda's teacher in the movie. However the true style of PSH is too brutal for the screen and Iko's character here is just a good hearted boy not a killing machine, so they tweak by adding some freestyles into the choreograph. Iko and Yayan also help with the choreograph. Iko use his own style of Tiga Berantai Silat in most of the fight scene.

Merantau is something that many guy from the specific Indonesian sub-culture that the character representing there, are doing. Basically, in the Indonesian sub-culture of Minangkabau, it’s traditionally expected for boys to do journey to get their own success story and riches. The reason is mainly because Minangkabau is a largely matrilineal society where family names and inheritances are inherited by daughters. So, Minang boys of baby boomer and above generations are famous for doing merantau. Merantau are probably not that popular anymore with millenial and newer generations, because the matrilineal is no longer that big, not to mention more and more families started to changed into patrilineal from western and arabic cultural influences, on top of influences from other Indonesian sub-cultures that are already patrilineal to begin with, considering that cultural mixing through mariages does happens. Btw, i’m a half-Minang of milenial generation myself, but not from one of the matrilineal families.

The main fight choreographer for this movie is Datuak Rajo Gampo Alam, the grand master of West Sumatra Harimau Silat, so the movement has many grappling like locks.

Earlier in the movie, Yuda did say that he was the better fighter while his older brother was the smarter one. When Yuda fought the last two guys, he couldn't outmatch them with his fighting skills so he outsmarted them by figuring out how they fight and was able to land more hits in the second round than the first round. Took his older brother's advice in that last fight

**Arm breaks in a movie** Ah, the sound of learning. PS - One thing I absolutely love is how he repeatedly ALMOST gets to dislocate a joint, but one of the other guys interrupts it. Interrupted actions are so compelling in choreo and really escalate the stakes.

Fyi Merantau is the Iko’s first movie. The story is basically about the journey of pencak silat expert from little town. So hope you notice that Iko create the merantau fight coreography with mostly pencak silat signature move even in traditionally authentic ways. It is different with other Iko’s movie like The Raid. Pencak silat in The Raid is just personally iko’s background, and then the coreography shows the common fighting move. So i suggest you to watch entire Merantau movie.

Evans made this film to fund The Raid 2. It didn't get enough, so he made The Raid, and slightly altered his script for his dream film to be a sequel to the hit success The Raid to ensure it gets greenlit this time.

The guy in the white shirt (Laurent Buson) is a member of a martial arts team called Z Team. One of their better fight scenes is a 2004 short film called "Duel". I think the delayed axe kick is one of his signature moves since he uses it in several of the films he's been in.

Hi, when you mention fights, you can't avoid Chinese movies, maybe you can make a reaction to "wuxia" move, it's some fights are really cool, like in crouching tiger hidden dragon 1, the fight scene of "limubai" and the girl in the temple is really good. although some say that is just fantasy, not real fight but the artistic value is indisputable.

Don’t know if you’ll see this or even care. I came across your channel the other day and for the most part do enjoy your vids. But there’s one thing that prevents me from subbing because I can’t continue watching like this. You’ve either forgotten or neglected the fact that most people watch these vids on tablets or phones, in sunlight etc. And 80% of the screen is taken up by you and needless background. While the video we’re supposed to follow along with is much smaller and tucked away in the corner. Needs to be other way around, it’s very hard to actually see the vid and follow along with what your saying. If not for that I’d definitely sub, just my two cents. Take it for what you will.
