both of you introduced good ideas: - Jesse's idea of shadow boxing before practicing the drill with a partner was great, less stress makes it easy to remember the moves. - Oliver's idea of teaching bunkai during the Kata training was great, knowing what you are doing, instead of just what to do, is a great way to remember the forms.

As someone with a background in traditional martial arts (kenpo and tae kwon do) who transitioned to MMA about ten years ago, I normally watch your videos half liking them and half shaking my head. However, I really, really liked this one! I loved how Oliver showed the students how the kata moves could be applied, and Jesse's use of the mirror before partner drilling was great. It's a really good reminder that we all have things we can learn from each other. Also, Jesse, you should try that ice bath after the intense MMA session, it does wonders for muscle recovery.

I liked how each of you borrowed from your respective disciplines to teach each class. For example - in Katas, it’s easy to get lost in its purpose for newer students, and Oliver helped bring it home by deconstructing each move with partner work (partner work is big in MMA and Muay Thai) to show real life application.
@eamonob84

That was probably the best thing about his class: even if the students don't remember any of the specific techniques they did that night, they will still remember the principles of looking for real applications in kata.

@@KARATEbyJesse I really respect your dedication to Karate, it motivates me to put extra effort into my Martial Arts and I appreciate it! If you haven't already, could you try to make a video on grappling? Things like Jiu-Jitsu and Wrestling would be really entertaining to watch and I think you'd have fun learning them too. It's a really technical art, there's a lot of holds to switch to constantly, trying to counter your opponent's own grapples and holds and being constantly aware of their movements.

That is hard you both did very well. Honestly in my opinion I think Oliver just because when I asked my self the first name that came to mind was Oliver Enkampe. However, I really like how Jesse removed the distraction of the other person and did practice on the mirror. As well as pay very close attention to the students. Oliver Enchampe impressed me when he started teaching the students a framework to use as a self-defense. Personally I believe your brother is a way better karate instructor. Just like how you are a way better MMA instructor. You two are both amazing. So much love and heart you both fight with honour. Way to go Oliver Enkampe. 👏

Fun video, I really enjoyed it. Watching Oliver explain and show practical uses behind the moves reminds me of the Taekwondo instructors my daughter works with. Sure, the kids can learn to mimic all the moves for their poomsae (kata), but when the instructors start to break it down and demonstrate why they do those moves and what they're designed to do, you can see a lot of the students start to connect the movement to the real application and it helps make the forms more engaging. My daughter helps with instructing the younger students and she applies that method to teaching them the forms, what the moves are meant to be used for.
