As a driver, he raced - and beat - the likes of Senna, Schumacher, and Hakkinen, but for a whole generation of F1 fans, Martin Brundle is ‘Mr Grid Walk’ - a man whose expert analysis and revolutionary approach to F1 broadcasting have won him multiple awards. In the fifth instalment of Beyond The Grid, presented by Bose, he chats with Tom Clarkson about his junior career, F1 glory days, and how he progressed to the commentary box...

Martin himself explained it - he was close, but not close enough (in F1). And he did have the chances by racing with top teams, but always falling a bit short. Great guy and sports car racer either way.

This is sheer gold. Honest, forthright and insightful as he always is. Brundle is one of the best communicators in F1 - he has added so much to my understanding of the sport through many years of commentary and he brings more than just experience of the sharp end of F1, he is intelligent and articulate enough to explain it to the public. For his sake I regret that he never won the F1 world championship, but for the rest of us I'm so glad he didn't as he would no doubt have not needed to enter the world of TV commentary had he been world champion.

I think he’s been the perfect transition between Murray and Crofty. He’s bridged the gap between two very distinct eras of F1. I remember Murray’s unbridled emotion, enthusiasm, and unadulterated love of F1 when I listened as a child. My father is from the “age of Murray”. My dad, like most guys of his generation, are very set in their ways. I think we both now enjoy the commentary team now due to Martin bridging that gen gap seamlessly. And he’s brutally honest and to the point- qualities that are quite scant as of late.

Engaging interview. But why is everyone upset if Brundle is biased or not. You are all biased. I am biased. Everyone has biases. It's called having an opinion and a point of view. Some opinions are worth more than others because of life and professional experience but as a human being we will have opinions. If anyone is upset because of an opinion then that's on the person who is upset, not on the person who has an opinion. Plus Brundle is a commentator not a journalist. If he was a journalist then yes he would be bound by professional ethics to stifle his opinions, as a commentator he has the privilege of being able to state his opinion... Which is just that, an opinion, nothing more and therefore can be accepted or discarded by the viewer and should not cause upset. People take things way too personally and actually believe that opinions are connected to identity and as such defend them to the death. Both are ultimately unreal, so relax and have fun. It's sports, not politics you'll live to see another day.

What is up with all the dislikes? I mean, I haven't watched it yet, but it has just been posted so nobody did. I mean, I know Martin can be a little biased while commenting on Sky Sports, but damn, nobody forces you to listen to his podcast. And even if you think he is biased I think it should be worth listening to, as he's been around F1 for many many years, he probably has many stories and anecdotes to tell. I definitely don't mind this type of guests. If you want just the current drivers, Beyond the Grid would end just in 5 months considering that they post one podcast per week and there is only 20 drivers.

It's true .. Martin's commentary is what got me hooked to F1 .. he "forced" us to look differently at what was going on. Spot things like how a driver handles the wheel .. what the engine sounds like in this or that corner (obviously harder nowadays with silly halo & engine noise) .. Showed me that the "car+driver ... image" (if you like) isn't as "static" going round the tracks as one might imagine at first. There's loads of feedback one can get from just looking on TV. How comfortable is that fast guy actually in his car, or is he working his a** off for every tenth in every corner ? Stuff like that. Awesome ! I'm forced to watch on french telly nowadays .. and altho they are doing a descent job .. I miss Martin every single race.

Raced with Senna in F3, raced in the same team as Schumacher in '92 in a solid Benetton and got pally with Murray on the talktalk from '97 - he's one of the best racers that didn't win a race! He understood the race craft...he wasn't given the right car to win that race or maybe races - or maybe too gentlemanly to take the equipment to the the edge!

This man is a F1 legend. He has had many challenges over his lifetime and he will continue to be one of the best in term of his driving experience and how it shaped his commentary. Yes his experience makes him biased in certain aspects but ALL the experienced drivers respect him and that is a rarity nowadays. We have to remember that most of technicians, team bosses and race engineers know what he has done. His knowledge is a gift to others. His races against Schumacher and Senna were spectacular. Let's not forget it. Sky Sports keep him with his continuous wealth of knowledge and expertise. He's British like me so yes, Sky Sports will ALWAYS be biased on British drivers. This is the same with all TV companies with drivers from their own country. This will never change as it's pride. Great to hear about his driving career. Cannot wait for the next Beyond the Grid.

Brundle is a decent man... I respect his insight knowledge and technicality. Just wishing he could be more respectful and not too biased. He just have a bit too much ego and seems couldn't let go some of his bitternes. Coulthard is more open and can admitted when he made mistakes or not up to some of his ex-rival. He can let go of his past, and i respect Coulthard more for that. It's too bad that Coulthard couldn't sound more clearly when he speak, so a bit difficult to understand his words. I think Jonathan Palmer is the best... He praised the british driver if they make a good job and worthy of a praise. But at the same time dont back off to critisize them and not seeing them in rose tinted when they made a (silly) mistake, such when Hill ram into the back of Schumacher on Monza '95 or spun at Nurbugring and Suzuka. But maybe for that reason that Jonathan Palmer didn't get the invitation on ITV. James Allen is the worst... Constantly screaming like a hysterical cheerleader, then relied and comment on gossip and bombastic view... He even has the gut to ridicule and bashing driver while he himself was not an ex F1 racer.

Sure when Martin was in F1 he was in a rain-affected race in which marshals and a car-moving truck were on track. Martin spun out, injured a marshal, and nearly hit the truck. In many rain-affected races subsequently when he was commentating he stated he felt removing cars from the track with those big yellow trucks with marshals also vulnerable would result in the death of a track worker or a driver. Tragically he was proven correct.

One of the greats of Motorsport. Martin was unlucky considering his F1 career. Mostly driving for unreliable teams or great teams that just werent at their peak when Brundle drove for them. His best chance came with Benetton in 1992 scoring 6 podiums. Sadly he was dropped the following season. Even though he doesnt admit it he was way less capable than the champions of this era, but he deserved a cool car and a team believing in him. In any case he is a legend for driving and testing so many f1 cars from past decades.

I like how he wants to add safety before going flat out.

For all english speaking fans of F1 saying Martin Brundle is biased. I exchange him for Villeneuve as commentator everyday! I actually watch F1 in english now because comments are far better than in French since the broadcast went private and the historical commentators are not doing F1 anymore. So please don't be too angry to Martin Brundle.

Junior Cyclist yeah. The Dislikes show not the whole truth. I actually like him very much. He is a very smart Guy, and actually quite funny. And every Commentator is biased towards his own Country, so calling him out for that is wrong in my opinion.

Because they perceive he's biased against certain teams. I've been listening to him commentate for years and have never picked up any real bias. In addition there are a load of armchair fans who think they know more than his despite his extensive experience actually racing the cars.

These interviews are gold for us fans but can you please use decent microphones and perhaps a sound isolated room to really get the best production values possible? Heavens, extended interviews with the f1 elite and it sounds like it is in a cafeteria. I am sure you can do it considering what the team buildings look like in the paddock. Pretty please?
