In the event the abuser is nearby, you can ensure that you don’t get caught trying to get help.
If you are having feelings of harming yourself or someone else or even just need someone to talk to, please contact your local mental health facility, call 911 or call Mental Health America who operate the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK. I’m Tasmanian. We don’t mention this monsters name, but thank you for covering that awful awful day. (You missed the nurse he stabbed with a pair of scissors in prison hospital and the ferry he missed getting on at PA where passengers would have had no escape.) The hole he left on the island is real and still very raw. The Broad Arrow is gone, replaced by a memorial garden. The bus parking space is now bush and a site focused on boat building, and there is a whole new heavily controlled entrance building. You don’t drive into the site anymore either. He is dead to us. Not one of us anymore. He is a monster.

@@dan5609 We can still have guns in Australia, just not assault rifles. And let's be honest, the proof is in the pudding. Not a single mass shooting since. I wasn't a fan of PM Howard, but at least he has that legacy. By your hysterical attachment to high-powered weapons, I assume you're American, and think laws drawn up hundreds of years ago shouldn't be updated to reflect modern technology? @@sahd0w He was definitely born with mental issues. But his dad did not help by giving him a gun at a young age. From a young age he had access to a weapon that he could harm animals and property with and developed an obsession with it. Maybe if his dad didn't give him access to a gun, things would have developed differently. Don't get me wrong, even if his dad didn't give him a gun, he still could have went on to do similar things. This is the problem. Not gun control. Dr/patient confidentiality goes out the window when someone is deemed a threat to themselves or the community, like in this case. He should have been committed when they had the chance. That doesnt mean locked in a box with the key thrown out, but in a place that can actually work within his means to allow him a harmless, happy life.

@@J2thaAMES1 100% facts. It's like when the Catholic Church (or any organized religion) claims that the church is morally responsible to protect their parishioners privacy at all cost. Even if- said parishioner- has committed some horrible crime/crimes against children. I've nothing against religion, but that's bull****. Doctors, religious leaders, teachers etc. should all be legally required to report things like this, and they should he held accountable if they do not.

@@allisonconnor3310 Can you imagine the amount of pain that could have been avoided? Especially in the example you use. Almost always theres a ripple effect that lasts at least a generation. Theres no sense in it. Dr/patient or confessional confidentiality is IMO used to avoid stigmatization within the community for things people really shouldnt be ashamed of, but still are. It is not and should not be used in defense of crimes whether before, during or after they have been found out.

@@J2thaAMES1 you have an excellent way of phrasing things and your absolutely correct. I'm a big believer in individual rights, and I don't like involving the government unless it's absolutely necessary. However, there are limits. I don't want to get in to politics too much, but gun control isn't the answer. (In my opinion) Look at how long it took for the police to respond. This individual was mentally unstable and *wanted to murder as many people as possible.* People like that are almost always going to find a way. They'll use guns, knives, bombs etc. If this mans psychiatrists had taken action- and had been *legally required* to take action- those people would still be alive. They were sitting ducks. They had no way to defend themselves, or their loved ones when they need to most. All strict gun control really does in the long run, is ensure that the ONLY people who will be armed in these instances, are the murderer and the police. Which might turn out okay. Provide the police are there to respond.

This was a really emotional one for me reliving that day, it was fucking intense at the time & the intensity has not lessened much since. Wasn’t at Port Arthur that day due to a flat tyre- the best flat tyre I ever had. My partner's brother also remembers him as an odd person. I lived in Tasmania for two years, and knowing the context, I can see even more why this was inconceivable. Some of the people who worked in Port Arthur then still work there, and his name is never mentioned. A tragedy that changed the course of Australian history. When the subject was brought up to the parents they made excuses like it is just a phase or he will grow out of it etc... I think the parents don't want to admit that their child needs help and that if there is something wrong it will make them look like bad parents, but neglecting the help they need is what makes them a failure not the kids mental issues. Eventually my relative got the help he needed and is doing much better now but I can see how things could have progressed if left unchecked and I hope these stories fade away eventually as the shift to better mental health and treatment progresses.

Just one correction. If he was indeed using "full metal jacket" rounds, these are actually designed to NOT mushroom or fragment. These types of rounds actually do less damage if they do not strike bone or a major organ as they can pass straight through the body. The type of rounds that do "mushroom" and fragment are "hollow points". In fact, the Hauge Convention of 1899 prohibits the use of hollow point bullets, which is why if he had military ammunition, they would have been "full metal jacket" rounds.

Your description of “jacketed rounds” is incorrect. Especially later when you then call them “Armor Piercing”. AR-15 rifles are 5.56mm and the ammunition used was “full metal jacket”. This is the same round used in M16/M4 full automatic rifles in the military and per the Geneva Convention, this round is the one the military must use in wars.. Bullets use this design to minimize the wound inflicted and to generally not be fatal. It travels in a straight line through a body and unless hitting an organ in generally survivable. It does not fragment to cause more injury or spread out to hit other people. It is also not armor piercing.

@Mark Garvin he does display left-leaning views. I don't really think it's pathetic, though. It's fairly reasonable to make a mistake in research for these kind of video. Also it is pretty understandable to get annoyed at people who try to discredit tragedies. It's also sickening when you try to say that these things don't happen whenever people rally for gun restrictions. Before you dismiss me, I am fairly right-leaning in the firearm debate. (pro gun) I think we need to acknowledge the problems with advanced weaponry falling into the hands of monsters, while also not preventing well-meaning citizens from being allowed to defend themselves.

I hadn’t heard of this one. Seems like the medical profession and police where he grew up really blew it. They can’t have expected his parents to live forever. When he was shooting an air soft guns at strangers, he should have been in mental health care. You’d think a bunch of slaughtered sheep in the same place his father was found would have been a major clue. Sounds like he had reactive attachment disorder that was never treated or he was just born a psychopath. What an incredibly handsome young man he was. A perfect predator.
