MLK discussing the Guaranteed Minimum Income in 1967.
---
Andrew Yang isn’t a politician. He’s an entrepreneur who knows how the economy works-and he’s terrified about the growing automation of American jobs. That’s why he’s running for President as a Democrat in 2020. America has lost its direction, and it’s time we put humanity first. Andrew wants to get America back on track-to be a nation of opportunity, freedom, equality, and abundance. It all starts with the Freedom Dividend, $1,000/month for every American adult over the age 18, no strings attached.

I've read detractors of Yang saying that this is just a soundbite and MLK is not actually talking about UBI here. I'm interested in the truth and I'm willing to play devil's advocate, so I looked it up to the best of my abilities. Based on his own writings, he was absolutely advocating for UBI, and of course you can research this yourself. In a way I don't even care, either UBI is a good idea or it isn't, and we should judge that based on the current situation, but it's nice to see that MLK was in favor of it as well

Andrew Yang is the real deal. At first he intrigued me because he explained difficult topics so easily and matter of factedly. Andrew Yang is a strong leader, intelligent, eloquent and has experience, solutions and vision to bring America into a brighter future. Facing this 4th industrial revolution that will affect huge populations of Americans in unprecented proportions, we need to think long and hard and demand structural change for the citizens of the world's most wealthiest country. Human value does not equal economic value. This is such a strong statement, that us Americans have often forgotten. Our value is not tied into our work. The people who have to make the hard decisions to forego pay and provide care to children, the future of our country, or family members, or choose to spend their time in other meaningful ways that give back to society have immense value to society. The freedom divident is like a tax credit, put into the hands of the people so we may choose where we put our money. Not in giant corporations who store their money offshore, giving little back to our communities. The GDP and unemployement rate (only includes those seeking employment) or archaic and not reflective of the well being of our country. Our labor participation rate is at record lows. Only 63% of our adults are in the labor force or actively seeking work. We know that our death rate is at record high since the Spanish flu, which is terrifying. We need to start using metrics of our country to reflect what is important to us. We do not know what we do not measure. Andrew Yang has my support. He maybe a nontraditional politician, but he is undoubtedly committed to solving America's problems. Lets exercise our right to vote, vote on the right candidate, not on whom we predict will win. Andrew Yang has supporters across the aisle and I am truly hopeful that America can do better.

Makes sense 💯! That’s why years later there’s so much corruption, desperation for money for basic needs, so much homelessness, so much disparity, so much violence, so much thefts and car jacking, so much poverty , sub standard housing, so much unfairness in who gets healthcare services and who doesn’t etc. It should be a human right for Everyone to have a decent home to live in and for Everyone to have an income to buy basic things such as pay bills, mortgage , healthcare products and medications, food clothing etc. Too many people fall through the cracks from a broken government. Many need disability help and either they suffer and die or are forced to work in severe pain and illness. It’s not enough housing help for the victims of a broken government who snatched taxes out their work income and then when they have work injuries or injuries the same government turns its ugly hairy backs on them and offer no help. But they voted them in office and paid taxes. Worker’s compensation frauds them and doesn’t compensate, social security takes years yet people are hurting , hungry and need to survive with $0 income. Then their forced to find sub standard subsidized housing with violent desperate neighborhoods, black deadly toxic mold, poor plumbing, poor HUD or housing authority environments that make them prisoners in their own apartments . Section 8 sells people vouchers and cause many to be homeless. Pervert landlords and slum lords don’t make repairs and poor tenants invest money in others property’s that they themselves will never own to pass annual inspections. It’s robbery! The righteous Lord loves righteousness. People have to live their neighbors as themselves! God is Love! Vengeance belongs to God! God hates evil! Every knee will bow and every tongue tongue shall confess that Jesus is Lord!

"Two conditions are indispensable if we are to ensure that the guaranteed income operates as a consistently progressive measure. First, it must be pegged to the median income of society, not the lowest levels of income. To guarantee an income at the floor would simply perpetuate welfare standards and freeze into the society poverty conditions. Second, the guaranteed income must be dynamic; it must automatically increase as the total social income grows. Were it permitted to remain static under growth conditions, the recipients would suffer a relative decline." MLK (1967) "Where Do We Go From Here? Chaos or Community"

MLK Jr. is a venerable figure who had many admirable qualities, but his understanding of economics was not one of them. Despite all he had gone through and seen in his life in the form of brutal and disgusting discrimination and oppression, very often mandated and sustained by both state and federal law; he somehow maintained a faith that those same powerful and bigoted cartels he had resisted were appropriate to depend upon for lifting everyone up and sustaining them to meet their basic needs-- apparently without fully considering the pitfalls of such dependency even if they had somehow merited that trust. It's a headscratcher, but there are no perfect heroes. This is an issue where Malcolm X got it right where MLK Jr. fell short.

@@teknoah Milton Friedman was also for UBI. It was actually bipartisan more than anything else. Still, the republican party of the past was vastly different from the repubs of today. They were more for the working class while the dems were for big business. It began to shift with FDR and the New Deal, later followed by the Southern strategy of Goldwater for the repubs and later Clinton for the dems. Still, the switch was a gradual one and it's very possible that MLK was a republican seeing as he was a preacher and morally conservative.
