A fabulous piece of music! The late Romantic era was the heyday of the symphony, and this just continues in the same tradition 50 years afterwards. I wish more of today's composers took the same approach 😉

There's this misunderstanding that serialism and dodecaphonism are still dominant forces in contemporary art music, but that simply isn't the case any longer. There's some very good music being composed nowadays, and the demand for video games has been important in that regard. Much as I like Scherber's pieces, I do consider them to be an artistic dead end - they're basically Bruckner pastiches. Good ones, but not nearly as original as Scherber would make one believe.

Beautiful music, but perhaps it's more a sprawling, episodic symphonic poem rather than a symphony in the usual formal sense. In any case, it's a fascinating and enjoyable work, much more than just 'bruckner pastiches'. I do hear an original vice here.

For those that enjoy this late romantic style..Wetz symphony no 3 is in the same vein if not better. Waiting for the Sherber 3rd in full, there is one here on YT but it's cut down to about 12 minutes

Oh, Wetz is miles better, although I prefer his 2nd to the 3rd.

Большое спасибо за публикацию: я,как и большинство,сегодня впервые узнал о Мартине Шербере. Автор был определённо одарённым человеком,прекрасно овладевшим германской стилистикой и техникой композиции,хотя оригинальностью его композиторское мышление не отличалось. Но оригинальность в искусстве не есть великая добродетель и достоинство: лучше быть талантливым традиционалистом нежели посредственным новатором. Удивительно лишь сохранение такого стиля в 1952 году,ни в ладоинтонационной,ни в ладогармонической сфере здесь даже Вагнером не пахнет.
