@@bomcabedal There is an entry with the movement information on IMSLP. It provides the information I have given, but not the Andante sostenuto introduction to the finale. That said, listening to the finale indicates you're right. There is a slow introduction. And I'm just as certain that IMSLP is correct that the Scherzo is marked Vivace. I'll see if I can let them know on the IMSLP Forum.

By googling "Hans Wolf Klavierwerke I und Op. 7", you can see photos of the disc contains the other performance, on the back the program list indicates that the second movement is called "Exotic Dance Scene (Exotische Tanzszene)", and the third bears the title "Finale. Burlesque (Burleske)"

This is what I found on Wikipedia about him: Karl Hugo Myrtelius , born 11 July 1892 in Nosaby , died 24 October 1977 in Slottsstaden , [ 1 ] was a Swedish military musician, composer and arranger. He graduated as a music director in 1921. As a military musician, he was the leader of Gotland's infantry regiment's band in Visby during the years 1924-1927 and of the band at Halland's infantry regiment in Halmstad 1927-1947. The march The Colonel is dedicated to the regimental commanders over the years. After his retirement, he settled in Malmö where he conducted some amateur music choirs. He was also for a time a teacher of counterpoint and instrumentation at the Academy of Music in Malmö .

Dear Mr. Cabedal, it is with admiration that I see and listen to (and like) archive recordings that you post of Flemish composers. Do you have access to the BRT archive or where do you get those recordings? For example, I have been looking for years for the recording of a concert of 17/11/1973 by the BRT orchestra and Ghent choirs conducted by Fernand Terby in the Ghent opera. That concert was then broadcast several times on radio. I would especially like to hear the third work from that concert: 'Als 't bruine veld' by Jef TINEL performed by choirs and piano. Can you find it? An other example, a concert from October 1955 was recorded at the Ghent Conservatory that was entirely dedicated to Jef Tinel (choral and orchestral works conducted by Jef Dispa). I've been looking in vain for that recording for years too.... Thank you in advance for your response and best regards, Peter Leys
@bomcabedal4 ай бұрын
Hi, my older uploads mostly came from tapes (some dubbed multiple times) that had been circulating in collector circles for years. Mostly, these were radio recordings. More recent ones were things I got through contacts or dubbed myself. Regarding Tinel, I can't find the recording you refer to. I suppose you have been in touch with the Ghent Conservatory? You might also approach Gaëlle Deldime, Tinel's biographer (the bio is from around 2000, if memory serves.

Thank you for uploading this, I never managed to order the CD. You (and Christopher Muscat) must be right about the Marcia religiosa e fuga. Nothing in this symphony is even remotely close to D minor. The Andante is in A flat major, the Finale starts in C minor and ends in C major, the scherzo is in F minor, so a first movement in A flat major is fairly reasonable.
@bomcabedal4 ай бұрын
I wouldn't want to compary my knowledge of Maltese music to that of Christopher Muscat - HE is the authority here. I agree, however, that considering the dearth of documentation this is a reasonable assumption - moreover, it is more or less the only way to make sense of this composition.

Beniot composed an opera on the same subject. I uploaded its overture a few years back.
@bomcabedal4 ай бұрын
That wasn't an opera, but theatrical music to a play Emiel van Goethem. Both pieces were written to commemorate the tercentennial of the Pacification. Waelput was something of a Benoit fanboy; the final theme of this piece was directly ripped from Benoit's Oratorio De Schelde.

I'm not entirely aware of the background to the piece so can't make statements about the title's exact context, but I think both meanings (and more) can be applied to "Wunder". I can't give the URL to Duden, but do check it out.

Thank you so much for another wonderful find! Another new (to me) composer. One doesn't find that many symphonies from Italian composers as their emphasis tends toward opera. It is a shame they are for the most part ignored by orchestras. They have a totally different, and delightfully different feel than the Germanic symphonic works.

Vassallo was Maltese, in fact, and mainly wrote choral pieces for the church. However, he's clearly influenced by Italian sacred and opera music.
