A friend of mine was working on the property next door to Kate Hepburn. He saw her climbing a tree to prune some branches. She was in her mid 80's at the time. He called out, "Be careful Kate, you're an American treasure." She yelled back, "Mind your own business, young man!" A Hepburn classic that's not been heard until now!

I was just watching a doc about Second City where many from SNL and SCTV came from, including Short. And they showed Catherine O'Hara doing her own Kepburn and it was very very good. But I agree with you Short does the very best. That bit they did on SNL about relatives of the rich and famous has a bit where Short does the Hepburn and I believe it's one of the best things I've seen him do.

I wonder why she had that shaky voice later in life... Parkinsons perhaps??i know she always had a Prominent old New England accent... but as she aged it sounded like someone was shaking her as she spoke, however funny it was, she Definitely was a Dame that lived to the beat of her own drum as they would say! A Pioneer in many ways!!🥰🌹 Hoping your R.I.P. Ms. Hepburn

I know people admire Hepburn's acting skills and all that, but I've understood the praise she got for her rude behaviour. All this nonsense about her being "real" or "remarkable" or "she told it like it was" is very frustrating to read. I know she had good points, but when she felt like it she could be arrogant and rude. There's nothing praiseworthy about any of that. I guess I can look forward to accusations of jealousy or whatever. It's the same with Bette Davis. People had to make excuses for what was essentially difficult behaviour that you wouldn't put up with from a famous person.

When you’re fond of someone (if it’s a relative or an old friend) or you admire them a great deal (as is the case here), transgressions of that kind are easier to forgive. When that person occasionally has things to say few others would dare that are worth hearing, you could even grow to enjoy the delivery, including while on the receiving end. Now, with KH and BD there’s something else going on as well. They were being arrogant & in your face at a time when only men got to do that and get away with it. It took guts for female celebrities with that kind of personality not to choose to censor themselves all the time to avoid the consequences (which BD and KH both did suffer, BD especially). That’s what fans are praising here. Many non-fans too, precisely because they are aware of the social pioneering women like them were doing, whether they meant to or not.

absolutely sick to death of everyone who keeps calling out how they are VICTIMS, *women included*. egads. I, for one, am tired of bs and am calling it out for what it is. there are no victims, only volunteers. helllooooo, you there, "challenging old hollywood"! thank you. so many people just jump on the "ooooh" and "ahhhhh" "oh, looky there, it's a celebrity" bandwagon and applaud their immorality, rudeness, coarse behavior, and so on. and why? because they are brainless and immoral themselves. example, have you ever seen the View? the applauding seals in the audience responding to the sign flashing on, "laugh now" or "applause here" to the audience. just brainless, clapping seals. no discernment, no life. those who know, know. bette davis left her legacy, it's in her daughter's hurt. katherine hepburn left hers, known for sleeping with a married man who felt tremendous guilt because he had kids and yet still cheated, and it's all public knowledge. so, no morals? is this so brave? is rudeness a quality we admire now? it's their arrogance, people. theirs is a false superiority. I know lots of narcissists like this. the theme of their life is, "It's all about me, excuse me, get out of my way, I'M the ONE WHO IS IMPORTANT HERE!" So no way, behavior like this is boorish and low class but you go ahead and you do you. if anything, they show you an example of how NOT TO BE.

It's understandable. Kate was sharing some of her thoughts on the performance and then Martin "made it weird." You can call it rude, but from my viewpoint, it was Kate's prerogative to choose the type of interaction she would like, and she did actually excuse herself, so I would call it direct and honest. On the other hand Martin got a story with Kate Hepburn, and some drama and color, which he could tell for the rest of his life.

Ah, the world we live in today! Everyone - past and present - is scrutinized to the Nth degree. If they've said (or done) something even slightly quirky or disagreeable - they become offensive people in an instant. Many folks draw conclusions from reading just the 'headlines' but not the story. Someone's phone camera can snap a picture and incite a riot. In this example, Short describes the uncomfortable outcome of a meeting with a diva. He didn't really complain about it - but now many people have quickly determined that the lady in question is just awful. Well, aren't we all.

They were both great, however Kate aged better acting wise, she was still getting good roles in her 60s whereas Bette was relegated to B movies and supporting roles by this time. I admire in Bette that she was more diverse in her roles but towards the end she almost made anything they offered her because she needed the money. Also Kate was and still is the only actor to have won 4 Oscars which cemented her status as a legend.

The casual remark about " Spencer" gives it away as a largely made up story...the so called love story between the lesbian Hepburn and closeted repressed gay Tracy was legend indeed..and only that....she loved the publicity the Garson Kanin book ( himself a married closet case) gave her persona though so she eventually led that friendship take on the epic and largely false proportions it now seems to have in the public conscious....

No slouch bore a negative connotation. If I had been lucky enough to sit next to kate hepburn, I would have kept my language selective and very positive being such a big fan. @@jaytops That's one heck of a compliment Many thanks. For the record notwithstanding my mimicry I have always admired Ms. Hepburn as an actress ever since my parents forced me to watch The African Queen when i was "tweenager " .I was a already a Bogart fan by then so I really loved that movie. I have more even more admiration for the way Kate lead her life - As an independent woman ,as a pioneer and as an iconoclast. However, I think On Golden Pond is /was way overrated as a film. Way too maudlin and too much overacting and too much over emoting by the principal cast members . They were ACTING instead of being in the moment. That's the fault of the director, whomever the f he was.
