Hingis looked unbeatable here

She knew she was nearly unbeatable in '97 and so she could do anything she wanted to on the court.

Aspects of Hingis’ game actually improved after this, but she never had this type of confidence and joie de vivre after 1997. A shame, but perhaps 97 was too easy for her.

Do you agree that her forehand got worse after 97? For some weird reason.

@@plymbnc Yes I agree and I have no idea why. Not sure there was a huge technical change. She just became less confident with it and added too much topspin. It’s not like the remainder of her career was a disaster though…she played very well at times in 1999 and 2000.

@Titmuss yeah exactly. but i've always wondered what happened. i've heard she changed her grip in 1998 but nobody has ever confirmed that....

Actually her FH was not bad in 1999 summer and all the way till end of 2000. She started to hit shorter and shorter. It's probably lack of confidence and not hitting through her FHs.

I actually agree with the 1999 part! I'm not gonna comment on RG of course (still hurts as a Martina fan) but that early summer the FH was on fire again... Confidence? Grip? Not enough time to prepare the shot against bit hitters? Too many different variables I guess. @@johnieting

Yes PowerPoint hitters like Williams Sister made the life diffucult for her after 99 but the thing is Hingis shots also become loopy after 99.Even her service better in 1997.

All very well to say Hingis was superb in 1997, but Labat had no pace on her shots and her serves were very poor. Hingis too hit so many serves here which she wouldn't get away with now, but in 1997 only a handful of players would have swatted them away whereas all would now.

Agreed, the opposition was fairly soft in 97. Very few players had the power and athleticism to hurt Hingis while she could handle all other playing styles. Graf was injured, Seles and Davenport weren't fit enough, Pierce wasn't consistent enough for most of the year while the Williams sisters were just getting started. Majoli managed to put it all together just once at RG against Hingis and never again, meaning Hingis lost her best chance to win RG and the calendar year Grand Slam. The level increased significantly starting in 1998.

@@poshbo yes I agree with that in the main. I think Hingis didn't help herself by becoming less aggressive after about 98/99, but however aggressive she had been she would never have dominated again as she just didn't have the power.

how did she reach R4 here? 😂

@@tomgraham6071 agreed, early in her career Hingis ambitiously attacked the ball and always kept opponents on their heels, like in the video below. It wasn't just about hitting hard flat groundstrokes towards the lines either, she threw in drop shots, serve and volleys, lobs, everything. Seles' game was in comparison more one dimensional and her ball placement was predictable, even if the pace sometimes beat Hingis. Later on, Hingis became more passive generally and only occasionally truly attacked in matches (eg. Against Venus at USO 99 and against Serena AO 01) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j6hkf5x02LKtm40.htmlsi=pnNYbgnYCftjmFCj
