What is so interesting for me about these two great players is how their careers spanned the early professional era of tennis playing alongside King, Court, Wade and Goolagong, then they saw off a host of younger players in the middle part of their careers, Austin, Mandlikova, Jaeger, and finally faced opponents such as Graf, Seles, Sanchez-Vicario. They achieved this by becoming faster, fitter and stronger. They oversaw the transition from Wood to Graphite. They started as good stroke players with less physical strength and fitness and ended up as great and stronger athletes. They helped transform the sport and paved the way for the new era of tennis we have today.

And of course, in Martina's case she shoveled an industrial storage unit's worth of body enhancing drugs down her cakehole. Don't get me wrong, I very much doubt she was the first. Billy Jean King was always under suspicion of using performance enhancers during her very long career. And she certainly wasn't the last. The younger Williams 'sister' has managed to outdo even Martina's drug intake, in an era where testing is far more rigorous.

its also amazing how they remained great friends all along, one thing I've always liked about Chris, Martina, J.Mcenroe and Borg from that era, is that even though they were fierce competitors forming these great rivalries, they knew and acknowledged how much the other meant to them and to their success. That created this inseparable bond between Chris-Martina and J.Mcenroe-Borg and also brought out the best in them whenever they played each other. Great times!

I remember some pretty rowdy crowds back in the 70s/80s, especially when McEnroe, Borg and Connors were playing 😉 But, even to this day, crowds in the UK, are respectful enough to be silent when the server throws the ball up. What *is* noticeable to me, is how they just get on with it. None of this toweling down after every point, nor endless ball bouncing, or ritual time wasting by the likes of Djockovic and Nadal!

To me this demonstrates that the rules need to change as the equipment develop and players become bigger and stronger. This is like tennis is supposed to be: lot of skill, some tactics, and some power and speed. Now it is a lot of power and speed, some skills and a little bit of tactics. So, make the net higher, slow down the balls, draw the service line by 20 cm, etc..

Interesting how commentators often point out in later years of her career how Martina did not have a topspin backhand until the early to mid 80s after her physical reformation. Did she not hit a topspin backhand passing shot at 30 love of the first game here? I also have seen her hit it in various other 70s and early 80s matches. She didn't use it during rallies just for the sake of hitting it but she did have one.

Damn I had a crush on Chrissie back in the 70s! And her tennis fundamentals were flawless. When I started playing with mistakes, I'd remember Chrissie's technique. Even though she was a girl, the principals are universal (I"m talking about playing with heavy wooden or heavy 80s graphite, not featherweight 21st century stix with poli strings). Try a "lag and snap" windshield wiper movement with a 13 oz. (370 gr) Wilson Jack Kramer Autograph and your arm falls off after 30 minutes.

Martina was overwhelmed in the first set by Evert's game and the occassion. She settled down and relaxed in the 2nd and much as Chris let her in.

Early in their rivalry Chris dominated winning 75% of the time. Then Martina came on strong and ended up with a 60/40 advantage over Chris.

Chrissie Evert is, I suspect, fated to be forever underrated, especially beyond this age of Serena worship. That said, I would sure pay a few shekels in paradise to watch prime Martina vs. prime Serena.

Chris’s level dropped in the final games. The match was well within her grasp. Credit to Martina for holding her cool an level in the final games. Prior she had a tendency to lose it.
