Im replacing valve seals,upgraded rocker arms and "lifters" on my 04 overland. It being done with the heads on the motor and cams installed. Im using the miller tool 8516A knockoff. Highly recommend a ratcheting 3/8s breaker bar for this. Found it at H/F. Saves the hands and reduces frustration. Also picked up blue 1/4in. poly rope to feed into the combustion chamber. The ratcheting breaker bar also worked great turning the crank.

Performing this service engine in, is laborious. Having installed a new engine twice into my 2001 I can tell you with the right equipment, either a chain fall or a cherry picker engine hoist is faster and more important more precise than gimping in the valve springs. Dropping a valve into the cylinder is a night mare. I've tried the string approach but inevitably the compressor stopped and the valve slid into the cylinder. The gods were with me that day and I was able to repair the $99 Porter Cable compressor, wire had grounded out, and almost cost me an engine.

Currently rebuilding my 08 4.7 heads, well whole engine actually but purchased all new components for the heads and there is huge weight savings with the 08 parts. I bought new cams as well and each cam is right at 2lbs. Lighter than my original Oems. My originals were solid cams with the powdered metal lobes and the replacments are the hollowed shank with slightly narrower lobes with oiling holes which my oems were not... The profiles and journels are the same O.D so im just taking it as a performance gain I suppose.

Can those 08+ valve stem seals be used with the h.o. springs? I like how that style keeps the spring from deflecting. Or would you recommend running the 08+ spring/seal in place ofthe stock the 99-04 h.o. valve springs. Also just a thought, the 3.7 exhaust valve spring comes with a similar design that keeps the spring from shifting. Not sure what years but I saw them in an '04. I'm going to try and get a few to see if the h.o. valve springs will fit in them.

Hey Martin I have the same make and model Jeep as your WJ and was seeing if you could help me out. I have rebuilt my engine as a result of a head gasket leak and a broken intake. I have gotten to the point of reinstalling my intake manifold and I’m having a difficult time figuring out which vacuum hoses go where. The main one I’m unsure about is the nipple on the back bottom of the intake and where it goes, and where the hose that come from the oil fill goes. If you have a video of yours or a diagram you could reference me to it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hello Martin. We have talked on this before. I am replacing the short block this spring in my 04 WJ, dropped a seat in number one. Beat up the piston a bit but didn't trash it totally, but the lower end has 165,000 on it and I feel it's time for a fresh one. I put remanned heads on it however I believe they didn't address the guides as I get a oil puff on startup after sitting all night indicating bad stem seals. I currently have the solid lash adjusters and HO cams with larger injectors. My question is do you know if the late valves fit earlier heads? I am having the heads done as well and I will probably hit the ports a bit with the die grinder as I cannot leave well enough alone. I have a set of 09 cams I got out of an Aspen 4.7 and they are going as well. I would like to put the later springs and seals in as well. Thanks in advance and say hello to your Michigan transplant friend, Rick I believe is his name.
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Charlie, yes the newer valves will fit the older heads and the seals and Spring should work on all but one valve where part of the head seems to crowd the seal a little bit but I believe that could easily be fixed with a cutting head and a die grinder.

Martin, have you done valve seats yet? My 02 Limited 4.7 mildly dropped #7 intake seat, no damage. I was wondering how easy it is to drive the old ones out, along with guides? We used to do heads on 3.0 Mitsu's and other Mopar's by driving the old seats and guides out, freezing the guides and seats, heating each and driving them in by hand, hand staking the valve seats, then performing a complete valve job, grinding, lapping, new seals, mild port and polish on special cases. I was wondering if anyone can say whether its easier and cheaper to DIY the head job. have the machine shop do it, or buy 2 reman heads (I'm doing both heads to be safe).., on 4.7's we put new heads in under warranty, or when the motor ate itself, a short block and raw heads, then assembled with the old cams, rockers, new lash adjusters, basic valve job, and reassemble/reinstall. I can tell you from working in the dealer many years and owing 3 currently, 4.7's are not cheap engines to rebuild of repair, nowhere near as cheap as the LA's, Inline 6, or RB Mopar motors are/were.

@@martinbuilt I'm working on my end to address the actual problem, not just swap out existing failed heads for heads that will fail again, in some cases as soon as 500 miles with online head replacements. I'm waiting to hear from a Mopar centric machine shop experienced with the 4.7 valve seat issue, will pass on the info when I get it.. This particular shop is well know for its Mopar and Diesel head work on a national level and is close by.

It would be useful for person watching You from other country where parts are much more expensive then in US.thanks a lot for your valuable videos.

Is there any way to catch a failing valve seat, any tests you can do?
@martinbuilt

good question, I would think if the seat fell a small amount it may kick the rocker arm out. Unfortunately, there is no test that I can think of that would indicate that a valve seat is starting to fail.
