For all Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, & Mitsubishi 4.7L engines. Detailed instructions on how to upgrade to the 08 and later camshafts and while I have it apart I'll replace the valve stem seals and install the replacement HO valve springs (part number 53020749AC) with new retainers. I use a tool that I built to compress the valve spring allowing both hands to be free to remove and replace keepers, retainers, valve springs, and valve stem seals. Work performed on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The 2008 & later Camshafts had a couple different part numbers
LEFT: 53021979AA or 53021983AB
RIGHT: 53021980AA or 53021984AB
2008 Camshaft spec. Int. Duration @ .050 236 with .277 lobe lift. and Exh. duration @ .050 252 with .257 lobe lift. 110 LSA with a rocker ratio of 1.85:1 that give a valve lift of .512 intake and .475 exhaust
If you are interested in the Martinbuilt valve springs compressor I have them currently available for $86.00 with free shipping. I have made upgrades to the one you see in the video. The aluminum plate has been water jetted to precision and comes complete with a retainer cup and hardware.

I just wanted to say thank you. Your videos helped me with the rebuild of my motor. I misaligned a tooth on the cam and only found out after reassembly. Re-watching this reminded me that I could use a nylon wedge tool like you did. So I didn't have to remove the front cover again to fix my misaligned cam gear.

Hi Martin, I have a question to ask you. I'm having problem with my '05 4.7l Ram, a few months ago I was in town with my family and the a/c started blowing hot air so I stopped and put a can of freon in the system. It worked great for a while and even though it's winter, I still use the a/c mixed with the heater to control the climate. However, every time I come to a complete stop the windows fog up and it feels like we're in a sauna until I shut the a/c off or start driving again. Is that because I didn't do an evac and recharge, or is it something more serious?

This guy is inspiring. When I did my 2001 I took his advice and I freshened up my whole top end comp cam beehive valve springs. But I remove the cam first. I zip tied the camp. The timing chain and I zip tied the timing chain around the cam sprocket so I never had to take the timing chain off. Then I popped the cam off. Then I did my valve springs and the upgraded '08 rockers

Previously I would of discarded it as a waste of my time, but now I'm interested in doing a cam swap with new lash adjusters. Possibly headers as well... I still have emissions due on the 05 Dakota, so I may have to just do with new/stock manifolds and gaskets, I'm un-sure about aftermarket headers that will bolt up to the existing downpipes/catalytic convers.

Just want to emphasize the approach Martin uses to extract the rockers from under the cam. He's compressing the rocker tensioners with his approach, not the valves and valve springs. If you look at other videos, you'll see folks use a valve spring compressor, which is what I did. The problem/risk with this approach is that you could lose a valve spring retainer clip, letting the valve drop into the cylinder. Reduce your risk of this, and follow Martin's approach to just compress the tensioner. Lesson that I learned the hardway, destroying my #8 piston and passenger side head. Oh well...

Any info on if using 08 cams on a first design h.o. motor would cause clearance issues with pistons? Ive heard they are a domed piston and i may be getting a lead on an h.o. for my 02 ram. Just figured i could put the 08 cams in while its on a stand rather than tryin to do it after its in the truck. Supposedly as long as the motor came from another jtec pcm vehicle it should fire up. Id wanna get denso injectors youve talked about im sure. But spitballin at this point on makin the truck get some more pep in the step. Its already fun to drive as its got the nv3500 5 sp manual trans. But could use a few "safe upgrades" that wont dislodge valve seats and still be on pump gas. But just wondering if the increase in lift would impact a valve with a piston

Thank you, I really appreciate that. If you still have the 45RFE TCM I would swap it out for a newer one to get that extra overdrive gear. The intake and throttle body was a huge improvement for me, but some of that had to be because of the Cam and exhaust working with the intake and throttle body it all works better in combination.

@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 3 жыл бұрын
No, changing camshafts will not change the compression ratio . If you go to airram.com he does sell aftermarket pistons but you also need to purchase the matching connecting rods, That can get quite costly. If you looking for a little bit more compression you could always find yourself in H0 engine And that way you also would get a steel crankshaft.

Yes, absolutely that will bolt right in, you may want to replace the valve stem seals at the same time. Make sure you only purchase genuine Mopar cams as there are many chines knock-offs on ebay and other parts houses. If the cams look like the ones I installed and have the part numbers on the middle of the shaft that should be the ones.

Almost done changing out valve seals, springs, lash adjusters on my 168k 2003 Durango. Again thanks for the vid. Quick ? I did not use (or know to use) the little plastic valve stem sleeve that comes with the Felpro valve seals...it is supposed to protect the new seal from potential damage by the keeper grooves. In your vid, you do not use it either. I would assume you have had no issues? I dipped the seals in fresh oil before slipping onto the valve. My valves are factory original and would not appear to have any burrs... Thanks Martin! Keith

Got a couple questions for you. My 03 overland has started smoking at idle, so it’s time for seals. 1st.How powerful of a compressor would need for that process? The only time I’ve change valve seals was using the rope trick. Wasn’t fun, prefer to try the air pressure method. 2nd. How long do you think this would take with normal tools? 3rd. Would you consider renting out that valve block tool?
