@@I_am_that_guymore weight on the front tires usually leads to better steering traction in fwd cars in the snow. If your front tires have no traction fwd or rwd doesn’t make a difference only way drifting works is if you’ve got front wheel traction and rear wheel slip. Both will go into a ditch with no steering traction but the added weight on the front wheels will usually help mitigate it more than rwd cars can.

I’ve got a VW Scirocco Mk3 and it’s a great car. Its wide wheel base, low centre of gravity, and sporty suspension means it’s planted through corners. Weight transfer isn’t an issue. In fact I’ve probably oversteered with it more times than I’ve under steered. This only happens when really thrashing it in the wet, in the dry it literally hunkers down into the corners and won’t budge from its line at all. Only downside is it’s a little light on the front when accelerating and is gagging to wheel spin. But if you can master the launch just under the grip limit it’s a rocket ship that can give porches a run for their money
@det_tf2
@det_tf2 8 ай бұрын
One of the biggest issues is weight transfer. When you floor your car, the force from the acceleration is gonna transfer weight away from the front wheels, leading to slower acceleration. There's a reason no sporty FWD cars have much more than 300HP, any more power and the front wheels just lose traction

FWD can easily be set up for oversteer and prevent understeer. Stiffer suspension = less mechanical grip. Stiffer rear springs, stiffer rear sway bar, staggered wheel setup (wider in front, skinnier in back). A properly set up FWD car will oversteer more than RWD. There are still things that FWD can't do, but it can be mitigated to an extent. And of course, FWD is usually smaller and/or lighter overall.

The biggest problem with FWD is the traction issues when accelerating from a stand still. It’s not because the tires are bad or anything like that. But racing prefers AWD due to the traction, and FWD loses its advantages over RWD because the engine in a race car is more often put in the middle or rear of the car so the weight is more on the rear of the car and therefore loss of traction on the front is more common which is why in normal vehicles FWD is used more since the weight is in the front.

Fwd cars are underrated. Sure, they're a worse platform when it comes to racing but they can be enjoyable too. Just note that too powerful fwd cars will be more likely to understeer. The most fun ones to drive are small, light ones, no need to be very powerful. Those are a blast to drive through curvy roads

Had a Volvo c70 hpt as my first car. Loved it to death, factory 17” bbs 2 piece wheels, nice bit of rasp and turbo noise from the 5 banger, thought it drove great and thought people were nuts about fwd cars being bad. Then I sold it and got an e46 with twice the miles for half the price, turned out it was 10x the drivers car my beloved Volvo was, beat the piss out of it to get my moneys worth before the 200k mile bmw croaked. Been hanging it sideways near redline almost every day for 3 years now, when not in my e30. Didn’t know a thing about bmws when I got it and assumed I’d hate working on them, turns out old ones are completely intuitive and helpful to the consumer mechanic. Couldn’t bring myself to drive an awd or fwd winter even thought I bought an auto 330xi for that exact purpose. Making every single turn sideways on a 45 minute commute for 3 months of the year is some of the most fun a person can have. Give rwd a try and you might never look back

I have owned a 2009 Nissan Altima, 2 2006 Chevy cobalts, 2 2005 Nissan Sentras, a 2003 Buick century and a 2004 Buick lesabre, a 2012 ford focus, a 2006 VW Rabbit, and a 2013 ford fiesta. All front wheel drive, all easy on the bank, all held up wonderful while I owned them. I still have half of them to my name. Others were lost to accidents and trades. In the rear wheel drive category I have a 2000 Ford Mustang, a 2006 ford f150, a 2007 Chevy trailblazer (also 4wd capable) and a 2005 BMW m3, admittedly all of which were more fun to horse around with and drive around with, even in the snow and stuff but none of them have been easy on the bank, nor fuel efficient compared to other options.

I think a lot of it comes from the fact that the driving style for FWD cars is a lot different from that of RWD cars. You need to trail brake more and you need to left foot brake. They're also harder to do fun things in sometimes. You technically can't drift them but you can slide them around pretty nicely with either a Scandinavian flick or a basic hand brake pull. With that said a fun car is a fun car. There are lots of FWD cars that are fun to drive. Just like there are lots of RWD cars that suck to drive. Surprisingly enough there's more to how a car handles and performs than it's engine layout. You need to look at the vehicle as a whole.

To mitigate understeer in a front wheel drive you have to trail brake (keep the throttle open while braking).

Fwd short wheelbase cars are brilliant, Id argue due to braking effectively giving you more grip, they are better on slightly slower twisty roads. Yknow, the ones we actually like. Anyone can plant their foot and go sideways, not everyone can send a 1.1 citroen saxo down a B road faster than a beemer 😊

i think the fact that it understeers is a good thing for setting up corners and trail braking because you can let off the throttle and brake early and then use that shift in weight to turn in early and throttle through 50-70% of the corner saving even more time than AWD because there’s no engine braking the rear wheels on FWD (there’s a way around it on AWD cars but my point still stands)

I built a front wheel drive road bike (pedal bike). I know the feeling torque steering well. I also built an FWD recumbent with a moving boom and a fixed boom design. It is an interesting design to use. It takes a learning curve to use it, but it I fun. I think that once you learn the feel of a fwd car, you get used to it.

It is ALWAYS about your setup. If you’re understeering into a turn, let off the gas a bit. If that isn’t working for you, you need wider/stickier tires on the front at the very least. Sometimes drifting isn’t the fastest option. There are endless variables to this. My car is set up fairly well from the factory, I drive like a maniac on backroads and I’ve only understeered once and it was on Bridgestone winter treads

Should added how u can fwd handle better. Stiffer rear will help the back end slide out n then when u left off of throttle right b4 u turn will also kick out the rear. Then one u have the front of vehicle in the direction u want u just power out of it letting the fwd pull threw turn.

Torque steer seems to be misunderstood. It is caused by the fact that the cv axles in a fwd are not the same length, therefore the amount they twist under load is not equal.

It depends on degree and control. Oversteer can also put the car ass first into the ditch. Just like understeer can do it nose first. Choices. Which is why supercars mostly tend to be mid-engined, trying for balance. I have owned all three. The mid engine was the best handler. The front wheel drives were predictable and handled okay and predictably, and had good packaging. Good shopping/grocery getters. Like them in the snow too. Right now I drive a front wheel drive minivan. No plans to race it. Holds a lot.

The real reason to use a FWD setup is for its reliability. There are less moving parts compared to RWD or AWD meaning less points of failure. And they’re a lot simpler in nature so any repairs they need are not as expensive. Quite honestly the other setups are just if you want to have fun or are towing, but most people aren’t doing that.

if you want to be a fast driver it's important to get experience with different drivetrains and setups. I have definitely gained a lot of speed by noticing the differences from one car and the next, the difference in handling and acceleration causes you to notice things and conciously think about them when before you hadn't. Racing theory is a lot of turning the unconciously unknown into the conciously unknown, into the conciously known, into the unconciously known. in short you go from not knowing, to feeling, to thinking, to not needing to think.

If you want a good FIRST FWD race car, that is great in the corners. 2012 Mazda 3 with 2.0L skyactiv. 70/30 weight bias with 150hp. Once you stiffen the frame via strut/sway/torsion bars, it's like the car is on rails! Get an engine tune after the bolt on mods, and you have a daily driver that feels like a race car....
