The ADS-B mandate will require most airplane owners in the US to install new or upgraded avionics equipment in their airplanes. This video is a summary of how I did that recently for my Bonanza. I chose the L-3 Lynx with the active traffic option to maximize the benefits of seeing other traffic around me. JA Air in Aurora, IL, did the installation.
Come along and watch how this all unfolded, from dropping the airplane off at the shop, to picking it up and testing the installation, all the way to receiving the ADS-B rebate check from the FAA.
Edit: The touch-screen issue I talk about (12:15 into the video) turned out to be a hardware defect. L-3 replaced the unit, and the new one has been working flawlessly.

Thank you Martin for the wonderful video, including the personal touch which I really enjoyed. I was not able to earn my pilots certificate due to a spinal injury from a fall. At the time I was doing my cross country training back in '82. With the advent of Go-Pro and your editing, it has brought the cockpit back to me, and the beauty of flight above the clouds !! My favorite video..... "Low IFR in a Bonanza" Keep up the excellent work, you have a great talent, although one bit of advice for you.... If your going to include a shot of the front yard.... mow the Lawn LOL !!

Oh man, did the lawn look THAT bad? I did mow it later that morning, but needed the early morning sunlight to make the shot work. (Excuses, yes, I know...) Sorry to hear you had to stop your flying activities due to the injury. No video can completely replace the experience of actually flying, but I'm glad to hear it brings back those nice memories. All the best to you.

Hello Martin, i’m looking into installing ADSB now in my Warrior. Would you recommend the NGT 9000 after having it now for quite some time? Thanks
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe. I am still very happy with the NGT-9000. I would pick it again if I had to start over. The additional display for traffic is invaluable, even though I have a nice map display on the Avidyne IFD and also the iPad, but those usually are set to farther ranges than what is useful for traffic avoidance. I have the 9000+ model with active traffic which I like very much; if you go for the base model (9000), I strongly recommend adding the ATAS option to get the audio alerts for nearby traffic. Let me know if you have any other questions - happy to help if I can. Best regards, Martin

You are welcome, CAVOK. Is there any talk in Canada about a mandate for ADS-B, other than some of the high-altitude airspace? Every now and then I hear a rumor, but nothing confirmed...
@ripper8771
@ripper8771 6 жыл бұрын
It is funny you ask Martin because I work for Transport Canada but in a Financial role (even though my passion is aviation. The quick and simple answer is that any airspace that currently requires you to have a Mode-C transponder will require you to have ADS-B as of 2023. Also by 2023 without ADS-B you are restricted to operating below 10,000 MSL. In order to allow for flight in mountainous regions there is an exemption zone 2500AGL above 10,000 MSL to allow you to clear the mountains. It is in every Owner/Operator to be ADS-B compliant to fly in the states :) initially the deadline was 2020 but it was pushed back. The current document (see image 1.6.3) includes the current coverage. We have a long way to go! www.navcanada.ca/EN/products-and-services/Documents/AIP/Current/part_2_enr/2enr_eng_1.pdf My dream is also to own my own single piston IFR capable aircraft.
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing that - it sounds very similar to the mandate in the US, except (1) the deadline is different and (2) you Canadians did not copy the UAT mess we have here in the US with two largely incompatible flavors of ADS-B. Transport Canada - small world! In my day job, I work for Rockwell Collins, and Bombardier is my current customer. I work on the CSeries avionics program, so there's a fair amount of involvement with TCCA (indirectly for me, but I hear a lot about it).

whats better the three prop or the two prop do i0 550 fits in all bonanzas
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 5 жыл бұрын
That's almost a religious question. In general, two-blade props are faster, while three-blade props are quieter. With an IO-550, you don't get a choice in the Bonanza - it HAS to be a three-blade prop. I do not know if the IO-550 can be installed in all models of Bonanza, but I've seen V-tails, 33s and 36s with the IO-550, so at least it's pretty common. - Martin

When you have an issue with the AI and HSI/DG steam gauges, consider replacing them with Garmin G5’s, a GMU-11 magnetometer and removing the vacuum system. Outstanding combination with internal battery backups and EHSI capability.

@mannypuerta5086
@mannypuerta5086 5 жыл бұрын
Martin Pauly Take a look at the reported loss of attitude indication when the Aspen loses GPS input. Also, if the G5 AI were to fail the EHSI can be switched to an AI. Great backup option. You will also have vertical guidance on the AI and the HSI. Not sure if the Aspen will indicate two. The is a single point of failure with the Aspen, also. Lose one instrument and lose everything. A lot of redundancy with the G5 combo and they interface well with the GNS530. I also did a Flight Stream 210 that loads the 530 from ForeFlight or Garmin Pilot (no more 530 twisty/pushy). Not sure if WingX allows that option. Garmin!👍🏻

Although it is kinda admitting that your traffic spotting skills suck, having ads-b is a real turnaround from what flying was like before. Its like finding that there are suddenly a lot more aircraft in the sky than before. I typically leave the unit ranged out 12 miles when on cross country, then range in when I see multiple targets close by. I try to use the unit to improve my spotting skills, using it as a guide as to where to look for the aircraft. It is not necessary to spend a lot of money to get ads-b. A ads-b out only solution like the one that integrates with you wingtip strobes can be complemented by a portable, non-tso ads-b unit to show traffic on a tablet or other computer. It would be nice to move to %100 ads-b equipage. This is one of the most obvious safety enhancements to come along for aircraft in a long time.
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 5 жыл бұрын
You are right about how ADS-B is an eye opener in terms of how well (or poorly) "see and avoid" really works. The sky is still a big place, so the risk of a midair is very low, as shown in the accident numbers. But we don't see every nearby airplane, no matter how hard we look - that's where ADS-B or other traffic systems are a tremendous help. Best regards, Martin

Great video and excellent editing which, I am sure, is quite time-consuming. I am pulling the trigger for GTX345 next month. Hopefully Uncle Sam will still have 500 bucks for me ;-) Question: after 1.1.2020 will the Active Traffic sort of loose its appeal since mostly everyone (excluding aircraft with no electrical system, etc) will have the ADS-B out?
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Flight of Passage, and good question on what happens "after 2020". While active traffic will be less important as people install ADS-B "out", not everyone in the US will install ADS-B "out". Quite a few airplane owners will not, and accept the limited access to airspace (e.g. less than 10,000ft, no Class C/B). So especially the scenario I highlighted in the video - traffic pattern of a remote field, away from radar services - will still make sense after 2020. And if you fly abroad, to a country where ADS-B is not required, certainly ADS-B will help there.

Hi Martin Great videos when you had the Lynx installed active traffic did you also do the antenna diversity added? NGT-9000+ or NGT-9000D+ I like there unit and will be installing one in my 1959 Piper Comanche Thank You
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Curtis, I did not select the diversity option - I got the NGT-9000+. Diversity is not required for my airplane; I figured should I find after some time with the unit that the "D+" with diversity would have been good, I can add that simply by purchasing an activation key from L-3. After all, the extra antenna needed for diversity is already there, it's the directional antenna on top which is then used for the additional purpose of diversity. Having said that, so far after a bit over a year of flying with my 9000+, I have not found myself in a situation where I missed anything from the traffic picture that diversity would have added. Diversity or not, I'm sure you'll be very happy with the Lynx in your Comanche. Best regards, Martin

Nothing wrong with the 15W50 from what I can tell. However, the engine was mid-time when I bought the plane, and my mechanic advised going from one kind of oil to another. Whether that's good advice or not, my engine has been performing very well without any hiccups.

Brian, that may be something interesting in the future, but it's really on the back burner for me. I figure I'd still have to chip in somewhere around $10k for this kind of swap, which is a lot of money given that I can't fly anywhere with the Avidyne units where I can't fly today.

ADSB is required in 2019 for all aircraft
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Bernard. Are you referring to United States airspace? The ADS-B "out" mandate in the US becomes effective January 1, 2020: www.faa.gov/nextgen/programs/adsb/faq/#g9 There is no requirement to have it in 2019, though of course one can already use the benefits (traffic and weather information) today with the right equipment. Regards, Martin
@DmitriMogiliver
@DmitriMogiliver 7 жыл бұрын
we are staying away from the touch screen for this exact reason, plus we think that operating in bumpy condition would be really hard. What was your rational in paying for the ADS-B in? Tablet based solutions(Foreflight/Garmin) are evolving and progressing so fast, we think that locking into an all-in-one unit does not make sense. Why did you feel that all-in-one solution make sense?
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 7 жыл бұрын
Good questions, Dmitri. I had and still have an iPad with a EFB app in the cockpit (WingX in my case, but ForeFlight/Garmin Pilot etc. would be similar). I used to feed ADS-B "in" from a portable receiver (SkyRadar) into it. And it was great, most of the time. In terms of "best bang for the buck", I think this was the sweet spot. But I wanted more, knowing full well it would cost me. Three things in particular: First, I have witnessed cases a few times over the years where the iPad was showing wrong information - weather that was stale (as in an hour old) or not shown at all, things like that. A certified product goes through a lot more care and testing in development, is modified/updated much less often, and reduces the number of those kinds of "surprise moments". Second, for traffic I absolutely wanted to have aural callouts, and reliable ones. I know some of the EFB apps try and you can hook them up to the audio panel, but again, this is something that works great 90% of the time and I wanted something close to 100%. Third, as I explained in the video, I wanted active traffic in addition to ADS-B "in" - and there is no iPad or other portable solution for that. It took a lot more money to get all that, and I'm not saying everyone needs it or should aim for it, but that was my approach. Regarding the touch screen and turbulence, I've been wondering about it, but it's not been an issue. In turbulence, it helps to rest some fingers on the bezel or somewhere else around the touch screen to get firm control over your touch finger. And unlike the iPad, the Lynx has a resistive touch screen which requires a little bit of push (beyond just barely touching) before anything is activated, which helps a lot in turbulence. Happy flying!

thanks, Martin. Nice wright up. I suppose you started with more than one device candidate and you chose Lynx, who was your runner up?
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 7 жыл бұрын
My second choice would have been the Garmin GTX 345. Good transponder with better integration with my GNS530/GNS430 units than the Lynx. The downsides are it doesn't support WingX (my EFB app), no display on the transponder itself, and it doesn't have active traffic built in. Active traffic can be added through another Garmin product, but that total solution would have been more expensive than the Lynx.
