Solo 40 km backpack hike to Howse pass in Banff Park, Alberta. This is an abandoned fur trading route. I show tricks for making life easy in the wilderness. The trail was in such bad shape, with so much deadfall, that I had to abandon my attempt to reach the pass. Check out Brian Patton's blog on this trail at: canadianrockiestrailguide.com/... He's one of the co-authors of my favorite hiking book "The Canadian Rockies Trail Guide".
Here's my map of this trail on CalTopo: caltopo.com/m/40QB
Best part of making these video (other than the hike) is matching music. For this video I used:
1:50 Instrumental version of Madonna's "Amazing" found on KZfaq.
7:20 Instrumental version of the Tragically Hip's "Wheat King" found on KZfaq. The Hip are an amazing Canadian band from Ontario.
15:10 Instrumental version of Collective Soul's "Shine". Done by Nick Scott. He's on KZfaq as Ambonick1 ( / ambonick1 )
19:20 Instrumental version of U2's "Bad". Great song by an even greater band.

I love your style of presentation - very relaxed, down to earth. I just started watching your video for the first time and I feel like I've known you a long time. Nothing fancy, just the basics. Good pacing and reflections on your observations. Surprising how engrossing and entertaining the basics can be!

Thanks. I'm definitely more relaxed when I'm hiking alone. When I'm hiking with family and friends I worry more. I also find a lot of people are too busy "hiking somewhere" and don't take the time to appreciate the moment. I never figured out why this video became so popular. It's not the one I consider my best. These days I'm experimenting with a GoPro. I'm not as satisfied with my recent videos as I am with those from a few years back. I have a long solo hike in a few weeks. Perhaps I'll get back in the zone then. Thanks for watching.

Yes I couldn't have put it better myself. Very comfortable watching. Some of te trail is not unlike some of our Scottish ones but we are not often trying to find a route through trees -those are normally well used and visible even if parially blocked by fallen trees. What wears us out on the hills is where there is no track but LOTS of heather, bracken ferns, tussocky grass and marsh all of which wear out your legs and sap energy so fast you wouldn't believe.

Sir I want to thank you for the beautiful video, I lost My left leg 13 years back and then the use of the right leg around 10 years back.I don't say this for you to feel sorry for me. I say it to let you know what and why I am not outdoors with you or on My own. Any way the things that I love are for the most part outdoors.Your video took me back to the days I had in the wilderness as a younger man. I cherished those days and the memories I have are priceless.But some of the color to those memories had faded a bit. You video restored the color and sounds of mountain streams and the smell of clean after a summer rain.Again I thank you for asking me along. It was great to share a cup by the fire and to sleep like the dead after hiking in with40 or 50 pounds on your back.I hope to share many more adventures in the near future. Peace and Love fill your days.

Steven Bell i am going to say thanks to you because between the many disabled people i work for, older people who cant hike so far anymore, all kinds of people / say the same thing, that these videos take people who cant get there to the places they really want to be myself included. Most people wont go to the extra effort of getting an account and posting a comment like this- most of my clients would have a really hard time posting a comment at all. moving a mouse is hard enough for many quadriplegics.. Your comment represents so many people i cant even guess at the numbers, thanks for saying what so many others would like to

Vinyl Therapy & Audio There are plenty of guys that have found freedom and the great outdoors that may be disabled. Have you looked at the ATV? There is nothing wrong with them and they are street legal. You can even get them modified to meet your need. Take a look at Polaris. Also, google disabled atv riders.

Timothy Thomas The pants are knock-off Mammuts that I bought overseas in Nepal. Never been able to find them on line. They look good, but they have many problems. Too warm in summer. Trap sweat. Burn easily from sparks. I prefer a good pair of quick-dry pants from NorthFace of Mountain Hardware. I especially like the ones that zip apart and turn into shorts.

I’ve been organizing my meals individually for years. It has many advantages. First of all it really makes me plan in advance. Secondly it forces me to ration, which is especially important on long trips where weight and space are big considerations. I only eat the day’s rations. Thirdly it keeps things organized on the trail. I don’t have to think about what I want to eat. I make sure I vary each meal slightly to keep things interesting. I’m planning a 12-day solo hike this summer, and I’ll do a couple of videos leading up to it. I’ll do one video just on meal planning.

Matthew Hickey I use Coghlan's "Sierra Folding Saw". Easy to find at most camping stores. Costs less than $15 and weighs next to nothing. Don't push too hard on it, 'cus you can break the blade, especially in wet wood. I have one in every pack. I've cut 8" trees with it to make benches (when I'm really desperate).
@Matt-ik7dh
@Matt-ik7dh 9 жыл бұрын
Cool, thanks it looked like you were cutting through bread haha. You had a great setup where you stayed. Right on the creek, with a bench and looked like nice ground to sleep.
@ericpmoss
@ericpmoss 9 жыл бұрын
Matthew Hickey Another option if you can't find that brand is a Felco F600 folding saw. It's a bit pricier, but the blade cross section is triangular -- thickest at the teeth, thinnest at the spine, so it doesn't get bound up in thicker wood. They are pretty great for fast sawing.

Marty - Thanks so much for making such enjoyable, informative videos about your experiences, as well as tips for surviving and thriving in the backcountry. They've changed my life! I live near and love the High Uintas Wilderness in Utah. Thanks in large part to your instruction and passion I've increased my trip time in the backcountry, fine-tuned my survival skills, gained much-needed confidence during my trips, and, my overall enjoyment on the trail has skyrocketed. My grandmother spent many of her summers on solo trips backpacking through Jasper and Banff, and now, as a way to honor her and her love of nature, I am planning trips of my own to these incredible wilderness areas. Thank you!!! - Amber, Utah

It's been such a great experience for me, with daily feedback from so many people. I'm lucky because 99% of the comments are very positive. I don'' seem to attract so-called Trolls. If you ever want ideas for Alberta just drop me a note. The parks are amazing. By the way, I worked south of Roosevelt, UT, in 1998 for a small company called Eco-Shale. Very different countryside, but still amazing. Are you near there? Thanks for watching my videos and I'll do my best to continue to inspire.

I usually camp close to small streams so I can have drinking and cooking water. I don't like being close to a big stream because the noise makes it difficult to hear animals that might be approaching. Altering a site is not necessary. - Protect riparian areas by camping at least 200 feet from lakes and streams. - Deposit solid human waste in catholes dug 6 to 8 inches deep, at least 200 feet from water, camp and trails. One thing - cut halfway and step and snap the rest of the way - saves valuable energy. Loved your vid BTW Thanks for your trouble in filming in the midsts of your fun.

A super nice video. I strongly suggest you drop the music. It destroys the authenticity of the experience of nature's sounds. The sound of walking on the trail, the wind, the water, the birds, the fire, the cooking, the chopping, the dragging, the set up of camp. Taciturnity and the sounds of nature are music enough for any video. Think of David Attenborough or the old Sunday Morning nature episodes.

Thanks for sharing your trip, but you are dead wrong about not needing to hang your food, or that there aren't any bears around, or that the smell of smoke does anything to mask the scent of your food from a bear. They can smell the toothpaste on your teeth. There are incidents with bears in Banff all the time, many of them Grizzlies, often attacking hikers in the middle of the day. Be smart and hang your food and always cook at least 100 feet downwind from your camp and hang your bag 15 feet above the gound.
@Martyupnorth
@Martyupnorth 6 жыл бұрын
Push your argument to its logical conclusion. Since a bear has such an amazing sense of smell, what is it likely to investigate? The sent of toothpaste (to use your example) or the sent of a dead elk carcass on the avalanche slope? Does shampoo, processed cheese or dehydrated tomato soup smell like food to a bear, or is it just a curious smell? Let's assume for a moment that the bear decides to investigate the curious smells that come from my camp site. Will it be drawn to what we call food any ore than other smells. My camp smells like resin from all the plastics. It smells like my sweat. It smells like my food. It has the odor of my fuel, my insect repellent, the lithium from my cell phone battery, rubber from my boot soles, smoke, and all the other natural smells. Stop scaring people with bear stories, and maybe question what you've been taught. The idea of hanging your food sounds good to the average city slicker, but it's a false sense of security. I've been hiking and living in the wilderness for over 35 years. If you watch all my videos you'll see that I do a lot of risk management when I hike. Bears are a low risk as far as I'm concerned. I welcome your concern. but I don't believe I'm "dead wrong".

Predicatable... the Bear Police immediately pounce. I suspect Marty knows more about bears than the Bear Police.

Billder Inbaja Obviously not if he doesn’t think he needs to hang his food or better yet, use a bear cannister. Only an idiot who has never stopped at a ranger station much less spent time in the back country would think bear bags are for “city slickers” lmfao!

Beautiful, just beautiful. I am in New Brunswick, but I visited Banff for the first time two summers ago. The mountains are beautiful, however I didn't get the opportunity to get into the wilderness. Here in NB, the gov't imposes camp fire bans from early spring to late fall. I love a small campfire, but I can only have them when there's snow on the ground. Thanks for the video, Marty. I really enjoyed it.

Very inspiring video. I love going out by myself and enjoying what nature has to offer. The meal organization is key. Great point to bring up. There's nothing better than waking up to those views and the sound of water running. For the record, I never felt you were pissed at the lack of trail or the weather. Not sure where some of the other posters got that from. Keep on doing exactly what you do. There's always people that will offer a negative opinion just because they can. I hope you get to that pass in the future. Best of luck.

I lived in the Rockies as a teenager with my family for two years. We lived in Colorado on the tippy top of a mountain at least 30 minutes from the nearest small town I can think of. More like 2 hours to reach a real community with more than one store in town. My time there wasn't the greatest due to circumstances BUT I have never felt more at home than in the wilderness offered there. The beautiful sky, the sun, the cool weather, the crisp fresh air, the fir trees, the beautiful wildlife, the fresh water!! I'd love to go back and I'm truly jealous of you right now. Very nice video

My goodness, the delicious view of the lofty mountains from behind and the sounds of the unwavering yet wistful river makes for the setting of a Robert Frost poem. The Rocky Mountains is officially on my wish list (or rather dream list) of places to visit before I die. I will get there....

If the Oracle of the Matrix was watching this video Marty, she would tell you: You got the gift. I have watched maybe 10 other videos before I came back to yours. I never finish watching them. It's either the music, or the product sales pitches or the characters that make me switch off, but everything you do in these videos makes a man want to go out there and go hiking. And as always: excellent choice of music.

I've actually met some cool people through this. My next step is to do more collaborations. Cheers.

Thanks Tony. I still enjoy this video as well. This summer I did a lot of hikes with other KZfaqrs, and I found that it changed my filming style in a way that I didn't like. This past weekend I went out with my buddy Evan, and I was conscious of that. The result is a video I uploaded just this morning that has the same "feel" as some of my older videos. I also did a survey this summer, and its clear that folks prefer my solo video. I'll do my best to get out alone as much as I used to. Thanks for watching. Comments like your always make me happy. Cheers from Alberta.

Thanks for the hike and great panoramics. I would die if I tried that. We used to hike a little in our younger days. I've only been to Banff once and I wished I had known how incredible it was. I did get an awesome picture of some elk crossing a stream just outside of Banff near the highway. May many more gifts of nature be sent your way.

I look at life as it's not the destination, but how we enjoy the journey toward it. I've had to turn back at time's, but never felt dejected. A little pissed maybe.😁 This is the first of your video's I've watched. Truly enjoyed it. Slow and steady, relaxing, peaceful presentation. What immediately stood out was, unlike nearly ever video of this type, you don't carry on about the latest, greatest, brand-naming the most expensive gear. Anyway, keep doing what your doing, just the way you're doing it. Be safe. Subscribed from Colorado, US.
