Marvel Creators Attack Fans As Comic Shops Close

Marvel and DC comics employees continue to attack potential paying comic shop customers at the worst possible time. As if the shops didn't have enough to deal with. They can't go to work, they can't receive product. Meanwhile Marvel, DC, and Diamond have yet to respond with a real plan. The clock is ticking on this industry, but you wouldn't know that based on the behavior of some of the 'creatives" in the industry. Is this how Comic Book retailing ends?

A man named Teddy Roosevelt once took a bullet to the chest. He shrugged it of and held a 90 minute long speech before going to the hospital. Comic book creators takes criticism, breaks down and cries.

From my experience every company do that. From books to video games. TV shows are at the pedestal there by the rate of bullshit they trying to do. And the worst thing is that people are get they back to this shit. Just look at the new DW series, it's complete bullshit and any long lasting fan can see that. How they managed to do even worst than Moffat did is beyond me, but they managed to completely destroy the characters and made up some crazy ass bullshit as story plot for the whole series(like rewrite the plot of timelords in the way that make you think "WTF are you doing"). And the majority of fans just gulping that crazy stuff like candies It's all goes to the fans, if the people will like that stuff or blindly accept any crap they shit out from they asshole it will continue until it's completely dead as the franchise

@@damianstarks3338 It's very simple. If comic book artists want the industry to survive, they need to do the following: 1) Stop insulting your fans 2) Listen to your actual fans and do what they are asking 3) Look back at what made comic books great and do that. 4) Leave all the politics, preaching, and identity nonsense out. 5) Don't radically change existing characters. Create new ones. And don't demean and ruin existing characters to make yours seem better. People have been shouting this at the industry for years, but they ignored it all. I can't feel sorry for people who do the opposite of what they should be doing, and fail.

Star Wars became a cultural icon in the 70's because George Lucas told a story while everyone else pursued an agenda. Somebody will figure that out and put together something costing maybe 10's of thousands of dollars, make millions, develop a massive following while everyone else engages in a circle jerk and squanders all their resources. @@nervclax7458 Merchandising was always more profitable than just selling the original media itself. Thinking that relying on a single product like comic books is how you aren't going to "pay the bills forever". One of the reasons LCS locations have gotten into the start of the downturn in the first place is their insistence on relying on a single product line and not diversifying their inventory. Does that excuse all of the shitty stuff by DC/Marvel/Diamond during the health crisis? No, but there's a reason why every other retail industry has diversified beyond just selling a single product type as if it will never have a downturn in sales.

Remember when everyone watched LOST? Or when everyone watched GOT? It seems like it was ten years ago another age. I remember the thrill of walking into my comic shops and seeing what books have arrived in my pull list. Then there was a shift, and I started dropping books and adding new titles, hoping to rekindle the enthusiasm. I later became apathetic and finally resentful, dropping $20.00 every week. I kept it for another year or two, dropping books and not committing to new titles to replace the dropped comics. Then I started to skip the weekly visits, and when I did turn up to buy my pulled books, I felt resentful as if I was buying rent for something I didn't own. Once I read every page from the box giving the year and address of the publisher to Stan's Soapbox and letter page as the dessert. Even the yellow box that appeared once or twice a year detailing the copies printed of a specific issue reading it as if it was the stats on the back of a Baseball Card. Now I was taking my reduced stack of comics home and flipping through the pages, skipping panels, and more than once losing interest tossing the book into the read later pile, (Which I never did bother too.) I kept my relationship with the Comic Shop as long as I could until one day after paying for five comics at $3.99 each, I told the owner I wanted to cancel some books. Okay! Which ones? All of them, I said. I'll just start picking off the racks from now on! The Marvel comics I loved and grew up with passed away years ago. Just as many love affairs end, it was me, not you. But that was a lie this time it was you that changed.

This...is exactly what I've been trying to say to people. It just isn't the same. They're entirely too expensive and the CONSTANT renumbering is what also killed it for me. I was, I'm almost ashamed to say, a $200-a-month collector before the New 52 kicked off and wiped some of my excitement away. Then Daredevil renumbered for the 3rd time in 3 years and I said screw it. Once Walking Dead ended I went down to one monthly series. The love just isn't there. The last great era for me, someone who got into the game in the mid-80's, was the DC and Marvel of the early to mid 2000's. Rucka on WW and Adv of Supes, Johns on Flash, Bendis on Daredevil, Vertigo's final flashes of greatness and the original vision for Ultimate Marvel...there has been nothing like it since. DC rebooted and killed their continuity and, while I'm all for diversity and inclusion, Marvel made Iron Man into Ri-Ri, Spidey into Miles, Ms. Marvel into Kamala, Hulk into Amadeus, Thor into Jane, Cap into Sam Wilson, Daredevil into a bad guy, Captain Marvel into Carol, etc. It was too much too fast. And both companies are guilty of the CONSTANT event series and tie-in mentality, repeated minis and cancellations. And turning every character into their big-screen counterpart at the launch of every movie, I really hated that. Then they bring back the old characters and numbering...only to make it a stunt and change everything anyway. Death means absolutely ZERO any more. I feel like a crotchety old man but I just miss the old days. There's no excitement any more and even less appreciation from the companies.

As someone who only reads a few comics, I don't know who ANY of these pros are, I read mostly the old stuff, and I laugh when I see things that are geared towards people who don't buy comics. It's a story. So it should have good writing, compelling themes and great morals. They act as if they create a story with a 'problematic' situation in it, that will alienate people to not read it. No. People have been learning from and reading books for centuries with tough subject matter. You are pushing a narrative within the media you chose to work in for an audience that don't buy said media. That would be like Stephen King moving into the torrid romance genre but writing about how the study man who saves the abused housewife suddenly died from ingesting rainwater that grew mind control spores within his brain. Yes, that sounds interesting to people who want those stories, but the audience in the grocery store female porn novel camp wouldn't buy that book, because it's not what they want. Would you then blame the neglected housewives for his book not selling? There should be different Genres and while the industry should be for everyone ( Anyone can write or draw ), marketing individual stories to everyone is not the way to let the industry thrive. This is the very reason we have children's comics. It's why there are action, adventure ones, detective ones, funny ones. Don't push your political shit so blatantly into a work of art. The reason people read comics is for escapism, they are trying to get away from this shit with their favorite characters and you're ruining it.

Comic book writers, and artists. Please keep your personal political, and ideological BS, out of our comic books. We buy and read these books, to escape all the crap, were inundated with, on a daily basis for awhile. It is to a degree, for we the fans, our safespaces. So quit trying to burst your way, into our safespace, and attempting to force feed it to us, there as well. Your double standards are showing! You wouldn't allow that, as acceptable behavior, if the roles were reversed, so why should we accept it now, from you? The answer to your problem is simple really. Put away your ego, realize your job, is dependent upon the very people your alienating, and give them what they want. Because obviously, what your doing, isn't working. Your only killing the industry that supports you. I mean, you can continue to do what your doing, but I promise, you won't get the Brie Larson treatment, of Marvel rushing in, to buy up your garbage product, and propping up your career. There have been far better, writers and artists, that they haven't done that for. I doubt they'll start a new trend with you! So when you get the pencils down memo, you'll understand why!

If anyone watched SF Debris's "History of comic books" and saw how bad things were for writers then, just imagine how bad it is now. Openly attacking fans is likely a sign of frustration at a VERY toxic work environment, run by tin hat dictators who have no clue what they're doing, and have nobody to keep them in check.

@@capeed5292 Some of us do. Some of us also like to argue points into the ground with them. I can remember a few hotly contested debates on CBR between Kurt Busiek and some of the then regulars (Before the great purge, when most regs were swept aside in favor of a new kinder, friendlier face for the mainstream push). Some were civil enough, like "Is Superman specifically weak to magic". Others not so much, like the storm over Supermans fight with Thor. The thing of it is, comic writing is a pretty cruel career at the best of time. Typical profit driven execs creating toxic environments because they never heard of a carrot, and think sticks solve all problems. And we are far from the best of times. Back in the 80's and 90's, we had psychopaths. They've since been replaced by Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. Most people who have jobs know I speak truth.

preach it! giving the middle finger to the fans that made a title successful by calling them bigots and trying to expand the tent for people who don't care (it's not just comic books) then blaming anything and everything besides themselves when it sucks and there are poor sales and a backlash- don't ever reward that behavior!

Kevin Smith's reaction in the beginning made my heart dropped like a ton of bricks. He looked horrified to hear that announcement because his own shop might go out of business. Despite the "PRO'S" being toxic as usual on social media, I really don't want to see talented writers and artists go into unemployment but more importantly I don't want to see more shops closing it's doors for good. Once this Pandemic is over I really hope there's a few still standing and comic lovers can still get there book and collectibles. So let's try to stay optimistic and hope good things come by even though right now is a dark time. We can survive this fellow nerds. As for Marvel, DC, and Diamond Publishing.....Like Hibbs said, "I going REMEMBER who stood by (image, Boom!, Dynamite, hopefully Dark Horse) and REMEMBER who didn't."

What fascinates me is how little they care. Even in the good old days you were permanently on the brink as a creator of any kind. The prevailing sentiment was one of irrational fear of whatever you were making failing because fans didn't care for it. That could potentially ruin your career. And vice versa. If you happened to find yourself making a hit your career could blossom unexpectedly. Most creators who did this then found that they couldn't reproduce the success, because it was so chaotic and complicated to make it that they couldn't always work out precisely why it was a hit. The rest of their lives were spent chasing the old success, usually in vain. Fast forward to now where you have creators not even trying and then hurling abuse at dissatisfied customers before making what the customer was originally complaining about worse on purpose. Had you done this in the 90s you would first of all have been fired rather immediately. But whatever you made would forever have been a complete, automatic failure and you would be out of the industry for good. Yet now there is no negative reaction from above at all. It just tells us that it is all deliberate and that the only goal is to destroy. Evidently we're being phased out here, not just our stories. This is not how you would behave if you were expecting there to be customers around in the future whose business you would depend on. Getting a real Twelve Moneys vibe these days, not gonna lie...
