Marvel DESTROYED the Comic Shop | Can COMICS Survive?

Can Marvel Comics survive with comic shops closing across the country? Almost a month in to this crisis in multiple comic shops and Marvel, their main source of income, has yet to present a real plan. Adding to the worries of shops owners who fear the worst. Abandonment. In the meantime the creatives that helped crippled this industry are up to their same old tricks. The former Marvel editor and current Valiant editor has called American comic fans "the worst." When will reality sink in? At this point it doesn't matter? It's too late.

one comparison is autoracing drivers. On top series, they are paid on the tens of millions and still take a few hours per weekend just to sign autographs. And furthermore, bar one exception I'm aware of, they barely make any political statements or anything that could be seem as judgemental against their customers.

If a restaurant is failing, it’s most likely a problem with the food and/or the service. Marvel has been serving up shit soup with shit attitude, what did they expect.
@DeaconG1959
@DeaconG1959 4 жыл бұрын
The truth is that if a restaurant can get to 18 months, that's what will kill it from that point on. Most don't get to 18 months because they don't have the financial reserves to weather the building up of their clientele. Marvel reminds me of a restaurant in my neck of the woods that was a renowned seafood diner for 20 years despite the fact it was basically a hole in the wall, but it was a damn good hole in the wall that no one had a problem waiting two hours to get into. When they decided to expand, they dragged their feet on the construction, then hired a bunch of people who just got released from prison to wait tables while they cheapened the hell out of the food to the point where it was barely edible. They shut down a year later...and everyone in the county shook their heads. They had the clientele and word-of-mouth for two decades, and they urinated it away in...18 months.

I worked at a comic store for 13 years in another life. When I left I had debt, moved somewhere that didn't have comic stores and focused on getting my financials back in shape. Comics and collectibles were the first thing I dropped and never went back to it. This was from a time before comics went bad. Combine the lockdown with all the job losses and it's likely a lot of people will have to do what I did and concentrate on more important things. It's just mind-blowing why all these mentally ill people were allowed to take the reins of the industry and use it for their own social and political grandstanding instead of maintaining the tradition of creativity and great storytelling. At least that attitude is alive and well in manga.

Get the PDF file, print it out, buy some dice and you can get hundreds of hours of entertainment for a $40 dollar investment. The sad truth is that the Comic book Producers sold out the Buyers in exchange for "woke" movie tickets. Believing that they had out grown the Base, and that they didn't need the middle men who sold their product, and built their buyer base. "to go on to an all online environment" That make NO SENSE when you do the research. Online purchases of ANYTHING -- music, movies, ebooks-- make NOWHERE NEAR as much as physical purposes. The music industry is mostly online purchases (in the West) at this point and it's a FRACTION as big as it was even in the 1990s and early 2000s. They made at least 5 times as much on records (CDs, tapes, and vinyl back in the day) as they are now. That industry is a shell of what it was when it was the major entertainment sector. The thing about digital posting is that no anti-piracy protocol works. They've all been cracked. The one thing posting things online does is enable the pirates to work that much faster at spreading literally millions of copies of anything online.

1. Sounds like these various editors and "comics experts" have never been to a big -con, places where most of the floor space is given over to folks who have little or nothing to do with the major and semi-major comic book companies. Even SDCC, as big as it is only has a relatively small total exhibit hall area devoted to Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Image, etc. and almost no actual comic book sellers. There is quite a bit of space devoted to video games, independent artists and writers, books, and so forth. 2. I hope all these editors and so called "experts" know how to code. 3. A lot of folks have forgotten a basic lesson, "It's not about what you like it's about what the customer likes."

How does someone like Heather who looks like she is barely out of diapers become senior editor of a comic publisher. I used to own a comic shop years ago, and grew up on comics. I'm sure I could do a better job than her as editor, she doesn't have enough life experience to fill my pinky finger. I do remember though that after the comic crash in the 90's because of death of superman, variant covers for everything, and speculator's that many of the shops where I lived survived because the diversified into other collectables other than comics, and did more online business, they did not depend on foot traffic in store or comics alone to pay their bills. Just a thought for the retailers out there struggling right now.

I stopped caring about comics when they stopped caring about the fans. Too many activists have replaced the industry legends that made comics that 20-40 minute escapism from our day to day. At least Stan Lee passed before he had to watch his life's work die a slow and miserable death at the hands of blue-haired, blue checkmarked, proper pronouned, progressive, comic book activists that think thier opinion is canon and anyone who disagrees is a Naazi istaphobe.

Spawn only got one movie because Todd McFarlane hasn't gotten any offers that he felt did the character justice. This is a terrific video. Really good synopsis of the situation. OMG with editors like Heather Antos the creative side is in serious trouble. To be honest as I grew older I switched more and more to digital comics (only so much storage space right?) - I don't feel bad about that but I have friends who continue to collect print - which for sure is now an afterthought and consequently puts the comic store owners in serious trouble. This is tough to hear for the community. Hopefully we see a turnaround. In the meantime great reporting on the situation - you totally deserve to grow as a channel when we consider what the access media feeds us. Top job.

So one day some other dude read the article and was like “yea why can’t Spider-Man be black?” And read all the racist reasons why he couldn’t. He was like “nah, dumb reasons” and created Miles Morales. That in turn, created Into the SpiderVerse, the best Spider-Man movie to date.

"Comic professionals aren't customer service representatives". You don't have to be in a customer facing role to treat customers with respect (or at the very least, not insult them). Every employee of a company is an ambassador for that company and can damage the reputation of the company if they treat people outside the company badly (especially customers). This tweet smacks of entitlement and condescension - and is ironically unprofessional.

My local store switched its focus to gaming years ago. Card games, board games, miniatures wargames, etc. They still sell comics but it’s not their focus anymore. They had more shelf space for Manga than new comic books last time I was there, and their old comics section usually was covered by a big sheet of plywood so the employees could play M:tG or Warhammer On top of it while still keeping an eye on the front of the store. I imagine they could dump comics altogether if they needed to.

Short answer: The comic industry won't survive much longer. Long answer: As long as "professionals" like her, like Dana Schwartz (not exactly in the industry, but represents Marvel), and others keep bashing the paying customers, the paying customers will speak with their wallets. We always have, and that will continue well into the era beyond [Redacted Name]. I'll weep for the years where comics were great, but I'll laugh with open loudness should the Big Two, Valiant, and any other company that openly attacks their paying customers fall are killed off by their corporate overlords because of terrible sales numbers. Still sucks for comic shop owners and I hope the ones that are still around can recover.

Just a disgusting bunch of activists with questionable talent. Since that day, I've saved over $3000. Now the industry is just a stinking corpse. The creators killed comics. Coronavirus is more like the undertaker. I feel sorry for the shops, but hopefully they can transition to MTG, board games, manga, anime, etc. (And manga has nothing to do with American comics. These companies need to quit looking to its success as if its their own.)

I got out of comic books in the late 80's because I saw the direction comics were going. It was all collectors mania. Just like Baseball Cards, it wasn't sustainable. Then the bubble burst, and it's been limping forth ever since. The sad thing is there is some very talented individuals out there (Writers and artists). But they want to go for the easy money. And they try to create artificial events and reboots, etc. to attract readers. TV and movies are trying the same. Instead of stand alone movies and tv shows. Everything has to have some underlying story line. Ok once in a while, but not ok long term. We're in an era where computers and art have no limits. But the creativity and entertainment, and good stories are all gone. It's just profit, profit, profit. Even music is losing its soul. It's sad to see.

I grew up reading my dads silver age (and later era Golden age) comics, and grew up with comics as part of my life. Sadly as I aged, comics became less a staple in my life (but would still be purchased/read whenever I found an interesting one) Now in my 40s, seeing that the local stores, which I infrequently frequent, are all about to disappear, without the juggernauts that make these formerly great reads, helping in the slightest...makes me glad I drifted away from what was such an important part of my life. I guess I will go re-read some older comics I have here at home and reminisce about the “better than this days”

Going digital for monthly issues and focusing on printing trades and hardcovers would be a step in the right direction, but I dont know how that would effect the brick and mortar stores. And something really needs to be done about diamond, theyve got the publishers and stores alike in a stranglehold.

I have to say that before the pandemic, my local store said that after early March books came in he was not going to order new comics, only sell old books. My orders were always one off from Image, or short series books with a few on going series in there. When he said that, it was disappointing that would not be able to get the new books I wanted but I said what a lot of people probably are. It was fun, I can always get the trades later and didn't seek out to get the new books I was actually looking forward to.

Comic shops are destroyed for many reasons but one is that comics are not collectable any more. You can buy a new comic #1-30 and wait 25 years, they will not have any value at all. Not 1 cent more than when you bought them 25 years earlier and the exact same comics will still be for sale for 1.50$ brand new. Comics used to be collectable and that is gone.

People will be in finacial straights for some time to come and can easily see them not going back. Add in this new form of agenda story telling and there could be very few buyers left. My buying was in the late 90s and these new style of writing makes me glad i don't collect anymore. I feel bad for many comic shops, especially ones who care about the industry and see whats happening. I moved to where i am in 93, i had access to three comic shops, one i could walk too and now, before this current event, they are gone. This being the death of many more is sad, but not really surprising to those who watched from afar. I wish i had the money to buy/invest in the indegogo comic books, because those seem like the stuff i used to love.
