You left out the most important part of Adam Velaryon's story. After escaping the gallows in Kings Landing on on Seasmoke, he went to the country side. In an effort to prove his loyalty to The Blacks he raised a small army himself and attacked The Greens at Tumbleton, striking probably the biggest blow to the already ailing Greens, taking two dragons with him and avenging the betrayal of the turncoat dragonseeds. He died there and his headstone read one word, "Loyal."

There is no evidence that Edward I enacted or enforced jus prima nocta nor that he ever encouraged his men to abuse Scottish women on their wedding nights (abuse could happen on any day). There is some evidence that lords would accept a bride as a bribe to avoid marriage taxes or such. Medieval records didn't really mention prima nocta with the exception of noting who abolished it like Malcolm III who supposedly abolished it in Scotland in the 11th century, although prima nocta was referred to in stories to show how either the villain was bad for enforcing it or the hero was good for defying it.

it was often used by conquerers to "sow the seed of their people" and has also been used to make the conquered people "their people." the english lords used it from time to time when they conquered lands. If I remember correctly Mary Boleyn was a victim or "first night" and gave birth the Henry the 8th's only son but he died at a young age. I'm not sure if that is true historically or not though so please don't quote me on it.
@catkin1671
@catkin1671 Жыл бұрын
@@silvermoon9186 I mean, abuse of women was common and the common modern understanding of consent was quite different to the ancient understanding at least in literature. The Ancient Greek stock pose potters used to indicate marriage was the same as the one for kidnapping for example. It was common for invaders to ‘marry’ women from the country they invaded and it is true that women didn’t have the right to say no in many of those instances. But the ancient literature almost always framed the idea of taking the innocence of another man’s bride as generally bad and shocking. As for Mary, while Henry was a guest at her first wedding and there were rumours of an affair and possibly illegitimate children, there is no way he demanded her first night on the basis of prima nocta. She was nobility and they generally were less likely to put up with that kind of behaviour than the serfs, although even the serfs were prone to revolt if the lords got too callous with their power (see Pilgrimage of Grace). We know that it was considered barbaric by then because just a generation later, Shakespeare used it in Henry VI to make Cade’s rebellion look like the bad guys. Also, Henry acknowledged 3 sons: Henry with Catherine of Aragon (died in infancy), Henry FitzRoy with his mistress Elizabeth Blount and King Edward with Jane Seymour who reigned for 6 years before he died at the age of 15.

This is not a Westerosi phenomenon. George RR Martin got the idea from the ancient Jus Primae Noctis, which was practiced for centuries in Western and Eastern Europe, the middle east, and many other countries, where lords, kings, and land barons claimed the right of the first night, and in many cases held the woman captive until she was pregnant. then she would be shoved back to her husband. Although abolished centuries ago, the practice continued in some eastern regions.

I mean, they don’t have many friends.. family is the closest thing to them. My point is It has nothing to do with their continued control of the dragons….If it did and that was something they truly feared could change, then EVERY Targaryen would have married within the family….which didn’t happen. Just Ask yourself this… How did all the Targaryen’s (besides Aegon and his two sisters/wives who left BEFORE the doom) die burning to death in the doom during old Valeria if they were immune????? It’s so crazy to me though that you watch a tv show and suddenly think you’re educated on every fact about it…. You couldn’t be more wrong. They didn’t control dragons with their blood 🤣 dragonlords controlled their dragons differed from culture to culture. Some suggest that they used magic and blood SACRIFICE, whereas others say they were taught by ancient people from Asshai. But yes magic comes out of the air, as they have to be TAUGHT lol. If it was a blood thing like you’re saying then ONLY Targaryens would process the skill of magic….. which ofc isn’t true. The first night based off of Prima Noctis is actually very difficult to find any historical precedence. It was most likely a right a noble had but rarely used, as your people will rebel and kill you if you were taking the new brides to bed every new wedding. Not saying it didn't happen I'm sure power trip noble used it, but if you abuse it you would cause trouble for yourself. Plus you are a lord in medieval times you like the hot fishing girl, stable girl, farmer's daughter whatever. You can take her without any consequence really technically the people are your subjects, if you want her you can just send for her or have her brought to you. You don't need some legal standing or grounds. You are the law really and what you say goes. It's fucking terrible but that is the reality of the situation. However to my knowledge, there's no historical case we can look to and when it's used in moves it's wrong, it's a lazy way to demonise nobles plus in Braveheart, it just makes an already criminally historically inaccurate film sickening for the sake of shock value.

Velayrion has targaryen blood and when a targaryen is married off. They had already conquered dragons and had picked a few eggs when they would have children. Both dragon seeds are everywhere and they could of mingled. Including the mother lying or didn't know who the father was. So it could be any of them or even any dragon seed bloodlines which the mother could of lied who the father was. It could be anything since the author never answers most of plot holes but gives more questions, easter eggs and little clues. My mother’s ancestry is strongly influenced with Scottish and Irish blood. My ancestors on my father’s side going back a long way, were Welsh. Home of the dragons 🐉. The Welsh flag 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 bearing the Red Dragon, representing their biggest victory against the Romans. Our house Coat of Arms being that of a Lion and Raven. The past is something we learn from. In essence, to never commit such atrocities again. What was done to the Welsh, the Scottish and the Irish was horrific. No person should have to go through the trauma of being imprisoned and raped on their wedding night. No husband should have to endure that either. Learning about our ancestry is yes interesting. You speak of yours, as if it’s something to be proud of. Well, I’m afraid it’s not. Besides, your ancestors hosts were no better for allowing it. They were not “True knights”. Any true knight, would never do such a thing. The French, showing the very best,of true chivalry.
