For decades, the survival horror genre has been a mainstay in the video game business. “Resident Evil” and “Dead Space” are two franchises that have chilled gamers to the bone and caused them plenty of restless nights. “Silent Hill”, however, is the one series that stands out as the most disturbing and gruesome of them all. “Silent Hill” contains some of the most terrifying animals you'll ever encounter. They're literally beings out of your nightmares come true, which fits in nicely with how much of the game's storyline is based on guilt and fury, regardless of the title. All of the creatures and bosses in that universe have a deeper meaning, and some of them are even gods. It's why the series is so well-made, and why many of the characters are so well-known even among those who haven't played the games.
The first game in this Konami series was released for the original PlayStation in 1999. It irrevocably altered the world of horror video games because the protagonist wasn't an excellent fighter, he was just a regular guy and each creature was more terrifying than usual. Even the bravest people would be terrified by some of the things you'd encounter. With that in mind, we've compiled a list of the thirty most horrifying Silent Hill monsters.

@Revy sexual needs are among one of the main and most basic ones we can have. It's right there with sleeping and eating. And it's actually important to humanize caretakers of disabled/terminally-ill people. They're seen as heroes or noble servants but they are humans and deserve their needs met. Another topic is sexual frustration - it's actually very damaging to both men and women, also: can cause depression. James did a very bad thing but his motives were justifiable.

Amazing video! I was always fascinated with the monsters of Silent Hill. If I may add some info about the monsters: - It is true that Pyramid Head appearance makes 100% sense in Silent Hill 2, it can be theorized that Pyramid Head in the film was created by Alessa as an executioner of the cult - he was meant to punish them for what they did to Alessa in the agonizing way and in the original script Anna told Rose and Cybil about him. He also might symbolize Alessa's father - she never knew who her father was and his helmet might symbolize his anonymity but also a father figure who would protect her from harm. - The reasons why Asphyxia have catterpillar body is because Nora Holloway adored reading Alice In Wonderland and Catterpillar was her favorite character - but even though her body is sexualized her hands are covering her breasts as she died as a teenager. And Alex killed her by forcing her to breath which is fatal to her, that's why she has hands covering her mouth. Her death is a total opposite of how Nora died. Her name also refers to killing somebody via asphyxiation - just like Nora died. - As of God’s appearance and just like you said, God looks like this because of how Claudia perceived God. Claudia was also the one who made Alessa saint. - Twin Victims are sometimes called Victim 07+08 and are the only Walter's victims that were fused together into one monster instead of immortal Ghosts mostly because they were killed together at the same time so they are forced to be together for eternity - as twin brother Billy and twin sister Miriam. - Even if Robbie is just a mascot in Silent Hill 3 he is always there… like he’s watching Heather throughout her journey in Lakeside Amusement Park. And in one instance she mentions that those dead bodies of Robbie reek really bad. - And as for the nurses you forgot about Cedar Grove Sanitarium :) - the Faceless Nurses also roam the corridors of this facility. - Scarlet resembles a giant doll because Scarlet as a little girl adored dolls and her father bought her as many dolls as possible to give her a happy yet short life. He even described her hands as "pure as porcelain". And even her name is an allussion of how she died - she died by mutilation and there was a lot of spilled blood during her death... - Mary’s face (according to James in novelization) resembles Holy Mary for James. And interesting fact that Maria has a tattoo of butterfly which is a symbol of rebirth while Mary spits moths - the symbol of death. - The Grey Children in film also symbolize Alessa’s bullies from her school but unlike their game counterparts they don’t seem to be harmful at all. When the one approaches Rose it starts burning from inside (alluding to Alessa’s burning) and starts screaming in pain and reaches hands to Rose just like a child reaches its hands to a mother for comfort. That Grey Children wanted comfort and when Rose started screaming and running away they became more aggressive. Also - if the children that bullied Alessa were trapped in Fog World as Grey Children they were forced to live agonizing pain for 30 years and they should be around 40s in Real World. And don’t forget about Stalkers - the invisible versions of Grey Children found in Nowhere :) - Mannequins also symbolize James’ sexual frustration because they are only pair of feminine legs. - Also - as for Insane Cancer it might represent Heather’s feelings of her own not yet known pregancny. Many women think that because of pregnancy they will become disgusting and ugly and they will never look the same as before. And it might allude to god as a cancer for the real world. - It is also interesting how we can never see how Helen/Momma looked as a human. We know how Richard looked like but not Helen. I think it’s because that Alessa didn’t had enough power to show us and Travis how his mother looked like. Travis repressed the memories of his parents. And the gas she uses is an allusion to how she tried to kill herself and Travis via gas from the oven. - Another interesting theory about Siam alludes to Alex’s parents marriage as it was his father Adam who made all decisions making him the leader and ruler and his mother, Lillian was just agreeing with everything he said and was more or less “powerless” or unwilling to do anything against her husband will. - The reason why Amnion resembles a spider is a reference to how Joshua loved insects - especially spiders. Amnion even dies like spider - flipping on her back and curling her legs. And also the way her head extends like a telescope alludes to a photography - Josh also loved taking photos of everything and everyone in Shepherd’s Glen. - I also found an interesting theory that Screamers could be Carol’s Pendelton manifestation and her screams could symbolize her grief and screaming at him for letting Charlie die at the hands of Napier. In idle state Screamers often put their fists to their faces as if they are crying and make a cradle out of their hands as if they were putting a baby to sleep.

I remember when I was 7-8 years old, me and my brother (5-6 yo) had just received our first Playstation as a christmas gift. My aunt's husband asked if he could borrow it for a week or two and give it to a friend that could chip it so that he could download and burn whatever games we would like for free. We said yes (ofc), and when we got it back, we received about 30 different games with it. One of them was the original Silent Hill game (as well as Resident Evil 3: Nemesis)! We used to play it when we knew our mother couldn't see what we where playing, but one time she happened to walk in on us playing it, and oh boy... our aunt's husband received a mighty scolding for giving us games like that!

Unfortunately you didn't go into the proper backstories of some of these monsters, such as Asphyxia. You say the hands cover the nakedness then you say they're groping, which is two different things, and she was a child while she died so why would she be GROPING herself? You also didn't mention how she looks like a caterpillar because her favourite book as a child was Alice in wonderland

I often wonder what level of traumatised do you need to be to actually see anything in Silent Hill. Looking at the monsters that exist they tend to range from guilt over deaths, ligering trauma over violent assaults or something linked to prolonged suffering... Does this mean that someone who has mild guilt over being nasty to their mother-in-law at the family picnic will get an angry yelling lady? Or do you just get to watch everyone else scream and flail? What would an adult deviant art page look like or would Silent Hill scoff at trying to manifest posters of smut? Silent hill feels like some kind of twisted version of having your soul judged for sin when you die. Nasty people fight their way through hell, victims seem to have a habit in the series of hiding and surviving- possibly even escaping once they have processed their trauma and found some bravery and innocent people just go on a sightseeing tour and pop out the other side.

I found the Dolls from SH Downpour fairly disturbing... They looked like mannequins but could deploy ghostly shadows that were impossible to see if you didn't have the uv flashlight. Only by their moaning and sighing could you tell they were there The Wheelman boss was another disturbing one, since he wasn't even Murphy's monster. He was more Anne's, a manifestation of her father's deterioration after a corrupt prison guard beat him to within an inch of his life and left him in a vegetative state.

26:23 When I was playing Silent Hill 3 and came across the Insane Cancer. I noticed when you put some distance between you and them, they would lean forward a little bit before they charged at you. By doing so would move their center of gravity forward allowing them to gain the momentum to charge at you.

Pyramid Head is based on how the executioners of Silent Hill used to dress up like before beheading inmates. Three years before the game, he and Mary went to the Silent Hill Historical Society, and when James saw the portrait titled "Misty day, remains of the Judgment". The visage in the paintings would later align with James' feelings of guilt, inspiring Pyramid Head's physical appearance. Takayoshi Sato, the character designer of Silent Hill 2 said that "the place Silent Hill is used to be the place of execution before the American Civil War, away from cities. Heinous criminals were transferred to that place and got brutally executed. Thus all village people are executioners or family of executioners. Executioners needed to wear a mask or triangular helmet at the event so they do not directly witness their spear when it was piercing flesh. Time has passed, but only the memory of execution lingered." Sato referred to Pyramid Head as a "distorted memory" of the executioners. And this also explains why Pyramid Head also appeared in Silent Hill Homecoming, it is not just a monster manifested from James' guilt, the creature's appearance has historical ties to the town of Silent Hill, and could also be a manifestation of Alex's desire for revenge or judgment on his parents.

The one that creeped me out the most was the Stalker from SH1. First time I came in contact with one was in Nowhere. I was backed into a corner with the chainsaw and since they are almost invisible I couldn't see them, especially the way the camera angle was. When all of a sudden it walked right into the chainsaw and scared the hell out of me! 😂

Personally, I LOVE the monster designs in Homecoming, but I HATE actual combat. I find the story alright, the areas workable, and the characters are okay. But, I do prefer the other two SHs I've played over it (SH2 and SH3), even if they were the HD remakes-

IIRC, the Grey Children were replaced in some versions because of censorship concerns about depicting violence to/from children. In some countries video games were legally classified as "children's toys" at the time (might still be, I'm not sure) which means you can run into trouble when you want to depict certain topics. Rule of Rose ran into the same problem because of its depictions of extreme bullying in a boarding school.
