Arguably the most powerful song Marvin Gaye has ever recorded. He prophesizes his bout with one of the demons that would eventually bring forth his demise. I remember my parents playing his "What's Going On" album when i was young, and his songs have always stuck with me. Just thought I'd share it. Enjoy!

Not exactly true. Just because it didn't win a Grammy (which is admittedly an all time oversight), doesn't mean it wasn't well received. WGO, was both an instant commercial and critical success, as its revered today.

MSL525 You're right actually, I think I got WGO mixed up with another album. I do know that Berry Gordy didn't like it and didn't want Gaye to proceed with the album; that's probably why I got a bit confused. Either way it's one of the greatest albums of all time ^^

I remember when I was about 14 years old visiting my uncle in rural (Mangweni) Nkomazi (South Africa). He played Marvin Gaye's What's Going on album: and ever since then, I have been stuck and obsessed with Gaye's voice and everything about him. I collected every album of his. Musical genius that will never be replicated. He was way ahead of his time. RIP Prince of Motown.

When I was ten years old my family lived at 1240 Woodycrest ave. in the Bronx. My mom use to play this entire album over and over again. However, when i'd hear this song a melancholy type of feeling surrounded me. I loved the song but I did not understand the meaning or what Marvin was singing about until I became a grown man and a dope fiend myself. That is when I felt the pain in this man's voice crying over his addiction and honestly sharing it with us. I went to the place where danger awiats! Chills!!!! Sing Marvin. I love you brother!!!!

If you've ever lost a loved one to a failed battle with drug addiction, this song pierces your soul. It's the more morose companion piece to Curtis Mayfield's hard hitting "Freddie's Dead," and reflective "Eddie, You Should Know Better." If you're not familiar with them, do yourself a favor and check those out.

Yep - yep - yep. So sad yet executed beautifully. And, the saddest part is that Marvin Gaye is dead. Still - this song gives us a glimpse into his soul - his suffering. He invited us in - shared his inner-most torments through this song. Given the fact that he is dead, we can really see he really was a tormented soul - the walking dead.

You've right. This is chronicled in the book written by his brother, who came back from Vietnam and shared all of his experiences with Marvin. Those conversations led to, arguably, the greatest concept album ever. This song, in my opinion, is the most powerful on the album. The phrasing, delivery, and music are all so haunting. If you close your eyes, you can see the junkie..."I go to the place where danger awaits me, and it's bound to forsake me...self-destruction's in my hand! Oh Lord"

Clear and simple, this song, as well as the rest of What's Goin' On, was Marvin's account of a Vietnam vets' experience coming back to the "world", and trying to adjust and adapt to a world (or himself) that has drastically changed. Anyone (no, everyone) who has heard "What's Goin' On" has some connection, direct or indirect, to the astonishing testament that Marvin left to the world. Almost 40 years after its release,it still resonates the most accurate indictment of our world's condition.

Marvin was a gifted man from the day he was born with a father that chose not to celebrate his gift but to become jealous of his gift and decided to kill his dreams by any means necessary to the point of death. But his father's hate for his son came from the pain he received from his dad. Parents carry a great deal of power over their children. How we raise, love, and treat them will affect them for the rest of their lives.

It was a long time before I could hear this song without crying. It is pure genius the way Marvin could actually make you feel his pain. I have always LOVED Marvin Gaye. It's amazing how he could make great music from events in his life and make you feel what he was going through!!.
