No copyright infringement intended. One of Motown's and Marvin Gaye's truly magnificent recordings. And Marvin didn't do it alone. The Funk Brothers including James Jamerson, the Andantes, the Detroit Symphony strings, and producer Norman Whitfield, who co-wrote this with Barrett Strong...I had to stretch this one to show off many of the elements.

I love this extended version. It's great, especially the placement of the girls voices. The girls act as "Grapevine". Right from the start they wisper, spread the news, their voices sneer. Later when the cockold gets his part, they keep in the background, show pity and tell it on. Finally they sing in standard rhyme, put the story aside that has happend a million times before, and that will happen millions of times again. Among these millions, Marvin Gaye told his one as one of the best ever.

Modern day Mozart,Debussey.....orchestrations,tempo,lyrics,harmonies...the total package. I never noticed how much the violins had to play in this little epic. The Detroit Symphony is on point and really selling the mood. Thanks for this tutorial...as a 13 year old kid from Detroit,,,we never truly "listened" to the mastery of all the many elements of this old chestnut. Thank you....Motown was truly ahead of its' time...KUDOS!!

I remember being mad at Marvin for dropping this song a couple of weeks after Gladys Knight and the Pips version was already heading for #1 till Marvin came and knocked it out the park. As a kid and a dancer I refuse to like Marvin’s version. Hmmm it lasted a about a couple of months before I came around and forgave him. 😂😂😂🤣🤣😭😭❤️😍

The Funk Brothers were awesome. The only Band that was as funky would be The James Brown, 16 piece orchestra in its heydays. James Brown played the organ too. Very well.

I first heard the original on American forces network radio in the 60s,I could not believe what i was hearing it was 18 months before it was then released in Britain,used to drive the record shops nuts for requests to track this down.This is an Epic rework loved every second of it. thanx Dj XPAT

My only problem with Motown is the songs were too short! Your work is masterful, and what I hear in my head when I wonder, "What if they made an extended version on the B side?"! Add one subscriber, right here. Keep em coming!

All the songs were short back then. If they were longer than three minutes they called the extended play and put them on an LP or 33 and 1/3.
