"What's Going On" doesn't exist without "What's Happening Brother", if you ask me. It's two faces of the same coin. One of the most stunning albums ever made, this song brings me to tears every time.

Rolling Stone magazine voted this the greatest album in the history of the world and I agree with them 💯💯💯💯, and I also agree with you about What's Happening Brother, I think that it's an extension of What's Going On.... And I listen to the album if not every day I listen to it almost everyday....

Smokey Robinson was absolutely right when he said this album was prophecy 💯 . Can't find no work can't find no job my friend money is tighter than ever hit me really hard. I'm from 🇿🇦 and unemployment for the youth is really a struggle here in our country.

I’m unemployed and have been for a bit myself. Hope things get better but not looking good at all unfortunately with still almost 1 mil (or 700,000-800,000 for the duration of the 2 some odd years of this crises and counting, you do the numbers ) per week.. Effecting good portion of working adult population (much worse then the 30 some odd % of the Great Depression). 6-7% unemployment rate can’t be accurate since the way they count the ‘data’ has changed.. They used to include people once they ran out of funds if still unemployed but now if you not collecting your weekly benefits and run out your no longer counted.. So it’s not what it seems at all.

Word. That's the core of the song..making that connection. His brother Freddie was in Vietnam. Imagine making it out, getting 'back to the world' so you could see your folks again. Speaks volumes about humanity, the good and the bad. That's what makes this album so wonderful, it's more than just Marvin singing.

This visual is so touching to me. To me it represents today’s black man “brother” hurt and stressed(cigarette) from everything going on around the world e.g Racism, gas prices, inflation, crime, etc. He’s on the phone giving an update to Marvin letting him know what’s been happening and not really much has changed 😔. R.i.p Prophet Marvin 🙏🏾

same, I got into soul & jazz when I was like 14 or 15 (twice that age now tho lol). I think a lot of ppl in that age bracket are generally just not aware of the sociopolitical realities of the 60s/70s (which is fair enough really right?) but yeah I also prefer the whole "love is the answer" zeitgeist of that era over the soulless stuff that's popular nowadays

They’re messages all in this song. This song & Inner City blues even hit different in 2024. It’s like not too much has changed today. It was track 2 on the album. WGO (the single) had been out for months before the album dropped. This song took a serious theme, a conversation between two brothers about coming home from the war, and turned it into a finger popping masterpiece. James Jamerson is the star of this song. That bass is the slickest piece of bass work ever recorded.

Hey baby, what'cha know good I'm just gettin' back, but you knew I would War is hell, when will it end? When will people start gettin' together again? Are things really gettin' better, like the newspaper said? What else is new my friend? Besides what I read Can't find no work, can't find no job, my friend Money is tighter than it's ever been Say, man, I just don't understand What's going on across this land Ah, what's happening, brother? Ay, what's happening? What's happening my man? Woo Are they still gettin' down where we used to go and dance? Will our ball club win the pennant? Do you think they have a chance? And tell me, friend, how in the world have you been? Tell me what's out and I want to know what's in What's the deal man, what's happening What's happening, brother? What's happening, brother? Ah, what's happening, brother? What's happening my man? Woo, ah, what's happening, brother? Say it, man, woo What's happening, brother? What's been shaking up and down the line? It's because of that bass line Marvin actually went out to all the bars to try to find James Jamerson to put this album together that night they panned out what's going on that night and what's happening Brother was a variation on that by Jameson who he then sculpted the variation around Marvins voice really listen to the Baseline that's what makes the song. It's like the bass is singing a duet with him, basically Jamerson is the brother.
