I sit down with Mary Harrington to talk about the Cyborg Theocracy.
PART TWO can now be viewed here - www.michaelnayna.com/p/mary-h...
Accompanying written piece for part one here - www.michaelnayna.com/p/mary-h...
I'm attempting to build a fully independent model for my films to circumvent the established industry. I want to leverage my solo production set-up into high-production-value feature films.
Substack is my preferred method for support where subs can gain access to exclusive scenes and articles. You can also support this work via other platforms - linktr.ee/mikenayna .
Special thanks to Petr Luksan for H.R. Giger's Art in Motion (2010).

Sorry to comment twice, but we have NOBODY in opposition to those ideologies of concern who actually understands them. That’s been a problem for a while. Typically when someone is deep enough in the critical theory direction to be able to truly understand it, they’ve become anointed and have far too much to lose if they were even capable of stepping back and criticizing the “critics of everything”. I think this woman is likely to be VERY important and I’m going to look into her work as soon as I send this comment.

Michael, this is absolutely astonishing. I've been wondering what you'd been up to lately. You'd been on my radar since your magnificent work on the Grievance Studies affair & the Evergreen Meltdown. Mary Harrington just blew me away. What a deep, insightful, resolute mind. She might be the missing intellectual link within this conundrum. James Lindsay bacame the historian; Peter looks at young minds; Michael fights on the christian front; Heather & Bret hold the evolutionary biology flank. But Mary attacks the issue head on, weaving all aspects of technocratic fallacy & social constructivism into a tight bundle of contradictions that she then proceeds to elegantly untangle within minutes. What a magnificent person. Thank you both.

I am very excited about this video. I’m not aware of her or any of her work but her ideas resonate tremendously with me and I think she’s brought us many steps closer to finding an accurate narrative of making sense of the current state of affairs and our trajectory. Although I’m not exactly thrilled to have a new, well articulated, highly probable apocalyptic concern lol This is probably the one that should be of the most concern because of the likelihood that these trends converging is very likely to be some kind of sci-fi Divine Comedy with some in Paradiso and others in the Inferno. When it comes to racial politics, we can also see the lack of empathy based on the internal dignity of each individual being replaced by intersectional check boxes being the only road to having value and empathy in your direction, and that’s not to say anything done for any groups will actually result in a better life because it’s all so reductionist and ironically, essentialist! You are given value by this or that arbitrary label you might fall under regardless of ANY personal experience of suffering at the hands of society at large. Maybe the most intersectional will be like a Brahman priestly caste of the cyborg theocracy, and white cis hetero males will be the untouchables 😂……or rather, 😢

With this series, Mike, I feel like an injection of Marshall McLuhan's work might help to contextualize and taxonomize the relationship between the human mammal and its technology. So frequently we objectify technology and endow it with self-contained divine status (even when we are critical of it), when in fact it only amounts to extensions of our own minds and bodies. McLuhan is masterful at properly organizing all of its aspects in a way that seeks to restore human consciousness and awareness. While in his own day his words were enigmatic and opaque to most audiences, as we fall deeper into the digital age, in which platforms possess the ability to introduce entirely new atmospheres, and as the psychedelic experience becomes a more commonly understood phenomena, his once-confusing language becomes increasingly understandable. Concerning your thought that "as you're moving towards technology, being the ground of everything, you're moving aware from human nature," from McLuhan's perspective that is patently mistaken. Language itself is technology, as are every tool that begins with the opposable thumb, and we are a speaking, making species at our core. Human Nature is a fundamentally technological affair, and to suggest otherwise gives way to some sort of noble savage conception of man, (pleas pardon my anachronism) or to suggest some kind of Luddism as corrective. I propose it would be more appropriate, following Heidegger, to discuss the Cult of Technology, or the Mass Market of Industrial Technology. The last thing we should entertain is the rejection of all human art and artifice, as if our creative nature, itself, were the cause of impending dystopia and technocratic hive-ification. The conversation requires vastly more nuance and, as I began, a more helpful and forgiving taxonomy than what we've got here. Kudos to the two of you for engaging the subject as you do. It is perfectly appropriate to be framing the matter as a Cyborg Theocracy.

True Christian theology is actually not a belief system at all, nor is it dependent on belief. It is, more accurately, an acceptance that becomes a lived experience which proves itself accurate over and over to the one experiencing it. Interestingly, is detectable by those around such a person even if the observer is not living the experience directly his or her self. The mental process of mere belief is inadequate for such profound experiences. There is a huge difference between believing and acceptance, which becomes knowing. With knowing there is actual, concrete proof. This is the essence of spiritual science, which, like any science, requires rigor, honesty, and deep commitment, with virtue at its center. What it yields is priceless.

I'd like to see Mary in discussion with Donna Harraway. Not everyone has such a view of post/transhumanism. Most are against using the term 'natural' in terms of using it in opposition of alterity, such as gay people and other groups that get described as 'un-natural', used in place of 'ungodly' these days.

Saying you 'do' something based on materiality or technological mindset is an error. You can look at things the way you wish, even if you are in a corporation, or impacted by technology, I'd describe that more as materialism or idolatry. Not a new problem, very unsexy, but also, these problems have been around, the 'new' technology doesn't change us, just what we can do and/or how we do it.
@nakedandalive
@nakedandalive 3 ай бұрын
Thank you for the interview and "undressing" of this pernicious worldview. It's basically materialism, through and through - the belief that the world is a machine, mechanical and we can take it apart bit by bit and reassemble it, even man, as a soulless, unembodied thing. The theocracy overlay really adds a wrinkle - that there is a concerted, explicit moral overclass guiding this, preaching this, enforcing this church of materialism.

There’s this idea that transhumanists are woke. But those are different things. Although there may be intersections, as there are between woke people and Christians, for example. The fact is that transhumanists tend to be extremely objective and to guided themselves by empirical evidence. And woke people tend to value subjectivity and narratives.
@mcgheebentle1958
@mcgheebentle1958 Жыл бұрын
Not quite. Did you listen to the whole video? This point was very clearly addressed. The question that BOTH transhumanists and the “woke” would answer in the same way is “Do human beings have a certain nature?” Both of these groups of people stem from a Rousseau-esque “blank slate” position. A great example of that shows how transhumanism is a conclusion of wokism is obviously gender theory and transgender ideology. The central tenant of this ideology is that “queering” oneself is to simultaneously transcend the physical limits placed on one’s body, and to reject societally imposed binaries. These two objectives are one and the same to the gender activist. Millions (this is not an exaggeration) of words both written in academic papers and spoken in lectures and essays have been used to make this point. This is a big deal to the gender activist. I don’t see how you can say that transhumanism and wokism are two distinct ideologies. You are technically right, there does certainly exist an intersection of the woke and the transhumanists. But this intersection looks almost entirely like two circles sitting on top of one another. Those that lie outside of the intersection are in the minority, and increasingly so.

TechnoPhilia. I read the now seminal (and ultimately dystopian) duo of trans humanism treatises , Frank J. Tipler's 'The Physics Of Immortality' and Ray Kurzweil's 'The Age Of Spiritual Machines' in the mid to late 1990s, while in college. At first read seemed like sci fi utopia, but w/ a few years later, on second read both ring ultimately like Dystopian Ego trips...a hodge hodge of wishful thinking, techno phillia, misguided humano centrism and quite frankly some philosophically and conceptually misconceptions impossibilites. And mind you, Kurzweil's book has a timeline at eh end , purporting to 'predict' when certain landmark innovations will, occur, and needless to say, it's already completely behind schedule.
