This is the original 1964 LP version, which I treasure. The restored/remastered Disney CD just lazily copies the motion picture soundtrack to the Opening Credits -- that version is much shorter and doesn't have the melancholy feel and warmth that this version has. Thank you for posting your copy.

No, this is soundtrack was the european version, made in 1965. Mary Poppins had a long release period. In Some countries the movie was released after the Sound of Music. It was running in cinema for over. 2 years!

@@bartvanos1466 Sorry, Bart, but this longer overture was on ALL versions of the soundtrack upon initial release, including in the United States. It is indeed found on the U.S. version of the soundtrack LP released in 1964. I know because I own that soundtrack -- both the stereo and mono editions.

When I hear this version of the overture, the original trailer appears in my head-complete with text proclaiming "full stereophonic sound" and "the magic of Technicolor"! I wasn't born yet when _Mary Poppins_ premiered; I just remember seeing the trailer as a bonus feature on the 40th anniversary DVD.

My first exposure to the trailer was seeing it on KZfaq on a video of the closing trailers of the 1982 Rental VHS of "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" [1977]. The very last trailer on the tape. After that giant crescendo at the end of this track and at the end of the tape itself, the tape was over.

There’s always a diffrence between a release date and the year that it was actually popular or in cinema. Not only in the sixties, even these days! (Most of the time it’s released in the previous year). For example The Sound of music 1965 was in cinema for over 3 years! And the album was nr. 1 in 1966 and in 1967, even more popular than the Beatles sg. Pepper l.b., hard to imagine, but it was,

When they re-mastered the soundtrack, they probably chose the shorter overture because the extra bit is mainly a representation of "Jolly Holiday." On cd, the actual "Jolly Holiday" track ended up far longer as it includes the dance section between Bert and Mary's verses. But in losing this ending, they also lose the majestic finish, which is a shame. As a fan of the old LP, I appreciate both versions, and actually prefer this one.

Trust the Germans to give us true stereo. I have an LP of the Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour" pressed in Germany with the original stereo recording, not the simulated stereo we got here in the states.

I have to say that this version also has the more interesting artwork that the original, I've seen a few different artworks for this album but this is my personal favourite.

+Aeonterbor I have the 1973 pressing (USA, Buena Vista Records) which has similar artwork of Mary and Bert and the marquee font for the film logo as opposed to the original pressing which just has the two characters' faces with the logo above them

The original Soundtrack LP was released on Disney's Buena Vista record label. They were pressed and issued on stereo or mono disks. A lot of albums back in the 50s and 60s were released as stereo or mono and both were available in record stores. Stereo LP's went for about $4.99 and the Monaural counterparts went for $3.99.

I really wish that when they remastered the soundtrack they included the COMPLETE movie overture as it's heard here, that was only released on the original soundtrack LP. It gives the whole overture a unified sense as a complete orchestral work that befits being a stand-alone work apart from the essentially "utilitarian" purpose it serves in the opening as the main titles and credits roll by and fades into the first scene of the movie.
