For those unfamiliar with the "Holy Ground", you might not realize that this song is not about a poor love-sick sailor bidding farewell to his true love, and the holy ground is not precisely Ireland. In the old sailing ship days there was a southern seaport in Ireland name Queenstown (now renamed Cobh, County Cork). In Queenstown was a notorious red-light district called...you guessed it, "The Holy Ground". It is to that famous old entity and the soiled doves abiding therein to which the song refers. Now that's a sailor song.

The Holy ground a great old clancy brothers song Shouting all the way through it not meant to be song like that
@Ogdenvillain7 ай бұрын
To be fair now, the songs are to be sung however whoever is singing them wants to sing them. The tradition thrives and survives on the old tunes finding new voices and new ears to keep them alive. A generation might not ever find the Clancy Brothers version, except through hearing the Wallopers first. Even if it's not for you, it's good for the lineage and legacy of these songs and the artists who've performed them, not to mention the Wallopers also cherry picking songs like Wexford by the Pecker Dunne purely because of a love of his work and a desire to shine more light on his name and his art. That's not to be sniffed at just because a song doesn't sound like it used to. Go to a live show, see how the lads and Róisín have brought these tunes to a wide, diverse audience who are so passionate about seeing this music coming back to the fore. John Francis Flynn, Lankum, Øxn and more, all these artists are taking tunes from the tradition and morphing them into something beautiful, fresh and new. There's nought worse than being boring, and stuff staying the same across decades and generations and never adapting with people and time would be awful boring.
