As a registered nurse and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, I think biting is one of the most serious problem behaviors that I can think of. Biting will get kids thrown out of preschool and daycare. It will get them into restrictive placements, like older kids who bite will sometimes not be able to continue on in public school. They'll have to go to autism school where professionals wear bite guards. When I think of biting, it is just something that we have to tackle as early as possible.
Human bites are actually even more serious than animal bites because we have more bacteria in our mouth. If you get a bite as a professional or even as a parent or a sibling, it could lead to the need to see a doctor, get blood tests, potentially go on antibiotics, and you might need stitches. I've even seen biting where it caused ligament damage and nerve damage.
I don't mean to scare you, but biting is very serious. And even parents who think that the child is just being playful and biting when they get excited versus aggressive bites, biting will still get you thrown out of really important places.
So biting should not be something dismissed as a part of autism. It's not. Biting can be an indication that kids can't communicate well, and we need to teach them to communicate. If children with autism also have Hepatitis B or AIDS, for instance, that can be even more dangerous. So we should tackle that quicker than most other behaviors that I can think of.

These situations need to be addressed, so people should not be concerned more so on being scared but knowing the truth behind the child's behavior. So, this is a very good video to watch.

I don't know I think the biting may be a part of the chewing as stimming, I think when they are comfortable and soothing themselves when using the biting as a playful thing. when used as a response to their anger and to hurt someone or defend themselves., it's when they feel threatened and or stressed about their environment. so I think its' important to address the oral issue first and then review it with the child when they feel the anger and the urge to hurt people either by hitting or scratching how they can deal with their feelings and self regulate by resisting the urge to bite. -like the resist the urge to throw something or hit someone. Yes look at the whole picture.

I do wish there were more straightforward quick solutions but handling our kids aggressive behaviors requires a bit more work. I have a 7 year old daughter that has Not been diagnosed with Autism but shares a lot of characteristics. She’s a big time biter. I’ve learned her triggers and try my best to prevent the escalation that gets her there. A lot of times it’s still unavoidable (my daughter bites when upset or when she feels playful, happy and excited) so I try to do my best to find things that soothe her and quickly calm down the instinct to bite. I give her space so I can protect myself and have tried giving her teething toys (not her favorite) however she really loves fabric so I’ve started giving her old socks or shirts to chew on when she’s feeling extra “bitey”. All in all I think prevention is key but let’s be honest...it can’t always be prevented. I believe the next best thing is learning to work With them and not against their instinct. We all know our child best and we can try to set up a space for them that’s most comforting/soothing. Sometimes there’s just going to be bad moments..and to that I say, you’re not alone. It’s tough. Just know there’s a lot of us out there and we need to be compassionate to ourselves as parents.

My child is 5 years old, autistic, non verbal, his just started learning words but he can't communicate to u to let you know verbally what's wrong. My problem is when he's in pain, or really hungry he lashes out by scratching, pinching, biting to the point where he's peeled off my skinz I have claw marks, looks like freddie kruger went to town on me. He doesn't do it to his dad, he will aim his frustration at me. What can I do, I have tried telling him no, n Holding his hands to stop scratching, biting me, but he's strong for his age, n I don't want to hurt him, when I'm restraining him, I'm scared he's going to get hurt. I let him know, that it's not good, it's bad, n say no, he gets that. I understand he's in pain or suffering, but even when he's not, he's still doing it, what can i do to stop him, I really need ur help, plz help me, I would really appreciate it. Thanks

Thank you mum.I work with a 20 yrs + person with autism but in his case he suddenly attacks to bite or try to attack with some sort of pressure like pouncing on you.He firsr bit my right arm then on the next attack which was more of a pounce,he tried to bite my right arm.The observation i made was he suddenly refuses to engage in an activity and attempts to bite.so am wondering if this" no biting approach can work on him because once he bites you and runs off,he actually makes an attempt to bite any other person he sees until he is calm or kept in a sensor room. Please what other strategy can be applied.looking forward to hearing from you soon.Thank you

The first place to start is a medical assessment and then to plan how you can prevent the behavior.

Hi!! I work with triplets ( two identical girls and a boy) they are 26 months old and the boy has always been sort of behind the girls, tooth girls started talking waaaay before than the boy did, he also pushes his jaw about and he has probably about 100 words while the girls have 1000 more, and the ones he says he is always pushing his jaw out but we have already checked and there is nothing wrong with his jaw, bite ir teeth … he also walked way later than the girls and he can’t jump yet and he runs but he keeps twisting his legs and he obviously falls down, we have speech and development specialists that see him regularly but they haven’t been really helpful, he has the worst tantrums, he bites himself in his hands an arms all the time, he has no problem solving the way the girls do, he just gets frustrated at the first try and melts down, he also shows signs of a very serious OCD , with basically everything, if the bed is crooked or if his shirt is nor straight …. He is also incredibly into different textures and the couple of things that calm him down is to just get under a lot of heavy sort of pillows, help please?? We have no idea what to do…. One development lady said to buy him a straight jacket and just put him in it when a tantrum ….

As the video says, you want to first look at a dental appointment and a medical evaluation. Look at what is triggering the tantrums and if you were given 1000 dollars to even go an hour without any issues, what would you have to do and you may need to start there! I do have online courses that can help. Check out a free workshop here www.marybarbera.com/workshops

What if it is biting that happens during a meltdown? Saying "no" is a trigger and makes her more upset. If you try to remove yourself and the child just keeps coming after you, trying to bite.

I babysat a 6 year old girl who had Autism and she was the same way, she didn't like the word "No," so instead of saying no we told her "maybe later" and she liked that much better. There were no melt downs and she let go whatever it was she was wanting with no complaints .

What if the biting is out of frustration? My 3 year old is starting to bite all the time, at home to his twin sister, at daycare and now at his special ed preschool he just got into! I'm worried he is going to be kicked out soon if we don't get control of it. But it happens so fast, as soon as someone takes his toy or makes him upset he immediately bites hard. He says words, but is not understandable, so he can't communicate when he is uspet yet. Help!

he likely needs someone at daycare or preschool right beside him to help him in those situations. for special ed preschool , you should be able to advocate for more supports in his IEP .

I'm curious, is there any helpful literature on autism in teens and them biting themself. As I read it could be boredom, overstimulation, or frustration but what could be the best way to battle it

The idea is preventing the behavior before it happens. We can achieve this by taking data on what happens directly before the behavior, while the behavior is occurring, and what happens directly after. You can learn more about taking data on problem behaviors in my online courses (in your case, you'd sin up for the Verbal Behavior Bundle). For more info, join me for a free workshop at www.marybarbera.com/workshops.

Oh my goodness, that sounds like a really tough situation. If her language level is that of a 1-5 year old, you might consider reading my book: www.TurnAutismAround.com or joining my mini course "Turn Tantrums Around" (and adjust accordingly for her size and abilities. marybarbera.com/turn-tantrums-around-mini-course/. Otherwise, I'd recommend hiring a BCBA to assist with her programming.

What do you suggest when a parent is in denial about their child having autism? My 3 year old granddaughter has obvious signs of autism. She's non verbal, walks on her tip toes, flaps, spins, chews her hair, makes little eye contact, is a very picky eater and bites. The biting happens when she is tired, out of her environment or frustrated. How can I help my daughter help my granddaughter? She's intelligent and is happiest in her home environment playing alone and/or watching TV. She has a new baby brother and is oblivious to it.
