This is when we began asking ourselves if we are in a simulated dream world and somehow the real world is out there

I think the second movie is the best because there is more action and throught the series you begin to understand more and more the concept of the matrix you should listen the whole series. It's not my favorite series of all time too but it's really a unique type of movie and a must to watch entirely

I think the reason Keanu was chosen for this role, was because he IS cyberpunk for many of us. 4 years before he played the lead in Johnny Mnemonic which is based on a short story written by William Gibson. Many credit Gibson as the father of Cyberpunk with his first novel Neuromancer which came out in 1984.

well since the "outside" of the Matrix is just another matrix (as evidenced by Neo's powers still working) and how what Morphius tells Neo about the nature of the matrix not standing up to the simplest scrutiny, then it is just a choice of illusions, really. Which incidentally makes the people who call slurping down corporate and fascist propaganda taking the red pill extra ironic.

the real question is, how the parents could let this movie be watched by a 14 year old in the first place

@@Soulsphere001 yeah but that is because these agents couldn't be useful anymore due to the fact neo became too powerful, thats why they are "upgrades" to try and keep up with his power. Smith was a virus in the sequels, which is well known

@@Soulsphere001 If your "code" is hardwired to the matrix you can survive death. Both the agents and of course "the one" Neo,have theirs embedded and protected in the matrix. The others do not nor do ordinary people. It's Neos purpose. He carries that code even in the real world as is seen in Reloaded.

I remember seeing this in 1999, before everything copied it. lol. It basically did for cinema the same thing Star Wars did in 1977.

Too bad WB stole it from Finnish home movie makers. Even a settlement was made worth millions. It was called Pötrix.

@@samuelslade6717 Actually the matrix itself is a copy of another movie called Dark City, which goes a long way to explaining why when they needed to make sequels and be original with storylines, the quality declined.

I missed it in cinema, but it was the first DVD I baught. I watched it so often that I watched it not only dubbed but in original language. When Reloaded hit theaters in Germany they also had special screenings of the original movie in original language (at least in my location) and when I finally saw it in cinema I knew the lines of at least the first 15min by heart. I later acomplished that we could watch it in school. Besides the fact that the idea of the Matrix in itself is plausible in a way that everything you percieve is just electrical signals in your brain, you would not really be able to disprove that you are NOT living in a Matrix. They also draw a ton of references to an other well known age old "saviour/chosen one" story. :-)

and eventually you will start to think about the Oracle herself.

And then you start to notice the poor character development, worldbuilding and all the compromises made because the producers were too dumb to understand the story that the audience would have. It’s still a great movie don’t get me wrong, but it and the sequels could have been soo much more interesting if it hadn’t shot itself in the foot from the get-go, and introduced important sci-fi concepts to the masses allowing more simulation sci-fi to be greenlit sooner.

Definitely watch this one a couple more times. Then DONT watch the sequels where they fuck it all up!

Thank you, yes this. Also - the "10%" number people hear, is about how much of the brain is "lit up" at any normal instant, but we use all of it over time. There is a moment people "use" close to 100% of their brain however, and it's called an epileptic attack - so it doesn't make you smart or better - it completely disables you.

I WAS probably under the influence of about six hits of acid, a metric shit-ton of cocaine, a bit of hash, and nearly a fifth of vodka. Unless it was the weekend when I partied.

Avatar was advertised as one when it came out. Infinity war and endgame kinda were for harboring such a large cast of "main" characters and continued storylines. I would agree that inception had to have been.

I was thinking the same thing. I saw The Matrix in college a year or two after release and got to have that Star Wars mind-blown experience. And though it may not be ESB, the anticipation of the sequel. Reading this discussion I thought it was too early for the next phenomenon, then I did the math. 22 years and 22 years, wow.

I believe those are "Desert Eagles" and yes . they are very accurate. What kind of hearing protectors did they wear making this. They are invisible.

I'd say it's probable that half the sounds are accurate and half are added in-post. It's a semi-accurate noise in itself (...on average. This movie sometimes gets a little unusual and sci-fi with it).

I agree to a point but in my opinion Reeves went through an extended period of bland performances, of which the Matrix was sadly one. The film is great, but Reeve's performance is a block of wood in a black coat. Not sure what happened there but he seemed to lose his talent for quite some time before regaining it in time for Joh Wick, thank goodness.

@@GriffinPilgrim IMHO He got typecast as Ted "Theodore" Logan. No one wanted him for his acting ability, they wanted him to see something impressive and go "Woah..." with varying degrees of animation behind it. Even with the star power of being "The One" post Matrix he still got stuck mostly in those roles until he really started to lean into the action hero typecasting instead in the late 00s/early 10s.

Legit I almost said that when I went to the Fellowship of the Ring at the theater.

There's the line in the opening scene where Cypher asks Trinity if she thinks Neo is the One. Trinity says it doesn't matter what she believes, but one must evaluate that in the context of her being told by the Oracle that the man she loves will be the One. If she thinks he's the One, it follows that she would necessarily be in love with him. That she doesn't instantly reject the concept but instead dodges the question speaks to how long she's been ruminating on the matter.

I always recognise the sandstone rail bridge near Central.

The W sisters are from Chicago and all the streets mentioned in the script are Chicago streets. I think they actually managed to get one or two scenes shot in Chicago but MOST of it is Sydney.

Some are prequels, some are side stories, and at least one is the first part of a bridge between this film and the second one (the second half is a video game that got a "meh" reception but I liked it).

In the Matrix there's no bodies, everyone is a digital representation. Agents are programs running in the Matrix that can take over the representation of who they want.

@@muckit606 I do seem to recall that the Wachowskis confirmed at one point that when an Agent takes over a new body it does kill the person they jump into though. Not directly like they'd been shot but the Matrix ejects them like it did with Neo, just without the tracking program to let anyone find them.

The way they have Cypher hint at her feelings for Neo because he's watching her it is pretty clever.

All it takes is listening to the intro themes in the very beginning and I'm instantly IMMERSED into the world of the Matrix.

True. My friends and I had fun laughing at the possibilities. 1999 was a great year.

Gattaca is amazing, my first pick to recommend too. Other good options for low action, high drama/story are Moon, Contact, Blade Runner, Ex Machina, Silent Running, and I'd consider Interstellar and even Netflix's I am Mother. I'd skip 2001 a Space Odyssey and Star Trek the Motion Picture despite people recommending them. They're too slow and have hardly any drama of substance.
