I LOVE RORSHACH'S LINE "YOU DON'T SEEM TO UNDERSTAND, I'M NOT LOCKED IN HERE WITH YOU, YOU'RE LOCKED IN HERE WITH ME..."

A nice detail in the comic, is that Rorschach speaks in short sentences, or single words, but his journal is really eloquent. Over time he becomes more eloquent and sane, and his journal entries become shorter, and crazier.

Dr. Manhattan's origin monologue sequence is one of the best parts of the movie and the issue it's based on (Watchmen # 4 out of 12 issues) is among one of the most famous of all comic books. It's fantastic. Alan Moore is on another level.

If you look closely, you can see Bruce Wayne and his parents leaving the theatre in that legendary opening montage. A little fun easter egg. On paper and on screen it is part of DC Universe.

A timely piece of trivia: The character The Comedian was originally going to be Peacemaker, since DC had just acquired the IP when the author pitched the idea. But DC told the author (Alan Moore) they'd rather he use all original characters instead. He still pretty much wrote the character the exact same way, though.

The Watchmen movie was based on one of the best graphic novels ever made and the first to enter the New York Times bestseller list. It's not just a comic book, it's a masterpiece worth reading.

It's funny you say that Adrian reminds you of David from Alien: Covenant, as both characters utilize the Ozymandias poem as part of their character.

What you have to realize is that this comic answers the question comic readers have been asking for decades: what if superheroes were real. And the answer is: it wouldn't be all that good because they'd still have the same flaws as normal people.

I love the dark depression of the comedian. Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays it so well. You really feel for him. A guy who may have started as a hero but as time passes by he realizes they aren't really heroes. They're not saving anything. He accepts it. He's a monster and a weapon that the government can just aim at each new enemy when they inevitably come along and say kill.

This is probably zack snyders magnum opus (for me at least) he was able to translate some of the most dynamic action and scenery In the book onto the screen and the writing was nowhere near the genius of Alan Moore’s but i think Snyder made up for that with cinematic flair. Overall one of the best superhero films ever made and it’s based on arguably the most important, well written, and academically respected comic book of all time.

Fun Fact: Jeffrey Dean Morgan turned down the part of The Comedian at first because the character died three pages into the script and he didn't bother to read past that. His agent had to insist that he read further before Morgan realized the character was central to the entire film.

This movie is what Unforgiven is for western... a dark wrap up for comic movies.

I saw this movie when it came out in 2009. I had the privilege of watching it in the movie theatre. I adore this movie so much.

“Rorschach gave me villainous vibes” Well, he basically just quoted Travis Bickle, so… it’s a mixed bag.

This movie is based on the only graphic novel listed on Time magazine`s greatest novels of the 20th century. It was written by Alan Moore in 1986 & has been in continuous print ever since. It`s a must read. This is as good an adaption as you can get without turning it in a mini-series. A lot had to be left out. Rorschach was the breakout star of the book & the movie HBO recently did a mini-series based on the comic book series set in the future. It`s a must watch as well.

This was the first hardcore R-Rated movie I've ever seen I couldn't finish watching when I first saw. It forever changed the way I used to see the world.

Best graphic novel adaptation of all time. For some of us there is Watchmen and every other "superhero" movie ever made. This story deconstructs all the superhero norms and tropes of the previous decades. Not to mention it is a scathing critique of mid-1980s America.

Watchmen is a Masterpiece. Ahead of its time.

This movie and its comic source material are also under the DC brand, but as an alternate reality. Dr. Manhattan even moves over to the main DC comic universe at the end of the story.

This story is just so brilliant. I love both the movie version and the comic version of it. I just love the stories that makes you think on subjects that normally people dodges to actually consider. This is one of those stories.

It is a tribute to this story, that by story's end you felt sorry for Rorschart and understood Dr. Manhattan, and realized Nite Owl was the only friend Rorschart ever had (and btw, that makes him the greatest hero of them all).

Rorschach is a hyper version of batman Greatest detective, never compromise on moral and truth

The symbol on his forehead is not a watch or a clock face, it's a hydrogen atom. Dr. Manhattan name taken after the Manhattan experiment creating the first atomic bomb. Rorschach is the best character in this movie, and one of the best characters in comics. Thanos's objective was to destroy half of all life in the universe not just intelligent beings or humanoids or humans on earth specifically.

The story of the child killer and how Rorschach's normal personality died the night the girl child died was the most powerful story. That and the quote "I'm not trapped in here with YOU you are trapped in here with ME.

I saw this in the theatre... and as the trailers were ending, and the movie was about to start, this guy come in, sits down farther in the row with his two kids that looked about 8yrs old. I think he thought 'Superhero movie! I'll take the kids!' LOL..... he left with them fairly fast. The rating may have been a clue, dude.

A world too self-destructive and ethically complex for any hero to save. It’s the antithesis of the idea of Superheroes.

Jackie Earl Haley, who played Rorschach, had a very promising career when he was young. You should watch the movie "Breaking Away". He's not the star, but he still is very good in that. He kind of disappeared though after that, with mostly minor roles. In one sense, this was his come-back.

Sadly this movie doesn't get the recognition it truly deserves 😔

This film was highly criticized at the time because it left out many elements of the original comic, but of course the comic is very long, so it is impossible to adapt it to a film of more than 2 hours.

The Ultimate cut of this movie is really the one to watch, it includes the Tales of the Black Freighter. It’s absolutely fantastic.

Love that bit of foreshadowing about the ending during Dr. Manhattan's monologue. "It's too late. Always has been. Always will be, too late."

You may not have realized (or maybe someone down the comments already pointed that out) that Rorschach is present during the funeral scene, passes by the restraunt Lourie and Daniel had their meeting and some other places too, he is the guy with a Peace sign banner.

I loved the graphic novel and I was a little disappointed in the film when it came out. However, repeated viewings have improved it for me. Also, it's vastly improved in the Ultimate Cut and the inclusion of The Tales of the Black Freighter.

The Watchmen is a DC Comic. It was usually separate from the known DC comic heroes until a few years ago when they connected them all together

Now that you’ve seen this, you also need to check out Sin City. The extended version if you can find it. That movie is frame by frame it’s graphic novel counterpart. Brilliantly shot and paced.

If you do end up watching the Watchmen tv series, you need to know that it takes place after the events of the Watchmen graphic novel, which has a sorta different ending than the movie, so you'll need to read the graphic novel before watching the show

Watchmen is set in an alternate history.

Anyone could use a fire extinguisher, you just pull the pin, point the hose, and pull the trigger. They purposefully make them simple to use.

So Watchmen was originally planned to add newly acquired characters from Charleston Comics to the DC stable. So all the heros in Watchmen have direct parallels to other characters. This is all preamble to the Comedian being based on Peacemaker. Yes that Peacemaker.

What Snider misunderstood about The Watchmen is that it's a deconstruction and demystification of the Superhero. Comics were never the same after its publication.

Now you can (mostly) watch HBO's Watchmen series. It takes place a generation later in that universe but draws heavily from a specific moment in the graphic novel that Snyder left out of his version. Watchmen is a great read and helps a lot when watching the HBO series.

This movie might be worth revisiting sometime later in the "Ultimate Cut". Watchmen is based on a graphic novel of the same name (one of the best there are) - and the story in that book is actually told in chunks, with a secondary story intertwined that comments on the main narrative in subtle ways. This secondary story was adapted into its own standalone animated movie, and then in the Watchmen Ultimate Cut, they took the Director's Cut of Watchmen (which has a bunch of scenes from the comic that were not in the theatrical version) and basically re-created the book by inserting the animated movie into it and slowly telling both stories in chunks in the exact same manner as in the source material (with a few short additional scenes on top for the transitions). It's obviously a lot longer than what you watched, being 2 movies in one - but it might be fun to check it out in a year or so and see what you think :) I love this movie. It's one of my favorites - even if the comic stands far and beyond above it in quality. I also don't think Zack Snyder did really manage to convey the core and soul of the comics adequately, turning it into way to much of a glorification of superheroes, where the comic book was a ruthless deconstruction with an even more critical view on the whole idea. But the movie is great even in spite of that.

The blue man (Doctor Manhattan) you're looking at right there is arguably the strongest character in the DC Universe and even the Marvel Universe, no one compares to him.

The thing about Dr. Manhattan is demeanor belies his feelings. Janney leaving him and not staying with him as he died still hurt him greatly. I love how its a full circle moment in the TV Series.

If you are gonna watch it again, I'd recommend to watch the Director's Cut.

Ironically, the movie cuts the best bit of the ending that’s in the graphic novel. The graphic novel is 1000 times more mind blowing. It really hits the question of ‘who watches the watchers?’

When I say the book is better I mean it’s one of the best pieces of English literature ever written. That being said I do love the film, for what it is. The HBO series is a sequel and is also very good.

In the flashback to the 1960s and very early '70s the Comedian is in his mid-to-late 40s - and most of the Watchmen were in their 20s and early 30s. By the time you hit the mid 1980s, the Comedian is definitely starting to look old.

Rorshach's journal did contain that Ozymandias was behind it. It just wouldnt contain "I went to Antartica and died" or what the motive was.

I love this movie, so many layers and dark without being farcical, definitely a long slow watch but really is such a wonderful movie

I've heard this is worth rewatching multiple times, especially if one hasn't read the comics/graphic novels. As I understood it, Moore wanted to really push the envelope on superheroes, what would or might actually occur, and, as such, this became one of the landmark deconstructions of the premise of superheroes and a world where they exist wouldn't sustain itself or that heroes wouldn't.

Love your reactions, Mary 🙂👍👍. I have to say that the director's cut (3 hrs) is the definitive cut of the film. I know that at 2.5 hrs it feels slow however a lot of the restored footage in the director's cut draws clearer connections between the scenes and allows for a less jarring and more natural pace. Character development benefits as well. Generally, whenever Zack Snyder releases a director's cut that is the version to watch.

Few people notice the snow freezes mid air when Manhattan confronts Rorschach at the end.

Remember the guy never picked up the diary, we never see what crank file he uses.

Look at it this way, Mary: you said that it was a bit slow and you said that there was a lot to process. It's the pace it is SO THAT you can process it. :-) This is one of my favourite films. It's also one of the film's that is closest to its source material, a graphic novel by Alan Moore, an award-winning writer who also wrote V FOR VENDETTA.
