I agree completely. It's like Pliskova last year when she smashed the umpires chair, people find anger and frustation more relatable if it doesn't happen all the time. I also think that's why people had such a negative reaction to Serenas outburst at the 2018 US Open, the public had kinda seen it all before. In her 20 years on court I think this is the most wound up I've ever seen Venus, that's testament to her poise and grace imo.
@JCole-fg3rr5 жыл бұрын
Mel1lvar no people had such a negative reaction to Serena being upset because she’s a black woman. Serena’s only been upset 4 times in her career, and they were all over very questionable calls, in very important moments. Male players go off more than she does and there is never that much backlash.
@ronnydraper5 жыл бұрын
@@Mel1lvar No public hasnt. She actually hasnt gotten that angry that many times during a match. If you watch her play religiously you'd know that. Serena got hate like anyone who has dominated a sport for so long would have because so many want the underdog to win. Its why they still consider Serena v. Maria a "rivalry" when Serena has gotten the better of those matches.
@usaskjock5 жыл бұрын
@@JCole-fg3rr it's more that Serena has lost her cool in big matches and thus the public is more aware of it. The 2004 Capriati match was a travesty as was Indian Wells 2001 where Serena was 100% the victim. The 2009 match is an interesting one as we all agree it was a bizarre foot fault call but she handled it poorly. 2011 and 2018 were her fault entirely. Serena is 100% correct that a male player would never be called for code violation for 'thief' esp in a SLam final, never would be given a game penalty.... by anyone BUT Carlos Ramos who is consistently the most stringent ump on tour.

Aaron Lecciones I love when someone who hasn’t walk in someone else’s shoes nor knows anything about their life or up bringing tries speak on behalf of them. You have no idea what it was like for them being black and trying to make it in a white sport. Nor do you know what it was like for Arthur Ashe or Althea Gibson. Venus felt as if she was being cheated which may have had deep rooted feelings from how she had been treated in previous tennis matches. You don’t know so don’t make judgements. Also this is the most I’ve ever seen Venus get angry she is one of the classiest woman to ever play the game and part of the reason there is equal prize money. Before you start judging people walk in their shoes. You do realize the reason there is a challenge system is due to how badly Serena Williams was cheated in a match before right? And all Serena could do at the time was accept the calls even though she knew they were cheating her. Let’s put you through countless situations where you’re treated differently than everyone else and put you under high stress environments where you are competing for millions of dollars and see how well you can handle it.

I can understand Venus being upset there were some close calls. I got a little ticked when Pam Shriver tried to defend the one that hit the chalk that flew up. Venus was only 18 with immense pressure on her, especially playing someone that has had this much experience and knows the pressures well, I don't think it's fair to hold this against her. And she mellowed out a lot and got more focused. I miss Jana so much, I can't believe she's gone, and yes one of the best net players ever, I agree. Watching these highlights is like going back in time and witnessing a significant change in tennis history. It marks the transition from the serve and volley type of game to the baseline and power game played by most women on the tour today. The two women have contrasting game styles. Jana plays a serve and volley type of game and doesn't even bother to play a flat backhand! She constantly uses a sliced backhand which leads to a low bounce on a grass court and puts pressure on the opponent. It is a breath of fresh air to see a female tennis player play like this. On the other hand, this game style is not very effective on other surfaces and with the courts being slowed down in recent years (so they say) this game style has become quite obsolete even on grass. Then again, Venus's power game nowadays has become the norm. When she first burst onto the scene she seemed to be able to sweep everyone aside with her raw power. However, with all the women having similar game styles these days, that surprise element is gone. This may be why she hasn't won a GS since 2008. I believe this lack of variety and depth is also why so many female tennis players have been winning GS in recent years and why it's so rare to see one dominating (excluding Serena Williams). It's difficult to identify a specific game style in most top players since they all play alike. One of my favourite players is Justine Henin. She was the perfect combination of old and modern.

I don't know, it is possible she beats Hingis in the semis but I would still slightly favor Hingis. Venus did not get her first slam win over Hingis until 2000, even though she had many wins in 98-99 in smaller tournaments. The winner of that match would definitely beat Tauziat in the final, the only reason the Novotna- Tauziat final was close is Tauziat was the only one out of Hingis, Novotna, Venus who regularly tried to make Jana pass off the backhand side, which is something she was not comfortable at all doing. I think it's because Venus felt annoyed with Novotna's game.... anyway she's human, everyone can get angry...

The first drama-ed call was actually correct, the ball was so in. Not the 2nd one though, which was clearly out.

Hi, I'm sorry if I bother you, thank you very much for your beautiful tennis videos. Please don't you also own the matches of Jana Novotná or Petr Korda and their achievements, I have been looking for them for a long time, but no one wants to show her success in Wimbledon 1998 or the Australian Open 1998. Thank you very much in advance for your answer and above all I wish you good health. Best regards Dominik :)

Venus is obviously one of it not the fastest player of all time (I give Clijsters #1 spot personally but she's top three with Serena and Clijsters) but people forget how much of a jock Novotna was. She's damn quick

Wow, Venus was right on both occasions... Rip Jana, at least Jana finally won Wimbledon that year after several disappointments.

Venus does have struggles against good S&Vs because both her returns and passing shots are her weaker parts. In her early careers she could not predict slices well which also brought to the loss - this improved a lot from 1999 on, but has relapsed so badly (due to her backhand falling from her best weapon to her worst by 2010). But there is no more good slicers and S&Vers anymore so we couldn't test how bad Venus is at them today.
@matthieucohen98445 жыл бұрын
No it's not true ....she was only 17 in this match....in Her early matches with the best players the problem in Her close defeats was the fact she wasn't playing percentage tennis like novotna/sanchez ect she was too agressive it resulted by lots of unforced errors in the wrong moment of the match ...and the good S&Vs from her generation henin and mauresmo she has no problems with them beating them all the time
@apaarmaheshwari86733 жыл бұрын
Her backhand is still very good. Don't know what you are saying.
@peterzhou92673 жыл бұрын
@@apaarmaheshwari8673 no way her backhand is working anymore. I think she suffered an injury around 2006 which would virtually lead her to reconstruct her game. It is as if she no longer trust her backhand anymore after 2009 and went for the forehand which is more error prone even after the adjustments.
@apaarmaheshwari86733 жыл бұрын
@@peterzhou9267 Maybe you aren't watching then. I saw so many Australian open and WTA finals videos. Her backhand is fine. Yes I know the power she had back then isn't there but still it is strong.

Compared to nowadays tennis, Venus didn't use powerful enough passing shots and smashes in too many cases.

Watched this match at Ben Venue Way. On and off The Square, I was. The house had an odour which conflated talcum powder with bubble gum. A great summer!

Sorry guys, I'm a tennis player and a psychologist and I always pay close attention to the handshake. Am I the only one? What happened at the end here? Anybody know. Novotna looked annoyed with something from Venus with the handshake. RIP Jana.
@Calicokit1015 жыл бұрын
TheRealDeePoole I think Jana made a comment at the net that Venus just ignored for some reason. Certainly these two were never friends. Venus wasn't too respectful to the older generation back then either, especially with her 'pleased to meet you' handshakes at the net.

Venus gave her the olde slimy dead fish 🐟 handshake. 😎
@tomgraham60715 жыл бұрын
Venus was actually quite rude to opponents really until the mid-2000s. You think that was a cold handshake, see the one she gave to Mary Pierce after beating her in Zurich in 98. She was so rude to Mary for no apparent reason. Stuff goes on in the locker room we don't see, but I can't imagine Jana or Mary Pierce, who was one of the warmer and more friendly players, deserved that. Still, she was young...
@jacksongreene36875 жыл бұрын
@@tomgraham6071 Until the mid 2000s? That's not true. I do agree that she was kind of rude to Mary but Venus did not get along with some players back then and they gave her a hard time behind the scenes and in the locker room. I read a book about this called "Venus Envy" back in the early 2000s.
@tomgraham60715 жыл бұрын
@@jacksongreene3687 Yes, we don't know what went on behind the scenes. But Venus is a strange character at the best of times. Many admirable things about her, but some of her press conferences last year were again extremely rude when okay a lot of the questions are stupid and she must be busy, but she finds the time to advertise for American Express when actually tennis allowed her to do that and continues to allow her to do that.
