What a satisfying win for Jana. They were rivals in juniors and Steffi won all of their matches (even the very close matches). Jana raised her level and really came through when the pressure was on her. Simply awesome. I felt bad for her in the final, she went up against a 17 year old fearless Monica Seles and it cost her the slam title. I was really glad she won Wimbledon in '98 when she was winding down her career. RIP Jana Novotna.

She was one of my favorite players and loving her was tough because of all these very close matches she didn’t manage to tilt in her favor. Her wins at the 1997 YEC and 1998 Wimbledon, Bronze medal in singles and silver in doubles, 12 doubles slams titles were definitely sweet.

the technical skill of these two (and others of this era) is much higher than today. not just baseline power hitting but actual tactics and variation. what an entertaining era of women's tennis. RIP, Jana.

I couldn't agree anymore. In my view, this was the golden age of women's tennis. You still had net rushers like Navratilova, you had baseline power from Seles and Capriati, you had all court play from Sabatini and Graf, and you had the sluggers like Sanchez Vicario and Martinez. So many others I haven't even mentioned. I think the racquet technology and the string technology really changed the game to the detriment of the sport (at least as far as fans watching the sport).

@@darkeneydarkeney8092 i agree. but there is a lack of tactics and variation in the women's game. it's so one dimensional. there is no real reason why a baseliner can't develop a net game. look at the overheads these two are hitting. not even the men are cranking overheads like these two.

True! Current players like Badosa or Kontaveit would be utterly flummoxed against this skill and variety…and both have been ranked as high as number 2 🙈

@@TheNathanj2009 goodness me. to be honest, i don't know many of the current women's players. i know iga swiatek and ash barty. but since justine henin and kim clijsters stopped, i lost interest. i used to love the women's as much as the men's. i had the biggest crsuh on martina hingis and anke huber. obviously loved steffi graf and jana novotna. so glad she won a wimbledon. anyway, i'm rambling about old times. good chat.

1991 when Steffi's confidence really at a low. Other players also found a way to play her. Jana Novotna here using a lot of the tactics Gabriela Sabatini used to beat Steffi so often during 1990-92. Staying in the rallies from the back court and finding her way in to the net, often on short, sharply angled cross court slice backhands that Steffi found harder to run around. Also, taking plenty of time between points and not allowing Steffi to speed through the points as she liked. In 1991-92, Jana won three matches against Steffi, two of them at big tournaments.

Jana will be forever missed. RIP to her. Steffi had such an atrocious forecourt game in this match. Should have stayed on the baseline doing her forehand thing and stayed away from the net. Idk what she was thinking!

I always hated Graf, how satisfying it was to watch her struggle for the next 2 and a half years as Seles cleaned her clock until a graf fan (naturally) stabbed Seles to stop her from beating Graf!

Graf raised her game and that's why Monica's return was a mere asterisk on tennis history. Not properly training and a poor diet will always catch up with you.

@@curiositychasethis makes no sense. Graf struggled through most of 1994 with injuries, leading to the Spaniards winning 3 of 4 slams and Sabatini winning YEC. If Seles was ready she could have rejoined the tour at that point. Graf was at her peak in 1995 tennis wise, it didn’t prevent Seles from returning and coming within one point of beating her at the USO, despite not playing competitively for 2+ years.

@@Hoyammath7 to 3. Graf won 1 per year 1990-1992 while Seles won 1 in 1990 and 3 per year in 1991 and 1992. The 8th one for Seles was Australian 1993, her last win before being sideline by the attack in Hamburg. From these, Seles won 3 against Graf and Graf won one against Seles.

No player has ever dominated for more than three years at time. Look it up. Monica's diet and poor training would have caught up to her eventually with or without the stabbing.
