Fun fact, you can run cheap vodka through a water pitcher filter 2 or 3 times and it takes the impurities out, making it comparable in taste to the expensive vodka.

I put the bottle in a dark place, and after 30 days I removed and replaced the herbs with new ones and i repeat the process at least 2 more times, to make it more concentrated. I used between 15 to 20 drops in a 4 oz of water , 3 times per day. I learned from mexican culture, and so far works perfectly.

I have made an echinacea tincture with glygerine for almost 20 years. Now I make extra to share with my adult daughters. When my son was little he asked for "tasty water" when he wasn't feeling well. That was water with a couple spoonfuls of tincture. :)

Just made my first tincture today. White willow bark. I've made Dandelion oil and it works for pain, topically. I use it a lot so need to make more. But am just now learning tinctures. We need these things more than we need chemicals. So I'm hoping this journey takes me a long way

Hi Mary! From what I understand, a tincture is an extract using 80 proof or above alcohol. Anything below that is an extract, has a shorter shelf life, and the dosage is larger. So when someone is searching for a recipe, that might be helpful. You can also use wine to make extracts - mine is homemade using Heidi from Rain Country’s method.

@@MarysNest both you and Heidi mirror each other in a lot of ways but still have your own touch on many topics! That's a sign of like minds think alike! I've known people to use a crock pot where it's used as a water-bath or they just throw the herbs in the crockpot with the oil throw it on low and boom you're set!

Hello Mary! Thank you so very much for all you are doing! :) To save money, after my tincture is ready, can I add new plant matter to it and let it steep again for another 4-6 weeks? This way, it will be twice as strong (and I'd take about half the dose) and I don't need to buy another bottle of alcohol for the next batch.

hey linda, im about to do my first tincture. 60% vodka, that good green green (cannabis), powdered ginseng extrack and fresh rosemary. Im gonna do a small amount. i got about 2grams cannabis, 5 sprigs rosemary and enuff ginseng, not sure yet how much im gonna put it, not alot. prolly gonna put like 5-6 ounces vodka and the stuff. Gonna go also do it with heat in an hour, so i dont have to wait 4 weeks. Any recommendations with dosage of the ready stuff? also the bits mary mentions in the video, what does it matter? i dont mind if i have some bits in my tincture. Unless it takes away shelflife or something else.

I’ve used 60% 80 proof alcohol and 40% water for my liquid and it works great!! Distilled water of course….tincture will last at least 5 years!! I do this because I want to extract all alcohol and water soluble properties in the herbs.

Aloha Mary, Thanks for this video. I'm making Blue Turmeric tincture and I followed 1:5 because I harvested and dehydrated the Turmeric first, so I'm working with dried herb. Now, I left it 12 weeks and it's soooo strong! Should I dilute it at this stage? add more alcohol? I'm also following "Strictly Medicinal" advice and added 75% Organic Vodka and 25% distilled water ( as the menstruum ) . I'm told some Turmeric constituents are best extracted with a bit of distilled water. What do you think of that? and would you say is the dose? I normally would say 10-25 drops and yet I'm confused because I left it longer and it's so strong. Thanks Mary!

I throw all my leftovers from my tinctures in a large jar with filtered water. It’s a running jar, it’s always being added too. Then I use it as a disinfectant for counters and hands. If the smell is too earthy then I throw in lemon or orange peals.

Hello from Greece, great presentation! Let's discuss a concern i have about wild berries and plant parts that are full of tannins. For example i 'm making Myrtus communis and Prunus spinosa berries-tinctures without smashing them. The final tincture is tannin-less. If i smash them the result is full of tanins and really disgusting to the average person. Whats you opinion. Thanks in advance Michelangelo.

Interesting video, Mary. Lori and I were learning new things today. We had never really used or come across a tincture before. We were, however, very interested in this video's remedy because her mother has headaches and migraines frequently. Maybe something like this could help. Thanks!
