It's because of my brown skin. I have traveled to some countries.... Philippines, Thailand, Hawaii, Australia, they’re all think I'm the local of their country 😄 In any case, no one can guess where I really come from? Only my tribes people know where I am really from 😅👍🏽❤️ I am proud to be an indigenous, aboriginal or an native. My parents are Austronesians of Madagascar who, during the 60s, were told by Elders that we originated from the Island of Taiwan. As a result, my parents represented the Indian Ocean Island/Nation of Madagascar in Taipei. Result? I became the 1st Malagasy baby to be born back onto "The Island of the Ancestors"!!!! I'm extremely proud of it!! My parents and I went to visit our Ancestral Tribes in the mountains and, apparently the Locals wept and said: "Our Children are back" after my parents dressed in Traditional clothes. Since the mid 1980s and, with indirect pressures from the ever-present French Neo-Colonials, Madagascar was no longer in its original POLITICAL status "the African Union & Madagascar" but just "moulded in"! As much as World youth mixes positively into the Future, it is more often noticeable that there are ethnic mixed between African and Austronesian, (just like more mixed between Europeans and Afro-Carribeans in the UK, France and in the Western World!). Nevertheless, the FOUNDING LANGUAGE and fundamental Traditions are that of the Austronesians, with all its ethno-tribal variants Madagascar contains. It is important to stress as well, that the revival and underscoring of Austronesian identity (the 3 main being Merina, Betsileo and, Vezo) are fast seen as "racism" by the rest of the population. As if it were forbiddent to BE ONESELF and BE PROUD of it! There is, apparently, a lot of stigma in Madagascar about discussing and turning heads towards the Reality: the EAST is were language, traditions, fundamental food base, Music, Oral tradition, Poetry, Respect and Worship of the Ancestors comes from: FACT. I was "Made in Taiwan" and, most PROUD of it!😃

I went to the southern part of Taiwan specifically in Kaohsiung and Pingtung in 2019 to celebrate the lantern festival and I noticed the huge similarities of Filipino tribes with the Taiwanese tribes. It was like I was sent back to the Philippines but I was in Taiwan. 😂

I love Taiwan. I visited for a week. It is a spectacular place. When I visited Taiwan, I remember seeing two friends walking down the street. One friend looked Chinese and the other looked SE Asian, I was surprised that I could tell the difference so easily, but it was there, one had a whole lot more Aboriginal blood than the other. There is a fascinating museum about Aboriginal Taiwanese in Taipei. Interesting stuff.

Kind of strange that these Taiwanese aboriginals formed the basis of the Austronesian peoples, who have been confirmed genetically to have sailed as far east as the Americas. Just goes to show how much we don't know of our extraordinary world and the ability of our species to overcome the impossible.

8:52 maybe that wooden instrument is the oldest Austronesian music instrument. Still can be found on many tribes of malaysian, Indonesian, Brunei and the Philippines. I dont know about other regions. Do they have it too?

Thanks for putting this very informative yet concise video together. It's wonderful for those who speak English to be able to understand the role of indigenous Taiwanese people in shaping an expansive region of the world. Since a majority of indigenous Taiwanese speak Mandarin as a first language and are rarely fluent in English, it's difficult for them to directly transmit their stories to the world. I've lived in Taiwan for two years and have interacted with several of the Formosan tribes, particularly in the south. I also worked in the Philippines for several years, and it's amazing to see some of the cultural/linguistic connections between these two regions. I would only add two things: The largest tribe in Taiwan (Amis) is pronounced "ah-meece." Secondly, there are some photos of the badjao people and their stilt houses and unique fishing style. Although many of them are Muslim, they are probably distantly related to indigenous Taiwanese. Although I haven't encountered them in Taiwan (the current government surely wouldn't tolerate their off-the-grid lifestyle) there are many badjao communities in the central and southern regions of the Philippines. Keep up the great work. Taiwan's borders are fully reopened. Please come and see the diversity of these people firsthand.

Though most Taiwanese like myself are adapted to Chinese culture, lot of us might been Austronesian people aka indigenous Taiwanese one point in the history. Sadly those histories weren't well documented enough by the Qing dynasty government back then. Despite every accessible documentations from both every regime led Taiwan and my own family points out I'm from Hokkien background. I can tell there's not only Hoklo, but some features of Philippines or indigenous Taiwanese on me and my father. For 200 undocumented years, Hoklos had converted a lot of indigenous Taiwanese to Chinese, cus for them it's either adopting a Chinese name and married to Hoklo prople, or get killed or expelled from their own tribes.

If you are austronesian let's count the numbers in your language! I'm an Indonesian 1 : satu 2 : dua 3 : tiga 4 : empat 5 : lima 6 : enam 7 : tujuh 8 : delapan 9 : sembilan 10 : sepuluh

As I am also doing research on Taiwanese aborigines, the narrative here was actually only focusing on "Mountain aborigines" which refused to cooperate with the Qing government and finally being conquered by the Japanese colonial government. Actually, there is also another category, "Plains aborigines," a group of tribes starting to cooperate with Dutch government, later the Qing government. "Plains aborigines" became the ally of the Qing government to fight against Chinese immigrants and "Mountain aborigines." To divide and rule such three groups, the Qing government even drew two "Aboriginal borders" in sequence to split Taiwan into three regions, and reallocated "Plain aborigines" into the central zone among the three regions. Although "Plains aborigines" were less known in the public( mostly because they were treated as "Chinese" during the Japanese colonial areas,) they were actually the ones deeply exploited by the Chinese immigrants and the Qing empire. They were mobilized into warfares, and some even participated in repressing rebellions in mainland China, but the Qing government's compensations for these tribes' warfare --land rights in the central zone among three regions were not well executed and protected. For example, for Pangsoa tribes(崩山八社） in Maoli and Taichung, although the Qing government required them to police aboriginal borders, which took nearly all manpower of the tribes, the Qing government's land allotment in return was located 60kms to 100km farrwary from their tribes--so basically they did not really get any returns! Many tribes of "Plains aborigines" collapsed in the late Qing era due to such kind of state extraction, so many of them only abandon their own cultures and become more like Chinese settlers, and that' why the Japanese colonial government treated them as the Chinese, instead of indigenous people. Until very recently, the offspring of these tribes started to ask their identity back.

Here's to hoping that more is being done to research and preserve the diversity of languages on the planet. I would like to point out a phrase from your video that "Taiwan was returned to China". The Island's been a contentious issue ever since Japan's defeat in WWII. And technically, Taiwan's been in a kind of political limbo on the international stage. We either exist as a country or a province depending on who you ask. Honestly, I'm just glad that the simple mention of Taiwan hasn't ignited controversy here. I'd like to thank you for keeping politics out of your videos Masaman. And if you ever get interested in going down this particular rabbit hole, I'd be happy to supply sources. Taiwan is a complicated and messy story. Doesn't stop the island from being a fascinating mix of diverse cultures though =).

The Tao tribe of Orchid Island (Yami) in Taiwan are more related to the Ivatan tribe of Batanes Islands in the Philippines. Their language is classified as Batanic which is sometimes considered a branch of the Philippine Language Family but sometimes considered one of the main branches of the Austronesian Language Family at par with Malayo-Polynesian and Formosan languages. The Tao tribe could have been the descendants of Batanic peoples back-migrating to Formosa who settled in Yami Isle.

Based on what I've learnt at school, why Taiwan is considered as the starting point of the austronesian migration is because when looking at it from a historical linguistics perspective, the languages spoken there appear to be typologically archaic in terms its lexical inventory and phonology, and also their grammatical structure. Speaking of grammatical structure, the austro-malayo languages had adopted the SVO structure due to the effect of language contact with germanic and romance language speakers (traders and colonialists ).

Been to a local aboriginal museum in Taiwan 2 years ago, was amazed by their culture and history, and learned that they are actually quite linguistically diverse rather to be a single ethnic group, and enhanced my knowledge of Austronesian peoples.

Minor error, the Dutch imported Ming Chinese to work for them in Taiwan, not Qing Chinese. There were several revolts by the Ming Chinese workers, and subsequently, when Ming China was folding under the pressure of the invading Manchus, Koxinga, a "Ming loyalist", sacked Zeelandia and drove the Dutch out of Southern Taiwan with the Ming Chinese workers serving as guides. That is when the Dutch tried several times to team up with Qing China to defeat Koxinga, but eventually gave up Taiwan for good.

I was comparing my genome data that refers to the ancient root-population groups w/ a NEA friend (myself being a 48+% Austronesian, 30% SEA, and the rest went to polynesian, melanesian and a small percentage of tungusic-altaic admix according to MDLP-k23b) with a surprising difference that he also has some austronesian and SEA percentages ranging from 10-30%, but it was exactly the higher percentage of the tungusic-altaic admixture that really distinguish the difference between the two groups genetically generally speaking. Just for the record, based on my visit to Taiwan back in '87, when I talked with some of the residents, Amis is pronounced ah-MEEZ (1 = ah-ME), not Amos.

The Philippines was a spring board of Aboriginal people of Formosa 5,000 years ago from Taiwan to Philippines, and to Indonesian islands and to Oceana.
