CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Rocky (Eric Stoltz) arrives for his first day of school and is met with uncomfortable stares and a few mean jokes.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This is the true story of Rocky Dennis (Eric Stoltz), a personable young man suffering from "lionitis," a fatal disease which causes hideous facial disfigurement. The son of freewheeling biker Rusty Dennis (Cher), Rocky is accepted without question by his mom's boyfriends and cycle buddies, but treated with pity, condescension, and disgust by much of the outside world. The local high school principal tries to get Rocky classified as brain-damaged so he won't have to enroll the boy in his school, but Rusty fights for her son's rights with the ferocity of a mother lioness. Rocky makes friends easily both at school and at summer camp. He also falls in love with Diana (Laura Dern), a blind girl who cannot see his deformed countenance and is entranced by the boy's kindness and compassion. Now that he's got his own life in order, Rocky sets about to wean his chronically depressed mother from her drug habit. Mask is the sort of story that might have ending up wallowing in its own pathos had the acting, direction and scriptwriting (by Anna Hamilton Phelan) been anything less than very good. The film proved a much-needed financial success for director Peter Bogdanovich, though unfortunately it didn't come soon enough to stave off his declaring personal bankruptcy.

Cast: Dennis Burkley, Eric Stoltz, Allison Roth, Marsha Warfield
Director: Peter Bogdanovich

@@jawuanhart8540 What I find interesting is that the topic of empathy has come into the spotlight, yet I see less of it than ever before. It seems that displaying so-called "empathy" has become a form of social currency all its own, and with that it has lost much of its meaning and positive value. I see many people speaking in the name of empathy, while simultaneously using it as a justification for rage and hatred of any opposing belief, idea, etc. Even if it starts as genuine empathy, it so often morphs into self-righteousness, devoid of empathy with its goals tuned to mostly self-serving solutions.

That’s actually a handsome rocky Dennis. The real rocky Dennis looked a lot worse than this actor portraying him. It’s a real shame he’s not with us. It just wasn’t meant to be. I bet he was a real good guy. I wouldn’t have the heart to live through the bullying like he did.

Warsha Warfield was the teacher who also played the baliff in Night Court. This is a fantastic movie. I was 9 when this came out but understood the circumstances and had so much empathy for Rocky. This movie taught me so much about accepting others regardless of their appearance and how it's wrong to bully and make people feel like they don't belong. These are powerful lessons to learn at such a young age.

This was a very inspiring film back in the day with a great cast. It’s a pity people will still refuse to look past the superficial exterior to see the real depth of the person as a whole. Rocky Dennis proved that we are more than just the sum of our parts. He had real friends and family who truly loved the child, the boy and the man he was before his passing. How many of us can say we have those “ real “ friends and not the fair weather kind?

There were kids who were made fun of at my school for various different reasons and I regret not defending them. At the time I was happy to be one of the chorus and just glad it wasn't me on the receiving end. Decades later I am ashamed of myself.

I like the way he uses humor to deal with the bullying. It took me a long time to accept my appearence, and joking about it with other made the bullying stop eventually. I wish I had been as confident as Rocky, somedays I didn't even wanna go to school.

As a kid, this was the movie that turned around my stereotype of Bikers. To this day, just about every biker I’ve met or know are the coolest and most loving people

A friend remembers seeing him at the Puente Hills mall (same mall where the Back to the Future parking lot scene where Marty goes back to 1955 was shot) ...this was sometime in the 1970s. RIP Rocky Dennis
