What I love about Ed is that he’s not fancy or extra with his process. I see all these prop makers trying to make things look professional and neat by using all these expensive products, and then you have Ed, who’s got decades worth of experience using silicone from a hardware store lol

Oh wow! I just bought a fox latex mask for really cheap and wanted to add details to it a more realistic result. One thing I thought I could do is to add fur to the mask. I watched a few tutorials and it involves more expensive tools and binders. This is a thin latex too, so I don't know if I can punch the hair on. This gives me a new idea to work with it. Thank you so much :)

I heard that there’s a method where you do one layer of latex then wait for it to dry then cut strips of burlap and apply one to two layers then let it dry. After that, you add one more layer of latex for comfort and the burlap adds a lot of strength durability.

this is quite a tremendous improvement over your alien zombie, thing I think, maybe because you are working with something more akin to what we are all used to, so the adage "do what you know"? (since its a human zombie, as opposed to an alien one, which we really don't know what aliens would be like, so as humans we tend to try and push our imaginations, and get it wrong sometimes as far as believability, and sometimes we get it right, so its more a trial and error, but looking at dead decaying things and humans, we see both every day, in some way or another so easier to extrapolate, what you want to make that is believable XD)

Hi Ed, just wanted to send a massive thank you from the UK for sharing your knowledge and expertise, you inspired me to have a try at sculpting and pouring my own mask following your instruction, I’m thrilled to say it worked well, however I’ve noticed my unpainted latex masks turning brown, is there a way of preventing this or will I need to use your base coat method to paint them in a flesh colour, your advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance, Steve

Hi ! I have a question to which i can't really find an answer. I've painted my first latex mask like 2 weeks ago using half latex, half acrylic paints and regular paintbrushes because i can't afford an airbrush, but now i've noticed the paint cracked everywhere it possibly could. How can I fix that ? Should I just remove the paint and do it all over again ? I'm really sad about it cause i was very proud of how it looked...

Do you or did you ever make ceramics? because the fill the mold, then dump the liquid out after the plaster absorbs some water, and then let it dry, is exactly how they make ceramics out of plaster molds LOL
@graveriffer
@graveriffer Жыл бұрын
Quick question (hopefully the video is not too old), I'm trying to make my own mask, I got the clay sculpture and plan on doing a similar plaster mold. So, instead of having to do a big batch of latex, filling it up and dumping the excess does it work the same to brush layer by layer? or is filling and then dumping what gets best results? My mask has some 3d parts that poke out but not excessively. Thanks!
@DistortionsUnlimited
@DistortionsUnlimited Жыл бұрын
Hi Grave Riffer! Wishing you the best with your mask from all of us at Distortions. You can brush up the latex layer by layer if you want. On some of our large animatronic and prop molds we spray the latex in with a quart sprayer layer by layer. Let us know how your mask goes.

@@DistortionsUnlimited That's a relief! As I'm on a budget I wasn't too keen on wasting latex, thanks for the quick reply and will do!
@DistortionsUnlimited
@DistortionsUnlimited Жыл бұрын
Great! But remember, when we do the fill up with latex, wait and dump method we save all of the remaining liquid latex and then use it to pour more props. So you can do the same. You can fill up your mold with latex, let it sit for the desired about of time depending on the thinkness you want, and then dump it out in a bucket or container to save it and use it again. We have other methods that we use for large molds where we actually mechanically suck the latex out and back into a tank to use again. Hope that makes sense. But both methods should work for you.
