I thought that she broke the mirror of twilight because she didn't want to risk anything, like the events of Twilight princess, happening again. She destroyed the only known way into the twilight realm to prevent the possibility of hyrule being screwed over again. And I thought that Midna was sad about leaving because she liked Link a lot. So saying goodbye was going to be difficult, knowing that they'd never meet again.

Here's my theory: shes the true ruler of the twilight realm. That's why the game literally says only the true ruler can fully destroy the mirror. 200 IQ

Nah. I don't think she's dead. These are just minor inconsistencies in the ending. And the reason she can freely walk around in the final scene while it's daytime is because it's the hour of twilight.

I don't think Midna died. After Zelda's spirit was released, Midna didn't turn into a shadow like she normally does when in the world of light. So maybe Midna absorbed some power from the triforce of wisdom?

Theory: She's the true ruler of the Twili because she's the first 'true' Twili. Twilight is a time of day when there's a mix of both light and dark. And so the Dark Interlopers are well, simply dark. The Light spirits are able to infuse Midna with Light once she's dead and revive her as a true mix of Light and Dark. So with her job class upgraded she's able to create a Tear of Light and shatter the mirror, then heads into the realm to lead her people. Remember, in the Twilight Realm the Twili need the Sols in order to maintain their shape. The means they don't have any Light of their own, but rather have to use the artificial Light of the Sols so that they don't devolve into beastial shadows. But that's just a theory.

I love anything involving Midna, I think she's the best companion in any Zelda game tbh

I'm not sure, but did the games ever state that a being of light can't exist in darkness? They turn into ghosts which can still interact with their surroundings, but do they die?

Holy crap, so...Midna pulled a Navi from the end of Ocarina of Time.

Countertheory: when midna was purified and became a light spirit, she was sent to the twilight realm to save her people, and she destroyed the mirror with the knowledge she could forge a hyrule mirror in the future, when her people were ready. However, she knew that this would be thousands of years down the line and the people she had grown to love would be long dead, leaving only their descendants. When the people of both realms were ready, the Spirit of the Twilight (which would be Midna) could bring the realms back together. If they did this, then they could have the first Zelda game that wasn't actually about Link and Zelda, but rather about Midna as the protagonist. Name of that game could be Legend of Zelda: The Return of the Spirit or something like that. Yes, I am typing this all out because the thought of my favorite videogame character ever committing suicide is just too depressing for me

Admit it, the “butt” transitions are amazing.

Hmm... This actually makes me think.. Up until the point of, well her dying, I do think is correct, she probably did die and the light spirits revived her by embuing their light into her. This is supported by her reappearing right beside the now destroyed helm, almost symbolizing something left behind. Though just because she entered the Twilight as a being of (at least partially light since we see the shadow bugs fusing with the tears) doesn't mean she died. You see the people becomes spirits and their floating moving soul bit but when light is returned so do their bodies, as you can we with the same people doing the same tasks at the same times. Another nit pick, if the light spirits created it, you know, why can't they, I don't know, live in it or be the real rulers or something along those lines? If a prison is made by a king, the king rules it. How would that not aply here? Since the Twili can't do it, they're clearly not meant to rule it, they're just Gerudo prisoners who had their light slowly sapped away (cause a shadow is something devoid of light). And, if the light spirits made the mirror and could break it, why couldn't Midna just make a new mirror if she is now a light spirit or at least has the same abilities as such? I think she would know that, you know since she litterally housed Zeldas soul and thus the triforce of wisdom. Maybe the real reason she left was because housing Zeldas soul was what made her have her change of heart, seeing Link and Hyrule in the same way Zelda did, maybe even passing on a love for Link as is destined but knowing it was impossible. And maybe she did know of some other time she'd see the Hylias knight once again, just not that link since she's already dead and will stay as a spirit for however long. Another support to light being able to stay in the Twilight is the Sol. Condensed spheres of light that prevent the cursing and decaying caused by the realm itself and able to infuse certain objects (such as the master sword). Meaning that light was meant to be in the realm or it slowly decayed. And yes I know that ganons curse caused the land to be that way but you watch the Sol cleanse the people of the Twilight without harming them, even making passage to places unreachable without it, something they point out. But we know that a light spirit can severely harm a being of shadow, as we saw happen to midna being directly exposed to a beam of light from a light spirit. Though we see midna in the same room without being harmed until the beam happens. So yeah, I don't think she died nor do I see it as a possibility, but the rest has very concrete grounds. And more concrete grounds to say she did die but was brought back and answers a whole bunch of questions, and a bunch of the answers actually fitting into the culture where the game originated. And yes, a lot of the things you see in Zelda games are related to Japanese mythology, and not really the budist kind though that's been creaping in since skyward sword, more Shinto (of which is outlawed and many of the shrines almost abandoned). I like the religion okay, way way way way better than the ones around today and... Alright I won't nerd out there, though it's incredibly fascinating and I do recommend looking into it, the creation story too, they gave names and personalities to natural forces like volcanoes and clouds and other thinks like mirrors (if you wondered where the broken mirrors and mirrors containing bits of your soul thing came frome, they're the earliest one. in fact the earliest religion despite its worshipless state, which makes it my favorite, not budism, though they're the first to include worship and the most similar to what's known today). It's really cool. Alright I'm done now

Way to make her departure scene more heartbreaking

Based on the in game dialogue, Midna specifically states that ONLY THE TRUE LEADER OF THE TWILI can destroy the mirror, and since Zant was not the true leader, all he could do was break it into 4 large pieces; however, with Midna being the princess of twilight, heir to the throne, she is the true leader of her people, thus her being able to shatter the mirror.

I don’t think she’s dead. I think the light spirits revived her and made her immune to the effects of being in the world of light. The quote can be explained with the fact that the twilight mirror was broken, meaning there is no way for her to return to Hyrule. In order for her to return they’d have to either come up with a totally new method and retcon part of twilight princess

It's hard to say whether she died or not. It wasn't the Twilight Realm itself transforming Link, rather a curse of shadows from the Twilight. However simply existing in the Twilight Realm might be a different case for a Light Spirit. who knows, maybe upon arriving Midna transformed into some kind of animal like the Light Spirits in Hyrule.

As much as this theory makes a lot of sense, my heart actually hurts thinking about it.

What if she "brought light" to the twilight realm. Since the mirror was created for banishment, maybe the twilight realm wasn't created until the mirror was. So maybe she transformed the twilight realm into something less "twilight".

I feel like her emotions at the end are just as easily explained as her caring about Link and Zelda but knowing she's about to leave and never see them again.

She could also be a unique hybrid that can exist in both the light and twilight worlds. The power of light she now possesses could then be used to substitute the light of the sols that were absorbed into the Master Sword during the game.

I really like the idea about a prophecy that Midna fulfills, however, I don't think she dies in the end. In the context of a prophecy, this could be a way for the twili (aka the descendants of the interlopers) to slowly return to the world of light. A new "sol" (Midna) would enter the twili, bringing hope and a future to the twili people. In the twilight world, the sols were the power sources for the world and they could revert the people from Ganon/Zant's corrupted forms. Since Midna is the destined ruler of the twili, she would also be the twili people's future. By bringing back what she learned in the light and what the spirits offered her, this could be the spirits' way of giving the twili a second chance. In the game, the twili did not even bother Link once the sols were close enough to them, even when he didn't have them yet. They kind of stood there, seemingly empty. The twili are not the same people as the original interlopers, they just have to deal with living in their ancestors' shadow (pun intended). Perhaps by destroying the mirror, Midna is trying to destroy the past and pave a new path for the future, one where she would one day bring her people back into the world of light, or at least have a more unified connection rather than connected to a past of shame. In the future, maybe Link will learn of the new method to enter the Twilight Realm and it will look drastically different, all because of the spirits and most of all, Midna. Midna at the end scene may be distracted because she is thinking about all she may have to do when she returns home, but knowing that the people of the light, in this case Zelda and Link, are with her and not against her, she knows that she will never be alone and one day she will see them again.

I don’t read any Zelda theory websites, but has anyone brought up that the design of Midna’s sleeves have similarities to the arm in the BOTW2 teaser? Not totally the same, but imagine cutting along the lines on her sleeves and folding them into the air from their base. Looks similar to those golden arm decorations.

One detail that I would like to add in order to support the theory of the Light Spirits resurrecting her is the fact that even though we saw Ganondorf crush the Midna’s Fused Shadow headpiece in his hands, we see it back on her head in the distance as the Light Spirits crowd around her.

I think this reaches a bit too far for what seems an artistic choice for a final farewell for the character however this theory is still well articulated enough that I can see it being plausible if they decided to go that way so I can respect it, great job on the theory man.

Considering all of these resemblances.. how Midna could have been resurrected by the light spirits, shedding a tear of light, how that could even be possible, and why she destroyed the mirror... all the loose threads ive always wondered about tie in together perfectly. I feel bad about the Water symbol is missing the top right section of the medallion, so Ganandorf killed the Water Sage after Link did completed the Arbiter's Ground and obtaining the first of 4 shards of the broken mirror. Coming up: Snowy Mountain Heights, Sacred Forest Grove, and the Sky to search for three remaining shards to fix the mirror to the original state.

The fascinating thing about your theory is that Midna would be alive in the Twilight. As the Light Spirits dwelled in twilight when they were torn apart but were unable to shed their light on the world, being invisible. So her return to the twilight realm could’ve A. Meant her disappearance and she wouldn’t be able to materialize and show her body, or B. she brought light to the twilight. Purifying her people. What if it was the mirror that prevented the twili from existing in the world of light? All possibilities. The world would still be devoid of a lot of life anyways as the tribe was so small, but it would possibly lead them to eventually be connected to the world of light in true form. And they become the Zonai. She did say see you later. What if the mirror was just a way of severing an actual part of the world off from itself creating its own dimension of sorts? We’ve seen the horrific effects the mirror has on anything within its proximity.

Something to consider is maybe the light spirits had made light hurt them as a way to minimize attempts to gain the triforce, since you know it'd make it very difficult for the twilight to fight the light spirits now. Among fighting armies during the day.

Interesting theory! I do wonder now if the other Twili people returned to normal when Zant died, because it's possible that if Midna DID become a light spirit, that was necessary to fix/save her people. Alternate theory: If the Light Spirits come from Hylia instead of the Golden Trio, it's possible they saved Midna specifically because of how distraught Link and Zelda were about her death, but that still wouldn't explain the whole "wasn't dying from the sun anymore" thing BABY COME BACK

I like to think that the reason all of that happened, her fading away like she did, being able to walk freely in the daylight, and being able to be in the presence of the light spirits without almost dying is because they blessed her with allowing her to do that

Or she just transformed the twilight realm into a world of light

Something to add; when Link uses the Mirror of Twilight, he doesn’t transform into a wolf immediately. His protection by the Triforce truns him into a wolf when he is forcefully pulled past the curtain of Twilight, essentially trying to break through a barrier. However, due to a lack of immediate transformation, I think it’s safe to say that the Mirror of Light is a safe passageway for beings of light to enter the Twilight Realm? This would simply have Midna’s sad tone boiled down to her decision to never again see the friends that saved her life, and would mean Midna safely returns to her home as a being of light, while still holding some amount of her darker Twili nature. Then again, I’m just a huge Midna fan who doesn’t want her dead, so perhaps I missed something?
