In this tutorial, we play with masks and transitions, and walk through the entire process of creating a custom mask in OpenShot Video Editor.
The following topics are covered in this video:
- Creating a custom mask image using Gimp
- Adding mask image to .openshot_qt/transitions/ folder
- Using a transition and mask
- Controlling transitions and masks using keyframes
- Some additional examples using our mask (at the end)
Download OpenShot for free on Linux, Mac, or Windows: www.openshot.org/download/.

In all the videos shown I didn’t see a basic tutorial to work with a video made previously, like that of a simulator game I am interested in. The basics shown are great, but point me in the right direction to manipulate an actual video, how to deleted unwanted footage, errors in recording, etc. thank you. By the way great video voice, calming, the right speed, and easy to understand diction. Thanks

Thank you Jonathan, you are definitely The Authority on OpenShot!!! :-) I have a kind question, is it possible to cross-mix back and forth between two simultaneous (synchronized) feeds? Think of it as an A/B roll where camera A is on the audience and camera B is on the actors. Both cameras (both timelines) are in sync. I do not want to chop up the two synced tracks into lots of small pieces. I want to temporarily cross fade (or wipe out) the upper track so that the lower track will appear, and then bring the upper track back in again, and do this several times. Is this possible in OpenShot? Thanks!!!!!

We need a video on editing the audio track and removing background noises
@specialservicesequipment393
@specialservicesequipment393 4 жыл бұрын
You can split the audio out of the track into a seperate trakc, then render only that track into a .mp4 file. Load that rendered audio into AUDACITY, and work your noise filtering from there, export it from Audacity as a high quality .wav and then add it back into openshot and export the video and the new audio track back out into an .mp4 or whatever you prefer.

Jonathan thomas.Great thank tutoral, thank you! Subscribed. Is this editor so capable that you can completeley cut out a selected moving object from a video footage and place onto another moving video footage. For example the first video (A) is of a car moving in a busy street. I select just the moving car as my subject, and cut it out of the video (A) then place it onto a second video (B) which is footage of speeding cars on a racing track. So that my cut out moving car from video (A) is now driving in a new and different environment on a racing track with other cars in video (B) The end result is that now there is only one video screen still in motion throughout its duration but hosting the moving cut out car from video (A). hope tht makes sense. Sorry im a bit long winded. .

Also, is there any way to import my Windows font file into Open Shot? And how about text animation? Any way to do that?

I have always done masking this way, and wondered what the use of the 'alpha mask' effect was... Could we have the alpha mask effect adjust the keyframe all on it's own please? That way, one could just drag-and-drop the effect and it would just work? Or maybe you could add some more neat features to the alpha mask effect like 'feather' and stuff. Perhaps even have the an 'invert' property on that effect. Maybe we could also have OpenShot automatically keep certain oarts transparent if we want to keyframe the mask so that we can have easy walk-by-transition effect that Edgar Wright uses so well. Thank you again for the great software, Mr. Thomas! :)
@prafullagiri8420
@prafullagiri8420 6 жыл бұрын
A major benifit of having an 'alpha mask' effect actually work and turn any greyscale image into a mask would be that the 'alpha mask-ish' parameters can be adjusted from the effect properties while the images clip properties can still be tweaked to make the mask move or resize and stuff: opening up a lot of new creative possibilities - Walk-by-transition, to name a very basic one.

Every time I use 2 or three video tracks and transitions between them or simply overlapping the clips, I hear some sound every time it transit the place where video tracks merged or transition is used, like audio breaks or something. Openshot isn't the only video editor where I have this issue. The same thing is with Filmora, Windows movie maker and some online video editors. How can I get rid of this? Thank you :)

Open shot is broken now on my Linux Mint 19.3 installation. I've been using it for several years, and love it. It's simple, intuitive, and clean. BUT, after the latest update released, it freezes at every video transition, like going between the introduction Title and the main video as I have always faded between. It just stops playing for minutes at a time, then when it does continue, my brain is elsewhere and I can't tell if the transition worked. I can't even get to masking, green screen, etc. It's so bad I downloaded KDEnlive and used it for my last video. Painful!

How do I make a rectangular mask? For example, let's say I have an image on the timeline. I want the full image to be shown for the first few seconds, and then I want to hide the rest of the image so that only a selected rectangular portion of the image is still visible, to emphasize focus on that portion. I then want to be able to move that selected portion around the frame. To get a better idea of what I mean, please watch my latest uploaded video on my channel. As you can see, I first show the image of the character's profile. Then, I isolate the portion of the image that shows their Action Flow, then have it shift to the bottom right of the frame. I made that video in Hitfilm Express, but I want to learn how to do it in Openshot as well.
