When I came home from the Navy in 12/70 this song was real popular, and was the favorite song of a young lady who became a very dear friend. In 1973 she was diagnosed with a rare neurological disease that crippled her in just a few years and took her life in 1980. This brought back a lot of both good and bad memories. Rest in God's bosum, my dear friend Cathy E.

God Bless you fellow sailor ! When i was in boot camp in early 70's (San Diego) after Mass @ the Catholic Chapel on base, the priest invited a recruit to play for us ......"Classical Gas" and he nailed it !!! This was just a few years after the release of this hit song, no internet etc......amazing . I can only suspect his intent was to go Navy Musician school complete his tour and get G.I. Bill for Julliard.

Mason Williams was my neighbor many years ago in a small town east of San Diego called Ramona. I’d get a chance to listen to him play every now and then. This young lady has nothing to be ashamed of. She owned it.

19 years ago I went to Europe to play a 5 country, 13 concert solo guitar tour, and practiced for 4 to 8 hours per day for 6 months, playing all the sets in order to "muscle memory" them and try to perfect them. It only took the first month to go from 80% to 90% proficiency but it took the other 5 months to get from 90% to 97% proficiency. Any musician who is in that level of playing will tell you those last 3% are like approaching the speed of light. It's impossible to get past 98%. My comment from 2 years ago puts her video at 10 or 11 years ago. The difference between them and now is absolutely amazing. I'll just sit on the sidelines now, and listen to masters like Gabriella and Mike Dawes... My mom died 3 weeks after I completed my China / Malaysia/Singapore/Japan tour a few years after Europe. It took all the wind out of my sails and I don't play anymore. I utterly quit playing after some live stuff in 2010. No desire to play, though I've got guitars and a violin right beside me. In the late 90's I was telling some students of mine that "The DESIRE TO PLAY is that GIFT OF MUSIC saying, HERE I AM, WORK ME. Music is a form of spiritual communication" One of them said, "I just read that somewhere." I said "I wouldn't doubt it I've been saying it for 20+ years since the mid-70's." Nathan said, "No, I read it in a magazine." Next day he brought a "Guitar" magazine from an interview with Michael Hedges just before he died, where he said that last part... that music was a form of spiritual communication. Why do we enjoy music so much? I mean GOOD music that actually transcends this dimension into a different dimension, closer to God's dimension where He dwells alone. I'm not talking about K-Pop or backstreet blokes, or pop music. (Pop is short for popcorn pumper music. Manufactured) We know the answer to that question. Music is the language of the soul to another soul. If it is inspired, it has 10,000 times more impact than uninspired music.

Like Ray Charles and a few others Gabriella has that rare ability to make any song she covers her own. Charles uses a different tempo on almost everything he covers but I've never heard ANY criticism of his versions. So why the criticism of this extraordinary young woman's talent. The use of a unique tempo is how they can make it sound so special.
@wdowsley6 жыл бұрын
I play it solo to myself in the late 60's, and played at that tempo as well.
@sbalak5 жыл бұрын
Because if you sacrifice the essence of the song with stunted overlapping notes that are often accidentally muted and cut short by playing too fast you no longer have a coherent composition. i'm sure Ray Charles did a fine job provided he did not make those sacrifices. Tempo is established based upon the composition and can vary from artist to artist .
@oscarballadares65784 жыл бұрын
@@sbalak "stunted overlapping notes that are often accidentally muted...", That's a possibility, but not a rule of thumb. When I was 13 years old and learning to play the guitar, my brother who was 12 at the time and never even picked up a guitar, grabbed mine one day and played that song note for note! I sat there with my jaw dropped in amazment! When he was finished and had put my guitar back down, I got up and gave him a hug and asked him to teach me that song. He said he couldn't teach me but he can remember it in his head. Of course, he turned out to be a genius and was going to Tampa Tech University at the age of 15. Barbara Dixon Lol defensive much? Fact is fact. If the tempo is off, then the tempo is off. Nothing to get defensive about. You don't have to be a rocket scientist, or in this case, a classical guitarist, to point this out. I seriously have no idea how, in your world, someone has to be better than you to criticize your work. What you said is as silly as saying, "Don't you dare point out someone's spelling errors unless you're a better writer than them!!"
@timennis34569 жыл бұрын
Underr Siegee Did you happen to see that line of text up above, the one just below "Published on Mar, 2012?" Yes, the next line down that says "arranged by Ulli ...." That word "arranged" brings with it all the artistic license you can use to do anything you want. Play it faster. Play it slower. Play it upside-down and backward. It is YOUR ARRANGEMENT and IS NOT meant to be an exact, note-by-note meter-perfect reproduction of the original.Your "Fact is fact" point is baseless and myopic.

I might get a lot of insults from this, but I like your version way more than Tommy Emmanuel's. I mean, he's just showing how good he is by making a lot of impossible things, but I don't find them good to listen to. He might enjoy playing it, but I don't enjoy hearing it. Yours shows way more warmth, you can really perceive you're feeling the song, and passion is everything in music. It isn't just a "hey everyone, look at me, I'm better than anyone else!".
@rs73494 жыл бұрын
You are quite right , Tommy Emmanuel seems to need always unnecessary frills. I wonder if he could play the songs the way they are meant to, I suspect not. Artists who need these frills are allways hiding something.I don't like listening to him either. Gabriella rules!

@ellesnyder9424 жыл бұрын
@@rs7349 I enjoy them both. I balk at the line "..play the songs the way they were meant to.." as if the original version is the only way somethings ever meant to be played. Most artists get tired of the same old way and tweak their own songs all the time
@Ric-Phillips4 жыл бұрын
ITAMrPink I agree. There is technical skill - which Tommy Emmanuel has by the truckload - and there is musicality. Most of the time when I listen to Tommy Emanuel it just sounds too fast. Sure every note is correct, and the virtuosity is dazzling, but he plays so fast it crushes the natural, beautiful sustain of acoustic guitar into a flurry or percussive ‘drum rolls’. Which even then is fine for a traditionally percussive, fast genre like flamenco. But it really sucks the soul out of blues or melodic finger style pieces in his repertoire. Nice to know I’m not the only one who feels this way.
@silverhopeful4 жыл бұрын

That guitar work is not easy. I really appreciate her type of playing. It sounds so full and robust. It looks like we have another talented guitar player to deal with. There can't be too many!

Love the way she gives us a head look in middle of a run, that’s concentration... and a victory smile at end of each piece... Incredible talent being shared with us ...
