Mass Appeal

“I gotta get Funkadelic on em,” says Dame Grease, producer of crucial tacks for Mase, The Lox, and the whole Ruff Ryders camp. When Dame accepted Mass Appeal’s Rhythm Roulette challenge, we knew we were in for a treat. Although he and his protege Swizz Beatz are known for a mostly sample-free sound, the Harlem-born and Bronx-raised producer can chop with the best of them. “Every producer knows you can look at the grooves and see where they thin out at,” Grease said while surveying three randomly selected vinyl albums. “That’s where the breakdown’s at.” Working his way through ‘Spinners Live,’ Jose Feliciano’s ’10 to 23,’ and ‘Romantic Swing’ by Eugen Cicero, Grease zeroed in on Feliciano’s 1969 version of ‘By the Time I Get to Phoenix’ because he used to live in Phoenix. “Let’s go straight to that,” Grease said, dropping the needle. “Groovy! That’s the one.” Check out the latest episode of Rhythm Roulette to find out how Dame Grease flipped that joint like it was meant to be.

Many years agp we opened for the Spinners. We got there early and set up our stuff. We got a great sound. When Slinners showed up, they wanted us to carry their gear and set it up, tune the strings. We were all seasoned road warriores in our 40s and 50s. We shook hands and went to get a bite to eat. 😁😁

I was itching to hit the thumbs down button when I saw he was simply looping and adding a basic trap hats. But I waited in case he flipped another album. But then he added the keys, and I was like "okay... wasn't expecting this... hmm". Then he added the strings "Ohh... staccato strings were completely left field and ill". He took what could've been a simple basic loop and turned it into a good track. Not a dope beat, but a good track, and there's a difference. It was musical and everything he added sounded organic to the sample. Very nice job, shit was musical, a great example of what can be achieved with a loop.

@andgar923
@andgar923 6 жыл бұрын
Eh... not necessarily but it depends on 'how' it's done. Of course there's different factors that come into play here, but it tends to take less creativity/imagination/skill when it's a straight up loop and drums. On a show such as this we are expecting more from these participants. It aint just some random dude in his room on a laptop making beats. These are supposed to be producers with credits to their name. So the bar is higher. It's discouraging and a let down if a published producer simply loops and adds a generic drums. This dude made a good track, and showed what a loop SHOULD be like if one was to just loop. On the flip side, I dislike when people chop and flip a sample beyond recognition which loses all melody/rhythm and simply sounds like a cocktail of different chopped sounds for the simple fact that they can jack off and say "I can chop and flip!!!".

Someone should do a video explaining the nuances of what makes a producer good. There's different types of producers with different styles and not all of them are good. Someone can have the craziest technical skills but no sense of musicality. On the flip side someone could be a technical idiot, but have a great ear and sense of rhythm and melody. I see comments on these vids in which producers that sample criticize producers that play instruments and vice versa. They're arguing 2 different styles for the most part, yet nobody has ever broken down, classified, and analyzed the different production styles/methods and what makes them good/bad. I.e. Or a series that breaks down what makes certain producers elite. For instance, Preemo's ear for finding a sample in songs that most wouldn't. He has an ear that's unique and finds sounds that most wouldn't even think of and turns them into classics. An episode can focus on Timbaland's sense of rhythm and melody. His usage of synths and sounds to create sexy, danceable, futuristic hits. An episode that focuses on what distinguishes a good trap beat vs a generic one. We've all heard them, some of us criticize and dismiss them while some of us have eargasms when we hear the hi hats.
